What the boycott campaign was about
A January 2024 news report summarized conservative calls to avoid airlines over DEI, including a call to boycott United Airlines and rhetoric favoring a “new non-woke airline.” The article page was not accessible; its search-result summary is the basis for this limited account. Federal agency direction
On January 29, 2025, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that Secretary Sean Duffy had signed a memorandum directing agency officials to identify and eliminate specified policies and programs from the Biden administration, including DEI initiatives. American Airlines and Southwest Airlines
America First Legal (AFL), a conservative legal advocacy organization, said the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) held a compliance conference with Southwest Airlines on December 3, 2024. AFL framed the American agreement as a victory for merit-based selection. Its counsel Will Scolinos said, “American companies must return to using merit—not the desire to check a DEI box—to select the most skilled and qualified employees.” That is Scolinos’s advocacy position, not a neutral finding about the airline’s past hiring or flight safety. What the evidence does—and does not—say about safety
Employment-policy disputes and operational safety are different questions. The cited material describes political allegations about DEI and reports agreements concerning specified hiring and promotion practices. It does not provide evidence linking those practices to pilot qualifications, crew performance, accidents, or passenger risk. It therefore cannot support a conclusion that DEI made flying less safe—or a broader conclusion about the safety effects of any airline’s employment policies.

Did the boycotts affect airline business?
The available sources provide no reliable count of boycott participants and no measure of changes in bookings, revenue, or market share attributable to the calls. There is not enough evidence here to say the campaign succeeded, failed, or materially changed any airline’s business.
AFL’s American Airlines announcement said American, United, and Southwest together held approximately 50% of airline market share. How to assess an airline’s DEI position as a traveler
The sources do not provide a comparable, current account of DEI policies across airlines, so they do not support recommending one carrier over another on that basis. If you are deciding where to book, distinguish among a dated company commitment, a current company statement, and an advocacy group’s account of a legal or compliance development. None alone establishes an airline’s operational safety record.
