The launch added options to an existing soybean-derivatives lineup; it did not, by itself, open the products to overseas traders.
When did Dalian’s soybean options start trading?
All three options markets made their debut on August 8, 2022. A State Council report published July 30, 2022 said the China Securities Regulatory Commission had approved the launch and that trading would begin August 8. An exchange-sourced notice reported the same date.
The launch was presented as a way to support enterprise risk management. Its significance was the addition of options to DCE’s existing soybean-chain risk-management products—not evidence that the contracts had already achieved any particular level of use.
What contracts launched, and what were their initial terms?
The three options were tied to distinct DCE underlying contracts. Reuters described No. 1 soybeans as non-GMO and No. 2 soybeans as GMO. Soybean-oil options provided exposure to a processed product in the soybean chain.

The launch notice described the contracts as American-style options. The contract month, codes, exercise style and position limits above are launch-era details reported in a July 31, 2022 CCB Futures notice reporting DCE information; they are not confirmation of current contract rules or limits. The notice says its English translation is for reference and that the Chinese text prevails.
What did trading look like on launch day?
Reuters reported the following volume and open interest at the August 8, 2022 close:

These are one-day debut figures, not a measure of present-day liquidity or ongoing activity. They show that the three contracts had different levels of trading on their first day; they do not establish how the markets developed afterward. Reuters published the figures in its August 8, 2022 report carried by Successful Farming.
Why add soybean-oil options?
An option gives its holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell a futures position at a specified price. That flexibility can help traders manage price exposure. DCE already had soybean-meal options, which Reuters reported began trading in 2017.

On launch day, Darin Friedrichs, co-founder of Sitonia Consulting, said soybean-oil options could complement soybean-meal options for traders hedging crush margins—the economics of processing soybeans into meal and oil—or expressing a view on the products’ relative values. He also said the No. 1 and No. 2 soybean options might draw less attention because those underlying markets were smaller and less liquid. Those were analyst views reported at the time, not evidence of later performance.

The August 8 launch did not itself grant overseas traders access. In December 2022, the State Council reported that DCE would open specified products—including No. 1 soybean, No. 2 soybean, soybean meal and soybean oil—to overseas traders on December 26, 2022. The State Council’s December 10, 2022 report describes that later access change.

- It establishes the launch date: the three DCE options began trading on August 8, 2022, following regulatory approval.
