If you want music you can keep, look for a purchase that gives you ordinary downloadable files—not merely an offline button inside a streaming app. A DRM-free MP3, AAC, FLAC, WAV, or similar file can be copied to your own computer, backed up, and played without an active subscription.
There is one important financial caveat: “keep forever” describes the file you download, not a guarantee that a store will preserve your account or redownload link indefinitely. Rights holders can remove albums, stores can change their catalogs, and accounts can become inaccessible. Download purchases promptly and keep at least two backups.

1. Bandcamp: best overall for music you can actually keep
Bandcamp is the strongest all-purpose choice if you buy music from independent artists, small labels, or genres that are poorly represented in mainstream stores. Its downloads are DRM-free, and a release may offer MP3 V0, MP3 320, FLAC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, ALAC, WAV, or AIFF. The exact choices depend on what the artist supplied.
That artist-controlled catalog is both Bandcamp’s advantage and its limitation. You may find an unusual release in several formats, but you should check the format and quality before paying. A high-resolution option is not guaranteed, and Bandcamp does not magically improve a low-quality source file.

After buying, you can download from the checkout page, the receipt email, the web Collection page, or the desktop Purchases page. To redownload later, sign in, open the gear menu, and choose Purchases, or use the original receipt link.
Bandcamp purchases commonly arrive as ZIP archives. Download and extract them on a computer, then organize the files in your music library. Very large discographies may require multiple downloads. If a link has expired or a purchase is missing, you may need account recovery or Bandcamp support.
On iOS, Bandcamp can download and unzip files through the Files app, but it cannot add those files directly to Apple’s Music app. If you want them in Apple Music, download them to a computer and sync them through Finder.
2. iTunes Store: best for mainstream music and Apple devices
The iTunes Store is still a purchase store, separate from an Apple Music subscription. It is a practical option for major-label singles, popular albums, and catalog music when you want a simple purchase that works across Apple devices and Windows.
Current iTunes Store music is generally DRM-free iTunes Plus audio encoded as 256-kbps AAC. That is not MP3, although it is a standard audio file that can be played on many devices and converted for personal use when necessary. Older purchases may still be DRM-protected, so an old iTunes library should not automatically be treated like a new iTunes Plus purchase.
How to buy from the iTunes Store
- On a Mac: Open the Music app, select iTunes Store in the search area or sidebar, find the release, and click the price or Buy.
- On Windows: Open the Apple Music app, select iTunes Store, find the album or song, and select its price. If the store is missing, open the sidebar actions button, choose Settings > General, and enable iTunes Store under Show.
- On iPhone or iPad: Open the iTunes Store app, tap Music, choose the release, tap its price, and sign in with the Apple Account used for the purchase.
To redownload in Apple Music for Windows, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, choose Purchased, select Albums or Songs, and click the download button. In iTunes for Windows, use Account > Purchased, select Music, and download the item. On iPhone, use iTunes Store > More > Purchased > Music.

Apple says purchased media can be downloaded permanently to compatible devices, but it also warns that a title may become unavailable for future redownload if Apple loses distribution rights. Download a local copy after buying. On Windows, computer authorization and the correct Apple Account can also affect whether a purchase appears.
3. Qobuz Download Store: best for lossless and hi-res music
Qobuz is a good fit when sound quality matters more than obtaining the smallest possible file. Depending on the release, it sells 16-bit/44.1-kHz CD-quality files and higher-resolution files up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Formats can include FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC, MP3, AAC, DSD, and DXD.

Open an album, select the available quality in the upper-right portion of the album page, click Add to basket, choose Access Payment, and click Pay. For later access, sign in, click your name, choose My profile > My Purchases, and select Access Download.
Qobuz now supports downloading purchased albums directly in a browser, without its Downloader application. There are several practical limitations:
- Disable the browser’s pop-up blocker for the first download.
- The download may appear inactive while Qobuz prepares the ZIP file.
- Browser downloads can take longer than the Downloader application.
- Albums with more than 100 tracks are not offered as ZIP files.
- There is no single “download all albums” button.
- Browser ZIP downloads do not include bonus content or album covers.
Qobuz states that purchases are DRM-free, but it also warns that rights holders can withdraw albums later. Treat the account as a way to retrieve a purchase—not as your only archive.
4. 7digital: a useful alternative for MP3 and FLAC
7digital can be valuable when a particular album is not available from Bandcamp or Qobuz. Its listed options include 256-kbps or 320-kbps MP3, 16-bit FLAC, and 24-bit FLAC. Not every release includes every format.

To download, sign in, open My Music or the purchase locker, select the album artwork, and click Download Zip. You can also use the blue download button beside an individual track.
The files can be played in the player of your choice. One compatibility issue matters for Apple users: iTunes does not support FLAC. Use a FLAC-compatible player or convert the files to ALAC if you want them in an Apple-centered library.
Do not assume you can simply use whichever 7digital country store has the best catalog or price. 7digital says current label-compliance rules may require both residency in the store’s country and a payment card issued in that country. A foreign storefront may reject the transaction or violate its purchasing requirements.
5. HDtracks: best for audiophile-focused releases
HDtracks concentrates on high-resolution music and audiophile labels rather than inexpensive MP3 singles. The site describes its purchases as downloads customers own for life and says they can be played without an internet connection after download. The available format and resolution are shown for each album, so check those details before paying.

Because the process depends on both an account and a dedicated downloader, move the files into your own storage and create backups instead of relying on the HDtracks account.
High-resolution is not automatically better value. A 24-bit/192-kHz label describes the file’s resolution, not necessarily the quality of the original recording or mastering. If you cannot hear a meaningful difference, a cheaper lossless or 320-kbps purchase may be the more sensible use of your money.

6. Juno Download: best for DJs and electronic music
Juno Download is particularly strong for house, techno, drum and bass, trance, and related DJ catalogs. Current release pages show DRM-free 320-kbps MP3, WAV, FLAC, ALAC, and AIFF options, although the formats vary between releases.
For everyday library use, 320-kbps MP3 includes embedded artist and title information plus artwork. WAV is uncompressed but may lack embedded metadata and artwork. FLAC includes metadata and artwork but may not work with iTunes, iPods, or Windows Media Player. ALAC is the lossless option described as compatible with iTunes and iPod.

What does not count as owning a digital music file?
Apple Music subscription downloads
Downloading a song for offline listening through Apple Music does not create a permanent purchase. The download is tied to the subscription and Apple Music app. It cannot be handled like a purchased file that you manually transfer and keep after canceling. If ownership matters, use the iTunes Store purchase button instead.
Amazon Music Unlimited and similar services
Offline downloads from a streaming subscription are generally encrypted, app-controlled caches. They are not MP3 or FLAC files you can keep after the subscription or entitlement ends. “Download” describes offline access, not ownership, unless the transaction specifically provides an ordinary downloadable file.
How to protect a digital music purchase
- Download immediately. Do not leave purchases in a store locker for months or years.
- Check the files. Open several tracks, confirm the album is complete, and inspect the format and resolution.
- Keep the original archive. Save the ZIP file, receipt email, order number, and purchase account details.
- Make two backups. For example, keep one copy on your computer and another on an external drive or reputable cloud-storage service.
- Use a sensible format. MP3 is broadly compatible; AAC works well in Apple ecosystems; FLAC and ALAC preserve lossless audio; WAV may require more manual metadata work.
- Do not overspend on numbers. Compare the mastering and your listening needs before paying extra for 24-bit or 192-kHz files.
A good ownership test is simple: can you locate an ordinary audio file, copy it to another drive, and play it without logging into the store or maintaining a subscription? If not, you may have offline access rather than a durable purchase.

What is the best store for buying music you can keep?

Are iTunes Store songs MP3 files?

Choose Bandcamp for the best combination of ownership, independent catalogs, and format choice; choose the iTunes Store for mainstream music and Apple integration; choose Qobuz or HDtracks when lossless or hi-res files justify the cost; and use 7digital or Juno Download for catalog gaps and DJ-focused releases.
Whatever store you use, the purchase is not truly protected until the files are on your own storage. Download them, test them, preserve the order information, and maintain two backups.
