The appointment reflected McAfee’s focus on consumer security after it sold its enterprise business. Johnson is no longer CEO: McAfee’s 2024 proxy says his tenure ran from June 2022 through October 2023, and Craig Boundy took over effective August 21, 2024.
What McAfee announced
McAfee named Johnson president and chief executive officer on May 24, 2022, with the change effective June 13. He succeeded Peter Leav, who was stepping down; the company announcement does not establish that Leav was fired or explain the board’s reasons for the leadership change. McAfee’s announcement described Johnson as an executive with more than 25 years of experience in consumer technology.
Why a consumer-business executive fit McAfee’s direction
Johnson joined McAfee from Intuit, where he was executive vice president and general manager of the Consumer Group. His background also included leadership or marketing roles at Advance Auto Parts, Best Buy, Gillette, Kodak, S.C. Johnson, Motorola and Kraft Foods. He served on Qualcomm’s board and earned a bachelor’s degree in operations research from the U.S. Air Force Academy, according to McAfee.
That résumé points to experience building and marketing consumer businesses more clearly than to a technical cybersecurity-research background. The appointment made sense in the context of McAfee’s stated goal: expanding consumer online protection and building an integrated set of services for individuals and families. McAfee’s chairman, Bruce Chizen, linked the choice to accelerating growth and continuing that transformation. Those statements describe the company’s ambitions, not proof that the strategy or appointment achieved particular results.

The company was at a strategic turning point
The CEO change came after McAfee had separated from its enterprise-security business and shifted its focus toward consumer protection. The enterprise operation was sold to Symphony Technology Group in 2021; it is distinct from the consumer McAfee business Johnson led. In March 2022, an investor group led by Advent International and Permira completed an acquisition valued by McAfee at more than $14 billion.
That ownership and business context helps explain why the appointment was more than a routine executive handoff: McAfee was entering a new phase as a consumer-focused company under new ownership. It does not establish that the transaction itself dictated Johnson’s selection or that the company was returning to enterprise security. A brief corporate-history account in SecurityWeek’s contemporaneous coverage traces earlier ownership changes, including Intel’s 2010 acquisition for approximately $7.68 billion, Intel Security branding, and McAfee’s subsequent return to independent ownership after TPG acquired a controlling stake in 2016.

What Johnson was expected to do
McAfee framed the mandate around growth and consumer protection: develop an integrated platform, build on the company’s brand and customer base, respond to evolving online threats, and increase value for customers and partners. In practical terms, the leadership choice suggested emphasis on consumer product strategy and business growth, rather than a shift toward enterprise security. The announcement alone does not show which specific products or initiatives Johnson later delivered, or establish a financial target, performance outcome, or direct effect on customers.

Johnson’s tenure ended in October 2023, according to McAfee’s 2024 proxy statement. McAfee later appointed Craig Boundy president and CEO, effective August 21, 2024. The company’s announcement identifies Boundy as Johnson’s successor. Johnson should therefore be described as a former McAfee CEO, not its current leader.
