The July 2024 announcement set a production target for the end of 2026, but ministry officials said in June 2026 that progress had lagged and BYD’s access to incentives had been suspended earlier that year. A report relaying a Reuters interview said construction had not started and BYD had no production timeline. The project had not been reported as cancelled, but its status after June 2026 is unresolved.
What BYD announced for Türkiye
On 9 July 2024, Türkiye’s Ministry of Industry and Technology signed an investment agreement with BYD valued at USD 1 billion, according to Invest in Türkiye’s announcement. The plan was for a facility producing electric and plug-in hybrid cars, with annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles, plus a sustainable mobility and research and development center. The announcement projected up to 5,000 direct jobs and production by the end of 2026. These were planned figures and targets, not evidence of completed construction, actual employment or vehicle output.
The planned location is Manisa in western Türkiye. Anadolu Agency reported that land allocation procedures in Manisa took place after BYD made the required payment; the Manisa governorate identified the planned site as Manisa OSB. That establishes progress on site allocation, not that factory construction began.
What has changed since the announcement
In a report published on 10 June 2026, Anadolu Agency relayed ministry information that planned progress had not been achieved for some time and BYD’s access to incentives was suspended at the beginning of 2026. Ministry officials said the investment agreement, its conditions, BYD’s obligations and guarantees submitted to the state remained valid. They also said incentives could have to be repaid if the investment is not completed, subject to the applicable rules, commitments and guarantees. Hürriyet Daily News, relaying Reuters reporting dated 11 June 2026, said BYD executive vice president Stella Li stated that construction had not started and the company had no timeline for starting production in Türkiye. The end-of-2026 production start was the target announced in July 2024, not a currently confirmed schedule. By June 2026, ministry-reported delays and the reported absence of a construction start and production timeline made that original target uncertain. No authoritative update later than June 2026 is established here, so the project’s precise status as of 8 October 2026 cannot be confirmed.

The available updates point to a delayed project, not a formally cancelled one: ministry officials said the agreement and obligations remained valid. Whether the project proceeds, when construction might begin, and whether any incentives are ultimately repaid have not been established.
