Bluehost’s support article, updated August 13, 2026, identifies PayPal Payments by Bluehost and Stripe Payments by Bluehost as its supported gateways for automatic subscription renewals. PayPal requires a PayPal Business account; Stripe requires a Stripe account. The most consequential limitation: with the Bluehost Subscriptions implementation described by Bluehost, a customer cannot switch the payment method on an existing subscription. They must cancel it and start a new one.

These are payments your WooCommerce store collects from its customers—not automatic billing for your own Bluehost hosting account. Processor approval, fees, supported countries and currencies, fraud screening, payouts, and the availability of particular payment methods remain subject to PayPal or Stripe.

Which gateways support automatic renewals?

Bluehost documents two gateways for automatic recurring subscription payments. Both are described as included with its eCommerce plan; that does not include processor approval or make PayPal and Stripe processing free. See Bluehost’s subscription payment-gateway guide.

Gateway Automatic renewals Payment options described by Bluehost Account and setup Key qualification
PayPal Payments by Bluehost Yes, according to Bluehost PayPal and credit cards, plus options including Google Pay and Apple Pay PayPal Business account; Bluehost → Commerce → PayPal Payments Availability of wallets, card fields, and other PayPal checkout methods—and their eligibility for renewals—can vary by account, country, currency, product, device, and processor rules.
Stripe Payments by Bluehost Yes, according to Bluehost Card payments through Stripe Stripe account; Bluehost → Commerce → Stripe Payments Do not assume that every Stripe payment method is supported for subscription renewals. The initial checkout capture setting does not govern renewals in the same way.

Automatic renewal means the gateway charges an eligible stored or tokenized payment method when the subscription is due. A manual renewal requires the customer to pay a renewal order or invoice. WooCommerce’s gateway documentation explains that support for automatic renewals varies by gateway extension; a payment option appearing at checkout alone is not proof that it can renew automatically.

WooCommerce also keeps the renewal method associated with a subscription unless the customer changes it through the controls available for that implementation. Adding a compatible gateway later does not necessarily convert existing manual subscriptions into automatic ones.

How to connect PayPal Payments by Bluehost

  1. In WordPress administration, go to Bluehost → Commerce → PayPal Payments, then select Manage.
  2. Open Settings and enable the plugin. Choose Sandbox to test or Live for production.
  3. Select Connect with PayPal. Sign in to a PayPal Business account or create one, then complete the connection. Bluehost says the onboarding status should show Active.
  4. Choose the payment action. Sale transfers funds immediately; Authorize and Capture authorizes first so you can capture later.
  5. If multiple stores use the same PayPal account, set an invoice prefix to help distinguish their transactions.
  6. Save the settings and test checkout and a subscription renewal in Sandbox before switching to Live.

Bluehost also documents a WordPress-admin route under YITH → PayPal Payments for WooCommerce; the menu label may differ with the interface or plugin configuration. Its PayPal plugin setup guide specifies a PayPal Business account.

PayPal checkout options

Bluehost describes settings for additional PayPal Checkout methods, a custom card option, 3-D Secure, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Fast Checkout, and button placement, shape, color, and language. Apple Pay may require registering the site’s domain with PayPal. Bluehost says Google Pay can appear when enabled if the customer has an eligible payment method saved in Google Wallet.

Treat these as checkout options, not a guarantee that every method is available to every buyer or can be used for recurring renewals. Confirm eligibility with PayPal and test the actual renewal flow for your store.

How to connect Stripe Payments by Bluehost

  1. In WordPress administration, go to Bluehost → Commerce → Stripe Payments and select Manage.
  2. Confirm the plugin is enabled. Choose Sandbox for testing or Live for production.
  3. Select Connect Stripe, then sign in to an existing Stripe account or create one.
  4. Complete two-step authentication and provide the personal and business information Stripe requests.
  5. Choose the initial checkout capture method: Capture immediately charges at checkout; Authorize only authorizes first so you can capture later through Stripe.
  6. Confirm Stripe appears as a payment option at checkout, then test the initial payment and renewal in Sandbox.

Bluehost says automatic subscription renewals are charged automatically and do not follow the initial checkout’s Authorize only setting in the same way. Do not use that setting as an indication that renewal payments will wait for a later manual capture. See Bluehost’s current gateway guide.

Verify automatic-renewal eligibility in WooCommerce

  1. Go to WooCommerce → Settings → Payments.
  2. Enable the gateway or gateways you intend to offer.
  3. With WooCommerce Subscriptions active, check the Automatic Recurring Payments column. A check indicates automatic-renewal support; a question-mark indicator can show supported subscription features.
  4. Confirm the store is connected to the intended Sandbox or Live account and test a subscription renewal—not only a one-time checkout.

WooCommerce’s gateway-enablement instructions describe this indicator. If no compatible automatic gateway is enabled and manual renewals are not accepted, checkout can show a “no available payment methods” warning.

You can enable multiple gateways. PayPal and Stripe together can give customers different ways to pay, but require you to manage two processor accounts and reconcile their activity. One gateway simplifies administration but gives customers fewer options. Allowing manual renewals can broaden the available choices, at the cost of asking customers to take action when each renewal is due.

Choose PayPal, Stripe, or both

  • PayPal may suit you if your customers expect PayPal or wallet checkout and you want PayPal-branded options alongside cards. You will need to manage PayPal account approval, payment holds, disputes, and eligibility rules.
  • Stripe may suit you if card-first checkout and Stripe’s payment dashboard fit your operation. You will need to complete Stripe verification and manage its payouts, disputes, reporting, and account restrictions.
  • Both may suit you if customers have mixed preferences and you can reconcile activity across two processors. Offering both does not guarantee that either processor will approve every charge.
  • Manual renewals may be a fallback when a desired gateway does not support automatic renewals or you need a temporary recovery path. They add customer effort, delays, administrative work, and a risk of missed payments.

Choose based on your customers’ payment preferences and your ability to operate the accounts—not on an assumption that one gateway is universally cheaper or more reliable. Processor fees and terms vary; Bluehost’s statement that it adds no per-transaction fee on its eCommerce offer does not remove gateway charges. See Bluehost’s eCommerce hosting page for its plan-level claim, and check current processor terms for your location and account.

Can a customer change the payment method?

For the Bluehost Subscriptions implementation described in Bluehost’s guide, no—not directly on an existing subscription. The customer must cancel it and create a new subscription using the replacement payment method. This limitation is specific to the Bluehost implementation described there; do not assume it applies to every WooCommerce subscription setup.

Before asking a customer to cancel, explain whether the replacement will be prorated and whether cancellation could interrupt access, shipping, membership status, or other benefits. Agree on timing and provide a support contact so the customer does not lose service unexpectedly. Test this process before launch, particularly if customers may need to move between PayPal and Stripe or replace an expired card.

Troubleshoot failed or unsupported renewals

The payment method appears at checkout but cannot renew

Check the WooCommerce Automatic Recurring Payments indicator and the gateway’s subscription compatibility. A method can be available for the first purchase without supporting automatic renewals. Confirm that exact payment method’s recurring eligibility with the processor, then test a renewal in Sandbox.

An existing subscription still asks for manual payment

The renewal method selected when the subscription was created can remain attached to it. Enabling a new automatic gateway later may not convert that subscription. Check its renewal setup and use the customer’s available renewal controls; for the Bluehost implementation, changing the method requires cancellation and a new subscription.

A card worked at checkout but a later charge failed

Bluehost lists insufficient funds, expired or invalid cards, lost or stolen cards, fraud flags, and issuer requests for security-code submission among possible causes. A card may pass the first transaction but fail a later recurring charge if the issuer requires a security code. Bluehost says it cannot store that code; its suggested alternatives are another card or manual monthly payment. See Bluehost’s recurring-charge guidance.

No compatible payment methods are available

  • Confirm WooCommerce Subscriptions and the gateway plugin are active.
  • Check that the gateway is enabled in WooCommerce → Settings → Payments and supports automatic renewals.
  • Confirm the merchant account is connected and verified, and that Sandbox or Live mode is intentional.
  • Check whether manual renewals are enabled and whether the product’s billing schedule is compatible with the gateway.
  • Review processor restrictions for merchant location, customer location, currency, and payment method.

A Sandbox test succeeds but Live does not

Sandbox success does not establish that a Live account is verified, eligible, funded, or configured for the same payment methods. Confirm the Live connection and account status, and test the production flow with an appropriate real transaction before relying on it.

Test the complete subscription journey before launch

  • Complete a new subscription checkout with each gateway you plan to offer.
  • Test a scheduled renewal and confirm the payment, order, and subscription statuses update as expected.
  • If offering wallets, test each eligible wallet on the devices and browsers your customers use; verify recurring eligibility separately.
  • Test a failed renewal and check customer notifications and the recovery process.
  • Test cancellation and, for the Bluehost implementation, the support workflow for starting a replacement subscription with another payment method.
  • Confirm how refunds and disputes are handled in the processor account and reflected in WooCommerce.

Bluehost’s reviewed gateway article, updated August 13, 2026, does not state plugin, WordPress, WooCommerce, Stripe API, or PayPal API versions. Menu labels and available settings may therefore change with plugin releases or the Bluehost account interface.

Keep hosting billing separate from customer renewals

Your Bluehost hosting account’s automatic billing is separate from subscription charges your store collects. The hosting-account renewal process concerns payment for Bluehost services; it does not manage WooCommerce customer subscriptions. Bluehost’s separate automatic billing documentation covers its own account billing. For a Bluehost hosting renewal issue, its documented manual route is Portal → Billing → Renewal Center → product ellipsis → Renew Now; that is not the procedure for a customer’s store subscription.
