CryptoWatch: Musk and Crypto, the Radiant Capital Hack, and Meme-Coin Psychology

A historical Musk-related market report, Radiant Capital’s account of a $50 million attack, and the social and speculative appeal of meme coins—with the limits of what the evidence shows.

Three forces shape these crypto stories: attention can amplify market moves, trust can be exploited to authorize transactions, and community can give speculative tokens cultural appeal. But a public figure’s remarks are not a reliable trading signal, a hardware wallet cannot by itself guarantee that a transaction is safe, and the available evidence does not quantify why individual people buy meme coins.

Did Elon Musk endorse crypto again?

An October 28, 2024, Tech Times roundup linked a recent Musk speech and his political campaign with a broader crypto rally. It reported that Bitcoin rose 5.42% to $68,000 and Dogecoin rose 26.25% over the period it covered. Those are historical figures reported by that outlet, not current prices.

The roundup does not independently verify the original remarks or establish that they caused the reported price changes. It also does not isolate other market forces. The careful conclusion is that Musk-related news and reported market moves coincided—not that his comments reliably move prices or predict future returns.

What social-media research can—and cannot—show

A 2024 ACM Web Science Conference study, “Deciphering Crypto Twitter,” analyzed 40 million cryptocurrency-related tweets. Its authors identified six discussion clusters, examined how sentiment shifted around real-world events, and studied reply and quote networks, including their potential use in detecting bot activity.

That work helps explain how online attention and event discussion can be studied. It does not establish that Musk caused the 2024 moves or that social-media sentiment provides a dependable investment strategy. Attention is evidence of conversation, not a forecast.

What happened in the Radiant Capital hack?

Radiant Capital said its October 16, 2024, incident caused a loss valued at approximately $50 million. In an update published December 6, the project described a chain of social engineering and malware that reached developer devices and led to malicious transactions being signed.

  1. A familiar contact created an opening. Radiant said that on September 11 a developer received a Telegram message apparently from a trusted former contractor. The sender claimed to be pursuing smart-contract auditing work and asked for feedback on a zipped PDF.
  2. The archive delivered malware. According to Radiant, the ZIP file contained INLETDRIFT malware, established a persistent backdoor on macOS, and displayed a legitimate-looking PDF.
  3. Malicious transactions were authorized. Radiant said the signing interfaces showed benign transaction details while malicious transactions were signed in the background. The project’s update put it this way: “The front-end interfaces displayed benign transaction data while malicious transactions were signed in the background.”

Why a hardware wallet did not settle the problem

Radiant said its standard practices included transaction simulation, payload checks, and hardware wallets. The incident shows why key custody and transaction integrity are different security questions: a device may help protect private keys, but it cannot ensure that the information a signer sees is trustworthy or that the transaction being authorized matches the intended action. Radiant’s account does not support a claim that a hardware wallet would have prevented this attack.

For people approving crypto transactions, the practical lesson is to verify the transaction itself—not merely the device used to sign it. For organizations, it is also important to treat an unexpected file or work request from a supposedly familiar contact as a potential security event, even when it arrives through an established messaging channel.

How the FBI describes the wider social-engineering risk

A September 3, 2024, FBI alert described DPRK-linked actors targeting people in decentralized finance and crypto businesses through individualized fake scenarios, impersonation, and extended conversations designed to build trust. The alert said even technically sophisticated employees could be vulnerable. It is broader threat guidance, not evidence that every crypto attack is linked to those actors.

The FBI’s practical warnings include unexpected code or application downloads and suspicious recruitment scenarios. If a worker suspects an incident, the priority is to follow the organization’s response process and promptly involve its security team rather than continuing to interact with the suspected contact or file.

What is a meme coin, and why do people buy one?

The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s staff statement, last reviewed May 5, 2025, describes meme coins as crypto assets inspired by internet memes, characters, current events, or trends and promoted to attract an enthusiastic online community. It says typical examples have limited or no functionality, are often bought for entertainment, social interaction, or cultural purposes, and derive value primarily from market demand and speculation. The statement compares them to collectibles.

This is a staff statement, not a binding Commission rule or a determination about every token described as a meme coin. The staff says its analysis does not cover every such product and that a specific offering requires consideration of its particular facts and how it is offered.

Community, culture, and speculation

The description points to several plausible sources of appeal. A token can serve as a marker of belonging to an online community, a way to participate in a joke or trend, or a speculative asset whose perceived value depends heavily on what other buyers may want. These motives are consistent with the SEC staff’s account; they should not be treated as universal explanations of any individual buyer’s decision.

The available evidence does not quantify how much fear of missing out, social identity, or any other particular motive drives meme-coin purchases, nor does it establish what share of buyers lose money. The crypto-Twitter study examines discussion across crypto topics, not the psychology of meme-coin buyers specifically.

What connects celebrity crypto news, hacks, and meme coins?

All three involve trust and attention, but in different ways. A prominent remark can draw attention without proving why a market moved. A convincing message can exploit trust to get someone to approve a harmful transaction. A meme coin can gain cultural and speculative appeal through an online community even when its practical functionality is limited.

For a personal-finance decision, keep those distinctions clear: online enthusiasm is not evidence of future returns, a familiar contact is not proof that a download is safe, and a token’s cultural popularity does not establish what it is worth or how it is treated under law.
