There is no single best Microsoft certification: the right choice depends on the job you want and the skills you can demonstrate. For broad Azure infrastructure, start with AZ-104; for Power BI analysis, PL-300; for security operations, SC-200; and for Fabric data engineering, DP-700. Several exams that were relevant in 2025 have since retired, so this guide distinguishes those historical choices from credentials to consider now. Salary figures below are U.S. occupational medians—not pay guarantees for certification holders.
Microsoft and Pearson VUE information was checked August 16, 2026. Always confirm that an exam is available in your country and review its current study guide before paying or preparing.
What counts as a Microsoft certification?
Microsoft distinguishes exam-based certifications from Applied Skills. Certifications are organized into Fundamentals, Associate, Expert, and Specialty levels and validate skills tied to job responsibilities. Applied Skills use interactive, lab-based assessments for narrower tasks. Training courses and Microsoft Learn learning paths can help you prepare, but completing a course is not itself a certification.
Role-based certifications are more useful for career decisions than a generic list of product badges: they are designed around work such as administering Azure, analyzing data, or responding to security incidents. Eligible role-based and specialty certifications generally require annual renewal through a free online assessment; Fundamentals certifications do not expire. Check the specific credential’s rules before planning around renewal.

Best broad starting point for Azure: AZ-104
AZ-104 is the most flexible starting point in this shortlist for someone moving into Azure infrastructure. It covers practical administration across identities and governance, subscriptions and policy, storage and protection, virtual machines, networking, security controls, monitoring, and backup. Work may involve Azure portal tasks as well as Azure CLI, PowerShell, and automation concepts.
It is relevant to Azure or cloud administrators, junior cloud engineers, infrastructure engineers, and systems administrators adding cloud responsibilities. Passing the exam alone does not establish that you can operate a production environment. Build an environment with segmented networking, least-privilege access, Azure Policy, monitoring and alerts, and backup. Automate deployment with Bicep or Terraform, then document how you would troubleshoot permission, connectivity, deployment, and resource-health problems.
Advanced Azure architecture: AZ-305
Azure Solutions Architect Expert requires Azure Administrator Associate plus AZ-305. Microsoft expects advanced knowledge spanning networking, virtualization, identity, security, continuity and disaster recovery, data platforms, governance, Azure administration and development, and DevOps processes. AZ-305 assesses design for identity, governance and monitoring; data storage; business continuity; and infrastructure. See the live certification page and study guide; its English content was updated April 17, 2026.
This is not a sensible first credential for most beginners. Architecture interviews test judgment as well as terminology. Prepare design artifacts: diagrams, threat models, recovery objectives, cost assumptions, network choices, and explanations of why you rejected alternatives. Register using a personal Microsoft account so your exam record is not tied solely to an organization you might leave.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a security certification by the work you want to do
SC-200 for security operations
SC-200 fits security operations analysts, incident responders, and threat hunters working with Microsoft Sentinel and Defender. The role is operational: analyze alerts, investigate incidents, hunt for threats, and coordinate response. Prepare Kusto Query Language (KQL), detection and investigation workflows, and automation or response playbooks. A project should show how an alert became an investigation and what action followed—not merely list products.

SC-500 for the current cloud-security path
AZ-500 was a relevant 2025 choice, but Pearson lists its retirement for August 31, 2026 and identifies Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate (SC-500) as the related replacement. If you are starting now, check the current Microsoft exam transition list and SC-500 availability before committing to AZ-500 study. Retirement dates and replacement availability can affect whether you can sit, retake, or renew an exam.
SC-100 for security architecture
Cybersecurity Architect Expert is for experienced practitioners designing security across identity and access, platform protection, security operations, data and AI, applications, and hybrid or multicloud infrastructure. It requires SC-100 plus at least one qualifying Associate certification, such as Security Operations Analyst, Identity and Access Administrator, or Azure Security Engineer. The English content was updated July 28, 2026; use the current SC-100 page rather than an old exam outline.
Power BI and Fabric: PL-300, DP-600, or DP-700?
PL-300 for Power BI analysts
PL-300 is the clearest fit for a business intelligence analyst building Power BI reports. Microsoft describes work that includes preparing data, modeling it, visualizing and analyzing it, and managing and securing Power BI. Power Query and DAX are central skills, along with communicating with business stakeholders. The credential page lists a 12-month renewal frequency and an April 20, 2026 update; review its current role and objectives.

Make a portfolio project end to end: connect to raw data, clean it in Power Query, create a star schema, write useful DAX measures, build an accessible report, configure row-level security, and explain refresh, gateway, and deployment assumptions. A polished screenshot without a sound model or explanation is weaker evidence.
DP-600 for analytics engineering; DP-700 for data engineering
Choose DP-600 when the target is analytics engineering and Fabric-scale analytics rather than conventional report development alone. Choose DP-700 for Fabric data engineering: ingestion, transformation, orchestration, and pipelines. These are different job emphases, not interchangeable upgrades to PL-300. Align the credential with the actual work and technology stack you want to use.
Developer, DevOps, and networking paths
AZ-400 for DevOps work
AZ-400 suits developers, release engineers, platform engineers, and administrators who already understand development and operations. It covers source control, build and release pipelines, infrastructure as code, deployment strategies, observability, reliability, security integration, and governance. Do not rely on memorized pipeline vocabulary: build a CI/CD pipeline, make it fail deliberately, diagnose the failure, and explain the fix.
AZ-700 for Azure networking
AZ-700 is a focused specialization for designing and implementing Azure networking. It can differentiate someone who has selected networking as a target, but it is narrower than AZ-104 for a person still exploring cloud work. A credible project should show segmentation, connectivity, and the reasoning behind network security choices.

AI-102 was a reasonable Azure AI engineering recommendation in 2025, but Pearson lists it as retired June 30, 2026 and names Azure AI App and Agent Developer Associate (AI-103) as its related replacement. For AI fundamentals, AI-900 also retired June 30, 2026; the listed replacement is AI-901. Check the transition list for availability before enrolling or scheduling.
An AI credential is not a promise of an AI job. A hiring portfolio should demonstrate programming, APIs or SDKs, data handling, evaluation and testing, security and responsible AI, and deployment or monitoring. Include retrieval or agent integration when it matches the role, and show how you tested failure cases rather than only a successful demo.
AZ-204 is no longer a current new-certification recommendation
AZ-204 was the Azure Developer Associate option in 2025, but Pearson lists it as retired July 31, 2026 and identifies Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate (AI-200) as its related replacement. Readers choosing a developer credential now should verify AI-200’s scope and availability rather than treating AZ-204 as an active route.

Beginner certifications: useful orientation, limited job proof
For a first look at a Microsoft area, the Fundamentals options include AZ-900 for cloud, SC-900 for security, compliance, and identity, DP-900 for data, and PL-900 for Power Platform. They can build vocabulary, support résumé screening, and suit people who need a conceptual introduction, including nontechnical professionals.
They do not normally prove that you can administer Azure, secure an environment, build a data pipeline, or run production systems. A technical beginner should choose one relevant Fundamentals credential only if it helps orientation, then move toward an Associate role certification and build a practical project. Avoid collecting introductory badges in place of demonstrable skills.
What salary can a Microsoft certification lead to?
No Microsoft exam sets a salary, and occupational titles do not map neatly to exam codes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ May 2025 national wage table reports these annual medians:
| Career direction | Closest BLS occupation used as context | May 2025 U.S. median annual wage |
|---|---|---|
| AZ-104 cloud administration | Network and computer systems administrators | $103,680 |
| AZ-305 architecture | Computer network architects (an approximate comparison) | $139,580 |
| SC-200 or cloud security | Information security analysts | $132,510 |
| PL-300 analytics | Computer systems analysts (approximate; no direct Power BI analyst category) | $114,610 |
| DP-600 or DP-700 data work | Database administrators | $110,090; database architects: $144,440 |
| AZ-400 DevOps | Software developers or systems administrators; neither is an exact match | $148,100 for software developers; $103,680 for network and computer systems administrators |
These figures cover workers across experience levels, locations, industries, education, and technology stacks; they are not salaries after certification. More senior work often pays more because of scope, experience, and responsibility, not simply because the worker passed an Expert exam. Security pay can also vary with industry, location, and clearance. Use the BLS May 2025 national wage data as broad context and check state or metropolitan figures before making a personal salary estimate. BLS occupation pages provide additional context for information security analysts, computer network architects, and software developers.

Exam cost, preparation, and retirement checks
Exam fees vary by the country or region where the exam is proctored, so there is no reliable universal price. Microsoft Learn offers self-paced preparation and practice assessments; neither substitutes for lab work. Use the official Microsoft Learn training and credentials portal alongside a project. Azure resources can incur charges; check current terms in the Azure portal and monitor usage rather than assuming a free credit or tier will cover a project.
Before booking, confirm the credential page, exam study guide, retirement notice, country availability, and delivery options through Pearson VUE’s Microsoft exam page. Online proctoring can be convenient but requires a compatible system, camera, identity verification, stable connection, and suitable workspace; a test center may be preferable if those conditions are difficult. Microsoft advises using a personal Microsoft account to preserve access to exam records if an employer account changes.
Retirement matters especially if you are already studying an older exam. Pearson states that a retired exam is no longer available for testing, a failed candidate cannot retake it, and the associated certification cannot be renewed after retirement. If you are close to a confirmed retirement date, check the exact date and your retake contingency before deciding whether to finish or switch. Exam objectives can also change: AZ-305 and SC-100 had English content updates in 2026, so always study from the live guide.
Why a certification may not produce interviews
A credential can help structure learning, signal familiarity with Microsoft tools, support an internal promotion, or help a résumé pass an initial screen. It does not by itself establish production troubleshooting, architecture judgment, stakeholder communication, incident handling, cost management, secure implementation, or performance under pressure.

- If the credential does not match the job, target a role-aligned path rather than adding unrelated badges.
- If you have no project evidence, build two or three small role-specific examples and document decisions, failures, and fixes.
- If your résumé names products but not outcomes, explain what you built, secured, automated, analyzed, or improved.
- If interviews expose gaps in fundamentals, strengthen networking, identity, scripting, Linux, or data concepts relevant to the role.
- If you are applying above your experience level, target an attainable adjacent role while building evidence for the next step.
