On August 28, 2024, Tech Times reported a broad crypto-market decline and cited $93.52 million in Ether futures liquidations. The figure was a historical report, not a current total: a CNBC account reproduced by Invest Insider News specified that the liquidations were in long Ether positions and attributed the data to CoinGlass.

What happened in the August 28, 2024 report?

Tech Times described Bitcoin, Ether and several other cryptocurrencies falling, alongside liquidations on Bybit and other exchanges. Its article attributed the market prices to CoinMarketCap and the Ether futures liquidation figure to CoinGlass. The $93.52 million figure was reported in CNBC coverage dated August 27 and reproduced by Invest Insider News; that reproduction specifies long Ether positions across centralized exchanges. FXStreet separately reported the same long-ETH liquidation amount using CoinGlass data.

These are reports about a specific market episode in August 2024. They do not establish present-day prices or liquidation totals. Tech Times’ August 28 report, the Invest Insider News reproduction of CNBC coverage and FXStreet’s August 27 coverage are the relevant historical accounts.

What prices did the reports give?

The figures below are the snapshot reported by Tech Times from CoinMarketCap charts on August 28, 2024—not current market prices:

A separate contemporaneous account reproduced by Invest Insider News gave another snapshot, citing Coin Metrics: Bitcoin at $59,504.68, down 6.2%, and Ether at $2,457.61, down more than 8%. The available reports do not establish whether the difference between the Ether prices resulted from the timestamp, venue or data source. Treat each set as its own attributed observation rather than combining them into one market reading.

What did the liquidation figure mean?

CoinGlass data, as reported in the CNBC coverage reproduced by Invest Insider News, put long Ether futures liquidations at $93.52 million across centralized exchanges. A liquidation occurs when an exchange closes a leveraged position after the trader’s collateral no longer meets the requirements for keeping it open. The reported figure refers to positions closed in that episode; it is not the total value of Ether traded, a forecast, or evidence of losses for every Ether holder.

Tech Times described the figure more broadly as Ether futures liquidations. The more specific long-position scope comes from the Invest Insider News reproduction of CNBC’s report. Neither source provides a direct archived CoinGlass dataset in the material available here, so the amount should be understood as a reported historical figure with that attribution.

Why were leveraged positions liquidated?

Tech Times linked the downturn to weaker Asia futures and attributed to Steven Lubka of Swan Bitcoin the interpretation that a material Ether drop contributed to leverage-driven liquidations. In the CNBC account reproduced by Invest Insider News, Lubka said, “Crypto markets moved down sharply, triggering a leverage driven liquidation.” This is a market participant’s explanation of the episode, not proof that Ether’s price move was its sole cause.

How should readers interpret the story now?

The word “continues” in the original headline refers to the market conditions reported in August 2024. It should not be read as a statement about October 2026 or any other current date. Crypto prices and 24-hour performance change continuously; CoinMarketCap’s Bitcoin market page is live data and cannot verify an old snapshot. To assess current conditions, consult current market data and check its timestamp, exchange coverage and methodology rather than carrying forward the 2024 figures.
