Google offered voluntary buyouts to some U.S.-based employees in the organization overseeing core Search and much of its advertising business, as well as in Core engineering, Research, Marketing and Communications, according to a report published June 10, 2025 by The Information. It was a reported offer to leave—not confirmation that Google had laid off Search employees or that every worker in those groups was eligible.
What Google reportedly offered
The offer was described as a voluntary buyout, or voluntary-exit arrangement. Its principal target was Google’s Knowledge and Information organization, which houses core Search and much of Ads. The reported offer also covered employees in Core engineering, Research, Marketing and Communications. The reported geographic focus was the United States; the coverage did not establish that the program applied to Googlers worldwide.
The Information did not disclose the buyout amount, severance formula, eligibility rules, deadline, participation cap or number of employees invited. It also did not specify how the offer would affect equity, benefits, bonuses or immigration sponsorship. Those terms should not be inferred from generic descriptions of severance packages.
The Information’s report on the offer is the source for its scope and terms as reported.

Is this a Google layoff?
Not on the facts reported. A voluntary buyout gives eligible employees the choice to leave, usually in exchange for severance or other benefits. An involuntary layoff is an employer-directed job elimination. The terms of Google’s reported offer were not made public, so the exact package cannot be characterized more specifically.
A buyout can still be part of a workforce-reduction strategy. If too few employees accept, or if a company still wants to eliminate particular roles, it may later pursue targeted layoffs. The June 2025 report said the offer could precede layoffs; it did not establish that layoffs were inevitable or confirm a final number of departures from this program.

Why Search and Ads are in the picture
The offer came as Google was reshaping its workforce and investment priorities around AI, while facing competition from products such as ChatGPT and uncertainty about how generative AI may change information discovery and advertising. Those factors provide context, not proof that AI had already made the affected jobs redundant or that the offer had one single cause.
Alphabet’s financial figures also argue against reading the offer as evidence that Search had collapsed. The company reported Google Search and other revenue of $198.084 billion in 2024, up from $175.033 billion in 2023, in its 2024 annual report. Alphabet’s second-quarter 2025 earnings materials described double-digit revenue growth in Search and YouTube advertising while the company continued rolling out AI Overviews and AI Mode. A business can grow while its employer changes staffing, automates work or shifts roles and budgets toward new priorities.
Alphabet also said in its 2024 annual-report description of Search that Google handled more than 5 trillion searches annually and that AI Overviews had increased commercial-query volume. Those are company statements about its business, not independent measures of the buyout’s effects.
How the offer fits Google’s reported 2025 workforce actions
The June report described a sequence of workforce changes across several organizations. These were reported events, not a publicly confirmed companywide restructuring plan:

- Earlier in 2025, Google offered buyouts in Platforms and Devices, which includes Android, Chrome and Pixel. The Information later reported hundreds of layoffs in that organization by April, including a reduction affecting roughly 10% of its Privacy Sandbox division.
- Google also reportedly offered buyouts in Legal and Finance.
- In May 2025, around 200 employees in the Global Business Organization were reportedly laid off, followed by a smaller round of cuts in Ads Safety late in the month.
The report did not identify Cloud or YouTube as participating in the Search-and-Ads offer. That means they were not identified as included in the reported coverage; it is not definitive proof that no employee in either organization was affected by another program. Google DeepMind was also described in secondary coverage as outside the affected groups, but that point was not established by the cited direct report.

Alphabet’s 2023 annual-report materials describe a reduction of approximately 12,000 roles announced in January 2023. That was an involuntary workforce reduction, unlike the voluntary offer reported in 2025. Alphabet reported 183,323 employees at the end of 2024 and approximately $1.0 billion in employee severance and related charges for that year in its 2024 annual report. Those companywide figures do not reveal how many workers were eligible for, or accepted, the later Search-and-Ads offer.

What remains unknown
- How many employees received the offer or accepted it.
- The payment, benefits, equity and transition terms.
- Whether a specific head-count reduction was targeted or whether the offer was capped.
- Whether layoffs followed this offer, or whether any later cuts were directly tied to it.
- Whether Google was reducing overall headcount or primarily shifting hiring and resources among teams.
Without those details, the offer cannot establish the size of any eventual workforce change or its financial effect on Google. Nor does it show that Google is replacing Search or Ads employees with AI. It does show that the reported workforce reshaping reached organizations central to Search and advertising, at a time when Google was investing in AI and adapting those products.
