Reports point to trouble for the first wave of ultra-thin flagship phones, but Apple and Samsung are not reported to have taken the same action. Apple was said to be reducing iPhone Air production; Samsung was reported to have canceled a planned Galaxy S26 Edge successor after weak demand for the S25 Edge. Neither company has published a complete model-level sales breakdown in the cited material, so the claims should be read as analyst and supply-chain reporting—not confirmed sales totals.
What Apple and Samsung reportedly changed
Apple: lower iPhone Air production estimates
On October 17, 2025, MacRumors reported that Mizuho Securities estimated Apple would reduce iPhone Air production by about 1 million units, while production forecasts for other iPhone 17 models were reportedly raised. That was an analyst estimate, not a figure disclosed by Apple. MacRumors’ report on the initial estimate
Five days later, a separate report citing Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said suppliers had been asked to reduce iPhone Air capacity by more than 80% between late 2025 and the first quarter of 2026. Supplier capacity is not the same as phones sold to customers, and Apple did not publicly confirm an iPhone Air sales figure in the cited material. MacRumors’ report on the supply-chain estimate
Apple’s official fiscal second-quarter 2026 results provide useful context, but not a verdict on the Air: the company said iPhone revenue reached a March-quarter record, driven by demand for the iPhone 17 lineup. The result does not isolate iPhone Air sales. Apple’s fiscal Q2 2026 results

Samsung: a reported S26 Edge cancellation
Samsung launched the Galaxy S25 Edge in May 2025. Its interim report lists dimensions of 158.2 × 75.6 × 5.8 mm and a weight of 163 g; reporting cited a 3,900 mAh battery. The exact thickness figures sometimes vary in secondary coverage, so Samsung’s published 5.8 mm specification is the clearest figure here. Samsung’s 2026 first-quarter interim report
In October 2025, Samsung was reported to have canceled the planned Galaxy S26 Edge and to be considering a return to a conventional Galaxy S26 Plus. The reports said Samsung would sell through existing S25 Edge inventory. This is a reported roadmap decision, not an official Samsung statement attributing the decision to sales. How weak were sales, according to the available estimates?
Sales figures cited for the Galaxy S25 Edge come from Hana Securities data reported secondhand, not a Samsung-published sell-through report. The figures may represent estimates or shipments; the cited coverage does not establish a definitive methodology. They are best treated as directional comparisons rather than audited customer sales.

| Galaxy model | Reported estimate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S25 Edge | About 190,000 in its first month; 1.31 million by August 2025 | Hana Securities estimate cited by MobileSyrup; methodology and whether figures represent shipments or sell-through are unclear |
| Galaxy S25 | About 8.28 million in the comparable period | Estimate cited in the same secondary report |
| Galaxy S25 Ultra | About 12.18 million in the comparable period | Estimate cited in the same secondary report |
MobileSyrup’s report of the Hana Securities estimates also underscores a gap in the public record: there is no equivalent independently verified iPhone Air unit-sales number established by the cited sources. A report of a production reduction does not by itself show how many customers bought the phone or why orders changed.

Why a thinner phone may be a difficult premium sell
Thinness is immediately visible, but its trade-offs are felt over time. The reports do not prove that any one compromise caused weaker demand. They do point to a product-positioning challenge: a thin model must make its lighter, slimmer design valuable enough to outweigh what buyers may give up.
- Battery endurance: A thinner chassis leaves less room for battery capacity. Capacity alone does not determine battery life, so buyers should consult independent endurance tests for their own usage patterns.
- Camera flexibility: Space constraints can make it harder to fit large sensors and multiple lenses, including telephoto hardware. Compare the actual camera system, not just the phone’s profile.
- Heat and sustained performance: Gaming, long video recording, navigation, and cellular use generate heat. A thin design can make thermal management more difficult, though the practical effect depends on the specific device and workload.
- Price versus capability: If a slim model is priced near a conventional flagship while offering fewer features, buyers may prefer the standard or Pro version.
- Durability and repair: Some buyers may worry about drops, bending, or repair costs. Those concerns should be checked against model-specific durability information and repair pricing rather than assumed from thinness alone.
- Limited differentiation: A lighter phone can be more comfortable in a pocket or hand, but that everyday benefit may not outweigh battery or camera compromises for everyone.
- Overlap with the rest of the lineup: Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s reported interpretation was that the regular iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro already addressed much of the high-end market, leaving limited room for another premium form factor. The report of Kuo’s interpretation
What the reports do—and do not—say about demand
Production, capacity, shipments, inventory, and customer sell-through describe different stages of a product’s journey. A supplier-capacity reduction may reflect a change in a company’s forecast; it is not a retail-sales tally. Similarly, an analyst estimate may be useful for spotting a trend without establishing the precise number of phones customers purchased.

Regional results can differ. The iPhone Air reportedly sold out quickly in China, while other reporting described weaker demand in Western markets. A launch sellout can also result from limited initial inventory, so it is not proof of sustained demand across a country or worldwide. The broader iPhone 17 family’s strong reported revenue is relevant context, but cannot establish how the Air performed on its own. MacRumors’ report on production and regional demand
Nor does a weak estimate necessarily mean a product was a failure by its intended target. A company may plan a niche model at lower volume than its standard or Ultra flagship. The available figures do not establish whether either thin phone met its internal sales target.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat this could mean for future phones
Samsung’s reported decision makes a near-term Galaxy S26 Edge less likely, but it does not prove the company has permanently abandoned thin phones. The engineering work could inform a later redesign or appear in another type of device. Likewise, Apple could revisit the Air concept if a future model better balances slimness with battery, camera, and thermal performance; the cited reports do not confirm a future product plan.

The broader lesson may be that thinness works better as one benefit among several than as the main reason to buy a premium phone. Manufacturers may prioritize battery and camera improvements in conventional flagships, or pursue new form factors such as foldables, where a thin profile serves a different purpose. These are plausible directions, not announced outcomes.
How to decide whether a thin phone is worth buying
For a personal-finance decision, compare the total value you expect to get over the time you will keep the phone—not just its launch appeal or a possible discount. Check current prices and trade-in offers directly because the cited reporting does not establish reliable August 2026 prices or availability.
- A thin model may suit you if low weight, pocket comfort, and the slim design are daily priorities and you are comfortable with its specific battery and camera capabilities.
- A conventional flagship may be better value if battery endurance, camera versatility, gaming, or sustained workloads matter more than thinness.
- Compare before paying by checking independent battery tests, camera features, weight in grams, repair costs, case availability, and regional cellular compatibility—including whether the version you are buying relies on eSIM.
- Do not infer support problems from a production report. A manufacturing cut or canceled successor does not itself mean the current model is unusable or that software support will end early.
- Treat discounts as one factor, not a verdict. Overstock may create promotions, but availability, resale value, and the cost of accessories can affect the phone’s long-term value.
