Re:

You should enable 2FA on all of your bank accounts: Here’s why

Enable 2FA on every bank and financial account that supports it. Here is how passkeys, authenticator apps, push approvals, SMS codes, and recovery settings compare.

If a criminal gets your banking password, a password-only account can be opened from anywhere. Multi-factor authentication (MFA)—often called two-factor authentication (2FA)—adds another check, such as a code, passkey, security key, or biometric factor.

The FDIC recommends enabling MFA on every financial account that offers it. That includes checking and savings accounts, credit unions, brokerages, credit-card accounts, payment apps, and other services connected to your money.

Why 2FA matters more for bank accounts

Banking credentials are valuable. An attacker who takes over an account may be able to view balances, add payment recipients, change contact details, transfer funds, or use linked financial information to attack another account.

Passwords are particularly vulnerable because people reuse them, enter them into phishing sites, or expose them in data breaches. The FBI lists phishing, social engineering, reused passwords, and stolen credentials among common routes to account takeover.

2FA helps in the most common scenario: the criminal has your username and password but does not have your second factor. It is not an absolute guarantee. A scammer may still persuade you to provide a code, approve a login, or authorize a transfer yourself.

What counts as two-factor authentication?

MFA uses at least two different categories of proof:

Factor Examples
Something you know Password or PIN
Something you have Phone, authenticator app, security key, or passkey
Something you are Fingerprint or face scan

A fingerprint does not automatically make an account 2FA. It may simply unlock your phone or a passkey. What matters is how the bank’s complete sign-in system is designed.

Which 2FA method should you use?

Choose the strongest option your bank supports. The practical ranking is:

Method Security level Important limitation
Passkey or FIDO security key Strongest Not available at every bank; you need access to the registered device or key.
Authenticator-app code Strong The one-time code can still be entered into a phishing site.
Number-matching push approval Better than one-tap approval A convincing scam can still cause you to approve a fraudulent request.
SMS or email code Better than no MFA SMS can be exposed through SIM swapping; email depends on the security of your email account.

Passkeys and security keys

Passkeys and FIDO security keys use cryptographic authentication tied to the legitimate website or app. Because they do not require you to type a reusable password or code into a fake site, they are designed to resist phishing.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

A security key is a physical device. A passkey can be stored on a phone, computer, or password manager. If your bank supports either option, it is usually the best choice.

Authenticator apps

Apps such as Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and Duo generate time-limited codes. They are generally safer than SMS because the codes do not travel through your mobile carrier. However, they are not phishing-resistant: a fake banking page can ask for the current code and relay it to the real bank.

SMS and email

Do not reject SMS 2FA simply because it is weaker. It is still generally safer than password-only access, so use it when stronger options are unavailable. If your bank lets you remove SMS as a recovery or fallback method after adding an authenticator app or passkey, consider doing so.

How to enable 2FA at your bank

  1. Open the official banking app or manually type the bank’s known web address. Do not follow a security link from an unexpected text or email.
  2. Sign in and open Profile, Settings, Security, Security Center, or Login & Security.
  3. Look for 2-Step Verification, Two-Factor Authentication, MFA, Security Code, or Additional security at sign-in.
  4. Select your preferred method and complete the enrollment test.
  5. Save any recovery codes somewhere offline, such as in a secure password manager or locked physical location.
  6. Review Remember this device, Trusted device, and fallback settings. Remove weaker options where the bank permits it.

There is no standard bank menu, and some banks use risk-based authentication. You may receive an extra verification request only when signing in from an unfamiliar device or making a higher-risk transaction.

Examples of bank-specific settings

  • Chase Mobile: open Profile & Settings > Settings > Security & Privacy. Scroll to Ways you can be more secure, choose Use 2-Step verification for extra security at sign in, and turn it on. Chase also offers passkeys for signing in to chase.com in a supported browser, although its help information says passkeys are not yet available for signing in to the Chase Mobile app.
  • Wells Fargo: look for 2-Step Verification at Sign-On. The bank sends an access code to a registered device, and it recommends keeping contact information current and enabling account alerts.
  • Bank of America: its Security Center includes two-factor and device-related settings such as Remember this device and Review more logins. Verification may appear during an unfamiliar-device login or certain transactions rather than every time you sign in.

Menus change, so confirm that you are using the bank’s official app or website before entering credentials or changing security settings.

2FA mistakes that can still cost you money

Giving a verification code to a caller

A legitimate bank employee should not ask you to read an account verification code to them. A criminal may be waiting for that code to complete a login or password reset.

Hang up, then contact the bank using the number on your card, a statement, or the official app. Do not call a number supplied by the unsolicited caller or text message.

Approving an unexpected push request

Repeated approval prompts may mean someone has your password and is trying to wear you down. Deny the request, change your password, and contact the bank. If the service supports number matching, enter the number shown on the genuine login screen instead of tapping a generic Approve button.

Moving money to a “safe account”

No legitimate bank will tell you to move money to another account, cryptocurrency wallet, or gift card to protect it from fraud. This is a common scam pattern. Call the bank through a verified channel and let its fraud department investigate.

Trusting a remembered device

A trusted device may not request a code at every login. Use that feature only on a personally controlled device. Do not mark a public or shared computer as trusted, and be cautious with a work computer if other people can access its browser profile.

What to do when you lose your phone

Before replacing or wiping a phone, add a backup recovery method and save recovery codes. Confirm that you can sign in through the bank’s official recovery process, then remove the old phone from the trusted-device list if that option exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the phone or number was stolen, or you suspect a SIM swap, contact the bank immediately. Do not disable the old authentication method until the new one works unless the bank instructs you to do so. A phone-number change may disrupt SMS codes and trigger additional identity checks.

What 2FA does not protect against

MFA primarily protects account access. It does not automatically stop:

  • A scammer persuading you to approve a login.
  • A criminal using an already active session or trusted device.
  • A transfer that you personally authorize after being deceived.
  • A compromised email account used for password recovery.
  • Malware or somebody using a stolen, unlocked phone.

Use MFA alongside transaction alerts. Turn on notifications for new logins, password changes, new payees, withdrawals, transfers, and large transactions. Review account activity and connected third-party apps regularly. If you see an unfamiliar login or transaction, contact the provider immediately; do not wait for the next statement.

A simple financial-account security checklist

  • Enable MFA on every bank, credit-union, brokerage, credit-card, and payment account that offers it.
  • Prefer a passkey or security key, then an authenticator app.
  • Use SMS or email codes when they are the only available choices.
  • Disable weaker fallback methods if the service allows it.
  • Store recovery codes offline.
  • Keep your phone number and email address current.
  • Never share a verification code.
  • Deny unexpected push prompts.
  • Review trusted devices and third-party connections.
  • Report suspicious logins, lost phones, suspected SIM swaps, and unauthorized transactions immediately.

FAQ

Is 2FA worth enabling on a bank account if I already have a strong password?

Yes. A strong password can still be stolen through phishing, malware, or a data breach. 2FA adds a separate check that can block a normal login when the attacker has only the password.

Is an authenticator app safer than SMS 2FA?

Usually. Authenticator-app codes are not delivered through your mobile carrier, so they avoid many SIM-swap risks. They can still be phished, however. Passkeys and FIDO security keys provide stronger phishing resistance when supported.

Can my bank still use SMS after I set up an authenticator app?

Possibly. Some services leave SMS enabled as a recovery or fallback method. Check the security settings and disable weaker fallback options if the bank permits it.

What should I do if someone asks for my bank verification code?

Do not provide it. End the conversation and contact the bank through the number on your card or statement, or through its official app. Treat an unexpected request for a code as a scam.

The Bottom Line

Enable 2FA on every financial account that supports it. Choose a passkey or security key when available, an authenticator app next, and SMS or email if those are the only choices. Then protect the second factor itself: never share codes, reject unexpected approvals, avoid trusted devices on shared computers, and monitor transaction alerts.
