The funding was intended to expand Lens’s infrastructure for consumer-facing applications; it was not the same event as a chain launch. Lens Chain went live on April 4, 2025, and Mask Network became steward of Lens’s next phase on January 20, 2026, as Avara shifted to an advisory role.
What the $31 million Lens raise funded
The announcement described a strategic funding round led by Lightspeed Faction. Named participants were Avail, Circle, Consensys, DFG, Fabric Ventures, Foresight Ventures, Superscrypt, Re7 and Wintermute Ventures, along with angel investors. Avara said the funds would support Lens Network’s scaling infrastructure, SocialFi capabilities, consumer and developer applications, onboarding and ecosystem growth. The announcement did not disclose a valuation, financing instrument, token allocation, ownership percentage, line-item budget or investor returns. It should not be described as a token sale or an Aave DAO investment. Lens’s announcement of the raise gives the stated terms and purpose.
The company behind the announcement was Avara, the technology company that emerged from Aave Companies and whose portfolio includes Aave, Lens, GHO and Family. Lens is a social protocol and network, not the Aave lending protocol. Avara’s association with Aave does not establish that Aave governance or the Aave DAO funded or controls Lens. Avara’s company introduction describes the corporate background.
Why build a chain for social applications?
Social products generate frequent small actions: publishing, commenting, following, joining groups and interacting with creators. If each action requires a user to understand a wallet, acquire a gas token and approve a separate transaction, blockchain infrastructure can add friction to ordinary app use. Lens’s case for a dedicated network is that lower, more predictable fees and gasless or signless flows can make those interactions easier to support.

The broader proposition is not just cheaper posting. Lens aims to let applications share user identities, social connections and content-related primitives, while enabling programmable monetization such as tipping, subscriptions, collecting and marketplace transactions. That can help a developer avoid building an entire social graph from scratch. Whether shared onchain infrastructure creates a sufficiently compelling consumer experience—and a durable business—is a separate question from whether it can be built.
How Lens Chain is designed
Ethereum Layer 2 using zkSync technology
Lens describes Lens Chain as an Ethereum Layer 2 built with zkSync’s ZK Stack, a modular framework associated with zkSync Era. It is an application-focused network, not a new sovereign Layer 1 presented as an alternative consensus system to Ethereum. Lens says the chain is EVM-compatible, but developers should not treat that as a guarantee that all Ethereum tooling and contract behavior work unchanged.
Validium and Avail data availability
The original funding announcement described an initial validium design, with a phased plan toward a Volition network using the ZK Stack and Avail for data availability. A validium uses validity proofs but keeps transaction data off Ethereum rather than publishing all of it directly to Ethereum. That separation can reduce costs and support throughput, but it also means data availability relies more heavily on the external data-availability arrangement and system operators than it would in a rollup that posts transaction data to Ethereum.

That distinction matters for a social network as well as for a financial application: profiles, posts, comments and social-graph data affect whether users can access and carry forward their activity. Ethereum settlement, proof generation, Avail data availability and application-level storage are different parts of the system; calling a network an Ethereum Layer 2 does not make their security and availability properties identical. Lens identifies Avail as its data-availability partner. Its technical FAQ and funding announcement describe the design.

GHO for gas, with sponsored interactions
Lens Chain uses GHO, Aave’s stablecoin, as its gas token, with fees denominated in GHO. Lens says dynamic pricing uses onchain price feeds to align gas costs with the Ethereum fee market. The intended benefit is a more familiar, dollar-denominated fee experience; using GHO to pay gas does not by itself mean GHO is the asset securing the chain.
Lens also promotes gasless and signless interactions to simplify onboarding. Those descriptions do not mean every action is free: Lens says users generally do not need GHO to post in Lens applications, but may need it for actions such as collecting posts. Sponsored transactions can also depend on an application’s policies and funding. Collecting, bridging, withdrawing or using contracts outside sponsored flows may involve costs. Lens’s GHO announcement and its FAQ explain the intended gas model.
What Lens V3 changes for developers and users
Lens began as a decentralized social protocol on Polygon. In V3, the design moves from a more integrated social model toward modular primitives that applications can combine. Lens describes the core components as Accounts, Usernames, Graphs, Feeds, Groups, Rules and Actions. Instead of requiring users to gather around one Lens-branded social interface, the idea is that developers can incorporate these building blocks into different products.

Profiles became Accounts, and handles became Usernames. Accounts are described as smart-contract-based identities with managers and permissions, while the other primitives support social connections, content feeds, groups and rules for interactions. Lens says existing profiles were migrated to the account model. The architecture may make identity and social activity reusable across apps, but developers still need to assess which data and permissions are portable in practice and how their app depends on Lens contracts and services. Lens’s V3 introduction outlines the model.

During the transition, Lens reported that its V2 ecosystem included 647,000 Profiles, 640,000 Handles, 45,000 weekly interacting users and 31 million publications. These are figures Lens reported in February 2025; they are not independently audited activity measures or equivalents of monthly active users, retention or revenue.
Lens said it migrated profiles, handles and content from Polygon to Lens Chain using a Rust-based tool, coordinating roughly 125 GB of storage logs during chain genesis. The project said the migration required no user action or payment, and named Orb, Hey, Tape and Soclly among applications supporting the new chain. This was a substantive move to a new protocol and chain, not simply a Polygon RPC change. Lens also said V2 was no longer actively supported for new development and that Polygon/Momoka subsidies were reduced or ended after migration. Lens’s migration account provides the reported figures and engineering details.

Developers should account for changes in contract addresses, APIs, profile assumptions and tooling. Lens warns that developers may need custom zkSync Hardhat or Foundry environments and that compatibility is not identical to Ethereum. Before committing, verify the current chain ID and RPC endpoints, production status of contracts and SDKs, wallet support, hosted API limits and terms, and which organization maintains each service. The Lens Chain explorer is available for inspecting network activity; current integration details should be confirmed in Lens’s developer FAQ.

Mainnet launch in April 2025
Lens Chain launched on mainnet on April 4, 2025, with Lens V3, Grove storage and developer tooling. Lens says the network uses zkSync technology, Avail and GHO for gas, with a focus on predictable fees and consumer onboarding. This delivered the mainnet milestone that the 2024 announcement had projected for early 2025, but a launch is not evidence on its own of broad adoption or a sustainable business. Lens’s mainnet announcement and Avara’s launch summary describe the rollout.

Stewardship shift in January 2026
On January 20, 2026, Avara announced that Mask Network would steward Lens’s next phase. Avara said it would move from day-to-day product development to an advisory role, while Mask focused on consumer applications and adoption. This makes the current project different from a simple continuation of Avara’s original operating arrangement. The transition is a relevant execution and governance consideration; the announcement establishes the stated shift, not a permanent resolution of every responsibility. Lens’s stewardship announcement sets out the change.

When Lens may—or may not—fit a project
Lens may suit a team that needs portable social identity, feeds or graphs, frequent low-cost interactions, or built-in paths to creator monetization, and is comfortable adopting a specialized ecosystem. A developer should weigh that against chain-specific tooling, a different data-availability profile from an Ethereum rollup, and the dependence of the commercial thesis on SocialFi and consumer adoption.
For applications that mainly need broad liquidity, extensive existing infrastructure or general-purpose smart contracts, a larger general-purpose network may be a better fit. For a social product, alternatives such as Farcaster or AT Protocol may also suit teams that want social protocol features without committing to Lens Chain. The choice turns on what the product needs: shared onchain social primitives and the Lens migration ecosystem, or a broader network and different trade-offs.
- Establish what data is secured by Ethereum, what is made available through Avail, and what depends on operators or hosted services.
- Confirm how an app can migrate away and what happens to identity, content references and graph data.
- Check who maintains the tools and contracts after the Mask stewardship change, and what upgrade, pause or administrative controls exist.
- Model gas sponsorship and GHO availability for actions users actually take; gasless onboarding does not remove every payment path.
What the raise does—and does not—show
The $31 million round signaled investor backing for Lens’s infrastructure and ecosystem plan. Lens subsequently launched its chain and migrated its social protocol, so the story advanced beyond a financing announcement. The available figures do not establish retention, revenue or mass-market product fit, and the raise did not disclose a spending breakdown or token economics. The harder test is whether the new chain and modular protocol can help applications attract and retain users while delivering reliable data access and workable developer economics.
