Google is reportedly planning to move the new-product-introduction work for its premium Pixel phones from China to Vietnam during 2026. That is a significant supply-chain shift, but it is not evidence that Google is leaving China: the report says development of the lower-cost Pixel A series is expected to remain there for now, and it does not establish that all Pixel components or production will move.
What the report says is moving
On January 13, 2026, Reuters reported on a Nikkei Asia account that Google planned to shift the development and manufacturing process for high-end Pixel phones to Vietnam, beginning in 2026. The named product families were Pixel, Pixel Pro and Pixel Fold. The account was based on sources familiar with the matter; Google had not publicly confirmed the plan in the cited coverage. Reuters’ report and a Vietnam Government Portal summary describe an expected transition, not a completed one.
The distinction matters: the reporting concerns premium Pixel development and manufacturing work, especially the production-launch process called NPI. It does not say that Google is withdrawing from the Chinese market, relocating every Google hardware operation, or making every Pixel entirely in Vietnam.
What NPI means—and why its location matters
New product introduction (NPI) is the work of turning a phone design into a repeatable production process. It can involve preparing production lines and tooling, coordinating suppliers, running trial builds, checking whether the design can be manufactured consistently, and testing and refining the process before mass production.

Moving NPI is more consequential than moving only final assembly. The teams and suppliers that solve production problems during launch build experience that can shape later manufacturing runs. But NPI is not synonymous with product design, component sourcing, final assembly, testing in every market, or distribution. The report does not map all those activities or identify which suppliers and parts would move. 9to5Google’s explanation of the NPI report provides additional technical context.
Which Pixel models are reportedly included?
| Product family | What the report indicates |
|---|---|
| Pixel | Premium Pixel models are included in the reported Vietnam NPI and manufacturing shift. |
| Pixel Pro | Included in the reported premium-phone shift. |
| Pixel Fold | Included in the reported premium-phone shift. |
| Pixel A series | Development was expected to remain in China for now. |
The reporting does not identify the first affected generation, specify whether every version or regional batch will follow the same route, or say that all future Pixels will be made in Vietnam. A phone’s development location, assembly location and component origins can differ; a Vietnam-based NPI process alone does not establish where a retail unit was assembled or where its parts came from.

Is Google abandoning Chinese factories?
That is not established. The reported A-series exception points to continued China-based Pixel activity, while the reports also describe Vietnam as already having a role in Pixel-related production. The best-supported description is that Google plans to reduce its reliance on China for premium Pixel launch and manufacturing work while expanding Vietnam’s role—not that it is eliminating China from its supply chain.
Even if premium-phone NPI moves, components may still come from China or other countries, and some assembly or supplier activity may remain there. The available coverage does not provide a component-by-component breakdown, a list of factories, or confirmation that the transition has succeeded.

Why Vietnam, and why keep the A series in China?
Vietnam is an established electronics and smartphone-manufacturing base, and the reporting says Google already has suppliers and Pixel-related production activity there. Expanding work in a country already connected to the product can make a transfer less difficult than starting from scratch. A broader geographic spread can also reduce exposure to risks concentrated in one country, including trade, geopolitical and disruption risks. Reuters’ summary linked the reported shift to supply-chain and geopolitical concerns; Google did not publicly confirm a specific rationale in the cited coverage.
The A-series exception may reflect practical differences between product lines. Existing tooling and supplier relationships, the economics of lower-cost phones, distinct production requirements, and the expense of moving several product lines at once are plausible factors. China’s deep electronics-component ecosystem may also matter. These are industry explanations, not reasons attributed directly to Google in the available reporting.

The manufacturing report does not announce changes to Pixel prices, specifications, software, warranty terms or sales markets. It also does not establish that a Vietnam-made Pixel will cost less, perform better, or be more reliable. Quality depends on the product’s specifications, suppliers, testing and quality-control process, not simply the country named as its place of assembly.
- Price: No verified estimate shows whether the transfer will raise or lower costs for customers.
- Quality: The reporting supplies no comparative testing evidence for phones made in either country.
- Availability and warranty: No change to sales regions, stock or warranty terms was announced in the cited coverage.
- Origin labeling: Manufacturing origin can vary by model, market or batch. NPI location is not enough to determine a unit’s country-of-origin label.
Google’s Pixel 10a announcement confirms that the A-series remained an active product line in 2026. Google announced a U.S. starting price of $499 and availability beginning March 5, 2026; that product announcement does not independently establish where the phone was developed or assembled.

What the shift could mean for Vietnam’s technology sector
If the reported plan proceeds, Vietnam could gain more than assembly work: NPI brings production engineering, supplier coordination and launch-quality expertise. That may create opportunities for technical roles and local suppliers to build capabilities. The scale of any such effect is unknown, however. One company’s Pixel transition would not make Vietnam a replacement for China’s much broader electronics ecosystem, and the report gives no facility, capacity, investment or employment figures.
What remains unconfirmed
- Which Vietnamese factory or contract manufacturer would handle the work.
- Which Pixel generation would be first, and the detailed timing of the transition.
- Which components or supplier relationships would remain in China.
- How much capacity, investment or cost the move would involve.
- Whether Google will make a public confirmation or change consumer-facing terms.
Until those details are established, the story is best understood as a reported plan to relocate important launch work for premium Pixels—not proof that the move is complete or that the supply chain is China-free.
