Google replaced Bard with Gemini on February 8, 2024, and the change was more than a chatbot rename. It gave Google one consumer-facing AI brand for its model family, assistant, paid offering and expanding product integrations—strengthening its ability to compete with OpenAI across subscriptions, search, phones, productivity software and cloud services. It did not prove that Google had overtaken ChatGPT; it made the contest broader and harder to judge by chatbot quality alone.
What changed when Bard became Gemini?
Google announced the change on February 8, 2024. The consumer chatbot called Bard became Gemini, the name Google was already using for its family of multimodal AI models. Google also launched a Gemini mobile app and Gemini Advanced, initially powered by the Ultra 1.0 model. At launch, Google One AI Premium cost $19.99 per month, included 2 TB of storage and came with a two-month free trial, according to Google’s announcement and Associated Press reporting.
Those launch names and terms are historical, not a reliable guide to current plan prices or model availability. Google’s product has changed since 2024; its Gemini updates page documents continuing additions and changes. “Gemini” can now mean several related things: the consumer app, a particular model, a paid consumer offering, Google’s AI features in other products, or its developer and cloud services. The exact meaning depends on the product being discussed.
What the rename did—and did not—mean
For consumers, Gemini replaced the Bard identity. For Google, the name connected the assistant to the underlying model family and made it easier to present AI products under a shared brand. It did not freeze the experience or capabilities in place: model versions, features, availability and plan names can change independently.

Why did Google retire the Bard name?
Google said Gemini better reflected its “most capable family of models.” That rationale points to a practical branding choice: one name could cover the models, chatbot, mobile app and paid tier. It also gave Google a recognizable label to use across consumer, developer and enterprise products.
A broader strategic interpretation is that the company wanted to consolidate a fragmented AI story and reset public perception. Bard had comparatively little momentum as a consumer brand and was linked to the uneven reception of Google’s early chatbot launch. Gemini connected the product more directly to Google DeepMind’s model work and multimodal capabilities. Those are plausible reasons for the move, not a stated explanation that Bard was renamed solely because it had failed.
How does Gemini compete with ChatGPT?
The strategic difference is not simply two chat windows competing for the same user. Google can connect AI to Search, Android, Gmail, Drive, Docs, Workspace, Google Cloud and existing Google accounts. OpenAI built a powerful standalone ChatGPT brand and has expanded into paid consumer plans, business products, APIs, coding and agent-style workflows. Each company is competing to make its AI the useful starting point for more tasks—and to earn recurring revenue from that use.

Integration can matter more to a user than a small difference on a model benchmark. Someone who works in Gmail and Drive may value convenient access to those services; someone with established ChatGPT projects, custom GPTs or coding workflows may prefer not to switch. Access to personal or company data also raises the importance of permissions, privacy controls and account security.

What did the rebrand change for OpenAI?
It sharpened subscription competition
Gemini Advanced entered a similar consumer price range to ChatGPT Plus at its launch, though Google’s original $19.99 bundle combined AI with 2 TB of storage. Do not assume that launch price is Google’s current price: the evidence here establishes the February 2024 offer, not a current August 2026 Gemini price. OpenAI’s pricing page lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month and Pro at $200 per month. OpenAI announced ChatGPT Go at $8 per month in the United States in January 2026; current availability and terms should be checked on the live Go announcement and pricing page.
Google’s bundle illustrates a broader competitive lever: the value of an AI plan may include storage, office software or device integration, not just model access. OpenAI, in turn, has reasons to differentiate through the capabilities and workflows included in its subscriptions. Plan limits and features can vary, so compare the current offer for the tasks you actually use.
It put distribution and search in sharper focus
Google’s established products give it many routes to put Gemini in front of users. That advantage does not guarantee adoption or retention, but a shared brand makes the connections easier to explain. OpenAI’s challenge is to remain a default AI destination even as users encounter assistants inside products they already use.
AI also complicates the future of search. Gemini could help Google answer more complex questions while keeping users within Google’s services; ChatGPT could become a starting point for research, shopping, travel planning and recommendations. That may change conventional search behavior and where commercial discovery happens. It does not establish that users are abandoning Google Search: AI could preserve Google’s role as the interface while changing the format of answers, advertising and publisher referrals.

It widened enterprise and developer competition
Google can sell Gemini through existing Workspace and Google Cloud relationships, while OpenAI competes through ChatGPT business products, its API and coding and agent tools. Alphabet said in its Q4 2025 remarks that nearly 75% of Google Cloud customers had used its vertically integrated AI offerings. That is a company-reported adoption measure; it does not establish paid-seat counts, production use, productivity gains or return on investment. OpenAI said in April 2026 that enterprise represented more than 40% of its revenue. That, too, is a company claim, not an independent comparison of the vendors.
For developers, Google’s model family creates another major provider for multimodal, long-context and coding applications. Google’s Gemini technical paper described a multimodal family available through products including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio and Vertex AI. Its later Gemini 1.5 paper described Pro and Flash variants and emphasized long-context capabilities. The commercial implication is a market organized around model families and tiers, not a single chatbot model. Developers still need to test provider-specific prompt behavior, tool calling, latency, pricing, version stability and migration costs.
What do the user figures tell us?
Alphabet said the Gemini app had 950 million monthly active users in its Q2 2026 remarks, up from more than 650 million in Q3 2025, according to the company’s Q2 2026 and Q3 2025 updates. OpenAI said in April 2026 that ChatGPT had 900 million weekly users in its company announcement.
These are signs of substantial reported adoption, not a reliable head-to-head ranking. The figures use different time periods—monthly versus weekly—and may differ in definitions and product scope. Neither number alone establishes paid conversion, retention, time spent, revenue, market share or model quality. OpenAI’s Signals research describes patterns in its own aggregated ChatGPT usage data; it is useful context, not an independent measurement of the whole market.
How should an individual choose between Gemini and ChatGPT?
There is no universal winner. Pick based on the product fit and total value, not the name or a single benchmark.
- Choose Gemini when: you work heavily in Google’s ecosystem and the available Gmail, Drive, Docs, Android or Search integrations solve real tasks for you. Include any storage or other services in the plan’s value calculation.
- Choose ChatGPT when: its research, coding, voice, file or custom-workflow features suit your routine, or you already rely on projects and tools that would be costly to replace.
- Test both when: your work spans research, coding, document analysis, image or video creation, long-context tasks, mobile assistance or automation. Use the same representative prompts and check accuracy, convenience, limits and correction effort.
- For sensitive information: review the current privacy, retention, training and account-security settings before connecting email, files or other personal data. A convenient integration increases the consequences of an incorrect permission or compromised account.
Public plan prices and features change. OpenAI’s current consumer options are listed on its pricing page; Google’s plan details should be checked at Google One. The initial Google offer of $19.99 per month is a February 2024 launch fact, not confirmation of today’s price.

For businesses
Compare more than model quality or a pilot’s popularity. Google may have an advantage where an organization already uses Workspace and Google Cloud; OpenAI may fit teams that value ChatGPT’s dedicated work environment and developer ecosystem. A reported customer using a feature is not the same as a paid production deployment or measurable business result.
- Security certifications, SSO, MFA, role-based controls and audit logs
- Data retention, training defaults, residency, encryption and contractual terms
- Connectors to the organization’s existing systems and administrative controls
- API access, support, availability, latency and usage-based cost
- Production results, user adoption, measurable productivity and ongoing seat use
- Export, model portability and the cost of switching vendors
For a price reference on the OpenAI side, its Business pricing page lists $20 per user per month with annual billing or $25 per user per month with monthly billing, with a two-user minimum; Enterprise pricing is custom. These are OpenAI’s listed terms, not a like-for-like comparison with Google Workspace or Cloud contracts.

For developers
Evaluate representative workloads across providers. Check API price and rate limits, latency, context window, structured output, tool calling, multimodal input and output, customization, logging, regional availability, safety behavior, version stability and deprecation policy. A multi-model design can route simple classification or summarization to a lower-cost option and reserve more demanding tasks for another model, but it adds integration and monitoring work. Google’s AI Studio and Vertex AI, and OpenAI’s API platform, are starting points for evaluating their respective services.
Did Gemini take market share from ChatGPT?
The available company-reported user counts do not establish that conclusion. A market-share claim would require a defined measure—such as comparable active users, paid subscribers, revenue, API usage or enterprise deployments—using consistent periods and methods. Benchmarks also cannot settle the question by themselves: results depend on the task, prompt, tools, context and evaluation method. The stronger conclusion is that Google became a more credible full-stack competitor, while OpenAI continued expanding its consumer, business and developer offerings.
That competition is increasingly about infrastructure and distribution as well as chatbot performance: compute, cloud platforms, enterprise procurement, data access, developer ecosystems, agent tools and subscription economics all matter. The Bard-to-Gemini move helped Google present those pieces as one platform. It intensified the contest and gave consumers and businesses more choices, but it did not demonstrate that ChatGPT had been defeated.
