In July 2025, Matt Turnbull, then an executive producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing, suggested that people facing layoffs could use tools such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot to ease the emotional and practical burden of job loss. His deleted LinkedIn post included ordinary job-search ideas—résumé edits, networking drafts and a search plan—as well as a prompt about reframing imposter syndrome. It was advice from an executive, not a Microsoft mental-health program, and it drew criticism for treating a chatbot as a response to a deeply human and financially consequential event.
What did the Xbox producer say?
Microsoft announced in July 2025 that it planned to eliminate up to roughly 9,000 jobs, including roles connected to Xbox. Turnbull’s LinkedIn post appeared in that context. Reports identified him as an executive producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing and said he recommended ChatGPT or Copilot as ways to reduce the “emotional and cognitive load” of job loss. The post was deleted a few hours after it was reported, according to Engadget’s contemporaneous account.
Because the original post is no longer available on LinkedIn, accounts of its contents rely on screenshots and contemporaneous reporting. The examples attributed to it ranged from drafting application materials to asking an AI system to help reframe feelings of imposter syndrome. Headlines that say Turnbull told workers to “manage their emotions with AI” compress those distinct suggestions into one claim; they should not be mistaken for a formal instruction from Microsoft to use AI as therapy. Reporting on the post describes both career assistance and emotional reframing.
What AI tasks did the post propose?
The reported examples mixed practical career support with a more sensitive suggestion about emotional reassurance:

- Plan a job search: Ask for a 30-day plan that leaves time to regroup, research roles and apply without burning out.
- Improve application materials: Generate résumé-bullet alternatives focused on impact, tailor a résumé to a job description, or revise a LinkedIn “About” section.
- Explore options: Identify transferable skills and brainstorm adjacent roles or career pivots.
- Draft outreach: Prepare a warm message to former colleagues or someone at a studio with an open role.
- Reframe self-doubt: Ask for help responding to imposter syndrome after a layoff and recalling personal strengths.
The first four are drafting, organization and brainstorming tasks. The last moves into emotional support. A fluent answer may help someone put a feeling into words, but that does not establish that a chatbot can assess a person’s mental health or provide clinical care.
Why did the advice provoke backlash?
The reaction was about more than whether a chatbot can edit a résumé. Three parts of the context made the suggestion especially fraught:

- Who said it: Advice from an executive lands differently from a tip shared by a peer. Workers could hear it as a company representative responding to people losing their jobs, rather than as a neutral suggestion from a career coach.
- When it appeared: The post followed a major round of layoffs affecting Microsoft and Xbox workers. People facing lost income, benefits or work authorization may need concrete help and human contact, not only a productivity tool.
- What AI symbolized: Microsoft was investing heavily in AI, and reporting days after the cuts said the company had internally cited more than $500 million in annual call-center savings tied to AI tools. That was a reported internal claim, not proof that AI caused the Xbox layoffs or any particular job elimination. But it helped explain why the juxtaposition stung. TechCrunch reported on the claimed savings.
Critics saw the post as tone-deaf: a chatbot was being offered as a response to grief, insecurity and financial anxiety, when people might reasonably expect clear information about severance, benefits, counseling and human points of contact. On July 24, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged the “uncertainty and seeming incongruence” surrounding job eliminations at a company otherwise performing strongly. His message addressed the layoffs and their context.
The criticism does not mean AI is useless for job-search administration. It means that the usefulness of a drafting tool does not make it an adequate substitute for an employer’s obligations, a supportive community or professional care. The available reporting does not establish that AI caused these specific layoffs, nor does it establish what individual workers were offered in counseling, outplacement, immigration assistance or other support.

When can AI help with a job search?
AI can be a convenient assistant for tasks with a clear, checkable output, particularly when exhaustion makes it hard to start. A worker can ask for several résumé bullet options, a list of interview questions, a weekly search checklist or a first draft of a networking note. It can also help translate experience into terms used in another industry.
Keep the task narrow and retain control of the facts. A model may turn “contributed to” into “led,” invent performance figures, or produce generic outreach that sounds mass-mailed. Before using a draft, check:

- Accuracy: Are dates, responsibilities, tools, shipped products and metrics true?
- Specificity: Does the language reflect your actual contribution and the role you are applying for?
- Voice: Would you say this in a real conversation, or does it sound like generic AI prose?
- Privacy: Did you include confidential employer information, personal identifiers or sensitive details?
- Usefulness: Did the output make the application clearer, or simply longer?
- Verification: Have you checked claims about pay, benefits, immigration, employment law and the job market with an appropriate human or official source?
Do not paste proprietary code, unreleased game details, customer data, internal documents or other confidential material into a consumer AI service. A résumé or portfolio should describe your own work without exposing information you were not authorized to disclose.

A chatbot should not be treated as a licensed mental-health professional, a trusted friend or peer group, or a qualified adviser on severance, benefits, immigration status or discrimination. Nor should a generated answer decide whether someone is qualified for a role; that judgment belongs to the hiring process and the people involved.

AI can help a person organize thoughts or prepare questions for a counselor. It cannot offer the human responsibility and professional duty of care that mental-health treatment requires. OpenAI has said people use ChatGPT for personal support and decisions while discussing work on responses to serious distress and unhealthy emotional reliance. That is a vendor’s account of its own safety efforts, not independent clinical validation of a chatbot as treatment. OpenAI’s statement explains its position.
If you are in immediate danger, thinking about suicide, experiencing psychosis or mania, dealing with abuse, or unable to stay safe, contact emergency services or a crisis service in your location and reach a trusted person. Do not rely on a chatbot as your only support.
A safer order of operations after a layoff
- Secure immediate finances and access. Confirm final pay, severance terms, health coverage, unemployment eligibility, visa or work-authorization implications, and access to personal files. For U.S. unemployment and worker resources, start with the U.S. Department of Labor’s unemployment-insurance information and CareerOneStop. Rules vary by location and individual circumstances.
- Tell people and make concrete requests. Contact trusted friends, family, former colleagues or peers. Ask for specific help: an introduction, a résumé review, a referral, childcare, or simply company.
- Get the right human adviser for the problem. A therapist or community mental-health service can help with distress; a union representative or employment lawyer can address workplace rights; a benefits adviser can help with coverage or unemployment questions; a career counselor or outplacement service can assist with job-search strategy. If available, check whether an employee-assistance benefit continues after termination.
- Use AI only for a bounded deliverable. Ask for three alternative résumé bullets or a draft outreach note, not a verdict on your worth, future or legal position. Remove sensitive information and review every claim before using the result.
- Keep the final story yours. Edit the language until it accurately reflects your work and sounds like you. Do not let a model invent achievements, inflate metrics or flatten the parts of your experience that matter to you.
What employers should provide beyond a chatbot
AI may reduce the friction of drafting, but it cannot explain why a role was eliminated or resolve the financial consequences of losing it. A meaningful employer response should make clear where workers can get information about severance and benefits, who can answer questions, and what career, counseling or immigration support is available. The facts reported about Turnbull’s post do not establish which of those services Microsoft offered to affected employees, so claims about that support should not be inferred from his advice.
For a laid-off worker, the practical distinction is straightforward: use AI as an optional writing and planning assistant, not as the institution or person responsible for helping you through a job loss. A tool can make the next application easier to draft; it cannot make involuntary unemployment emotionally acceptable or replace human care.
