Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A Coinbase text can be legitimate: Coinbase uses opt-in SMS for some account communications and supports SMS as a two-step verification method. But a message saying your account is compromised, a transaction is pending, or funds will be lost unless you click a link is a common phishing setup.
The safest test is not the sender name, short code, or existing message thread. Ignore the text’s link and phone number. Open the Coinbase app yourself or type https://www.coinbase.com/ into your browser, then check your account there.
What Coinbase scam texts usually say
Impersonation messages are designed to create panic and move you away from Coinbase’s normal security process. They may claim that:
- You received cryptocurrency or an unauthorized payment.
- A purchase, withdrawal, or transfer is pending.
- Your account has been locked, compromised, or is about to be closed.
- You must click a link to cancel a transaction, verify your identity, or secure your funds.
- You must call a “Coinbase Support” number or provide a verification code.
Coinbase says an unsolicited text claiming that you received unauthorized digital currency is likely phishing, and that it does not send texts to verify transactions. Do not use the message to investigate the alleged transaction. Check the account through the official app or a manually entered Coinbase address instead.

How to tell whether a Coinbase text is a scam
| Warning sign | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| “Act now,” “account closure,” or “funds at risk” | Urgency is meant to stop you from independently checking the claim. |
A link that does not use coinbase.com |
It may lead to a fake login or identity-verification page. Do not trust a shortened link or a link whose displayed text looks legitimate. |
| A request for your password, 2FA code, private key, recovery phrase, or email access | Coinbase employees will not ask for these credentials. |
| A request to send crypto to a “safe” wallet | Moving funds to protect them is a standard impersonation scam tactic. |
| A demand to install remote-access software | Remote access can give a criminal control of your device and accounts. |
| A fee, tax, security deposit, or unlock payment | Paying cryptocurrency to release or recover funds is a major fraud warning. |
| A phone number with instructions not to use the normal app or website | The scammer is trying to control the support channel and prevent verification. |
A genuine Coinbase identity-verification process appears after you sign in through Coinbase. Coinbase says its verification pages use coinbase.com or identification.coinbase.com; it will not ask you to upload identity documents to a non-Coinbase domain.
Do not assume every Coinbase text is fake
“Coinbase never sends text messages” is too broad. Coinbase’s user agreement allows opt-in automated texts containing account details, transaction information, and other communications. SMS can also be used for two-step verification.
That does not make a suspicious message safe. Sender IDs can be spoofed, and a scam may appear in a familiar conversation thread. Coinbase identifies SMS as its least-secure 2FA option and recommends a passkey or security key, or an authenticator-based method where available.
Use this rule: verify the account, not the text. Bookmark https://www.coinbase.com/ or use the official Coinbase app. Never sign in through a link in an unexpected SMS.

What to do with a suspicious Coinbase text
- Do not reply. A response can confirm that your number is active.
- Do not click the link, scan a QR code, or call the number. Do not download an attachment or install software offered by the message.
- Take a screenshot. Preserve the sender, complete message, link, date, and time.
- Forward the text to 7726—which spells
SPAM—through your mobile carrier’s reporting system. - Email the screenshot to [email protected].
- Delete and block the message.
- Report the fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Reporting is useful, but do not delay account security steps if you entered information or sent money.

If you clicked the link but entered nothing
Close the page and do not download anything it offered. Update your phone or computer’s operating system, browser, and security software. Run a security scan if the page downloaded a file or requested remote access.
Then open Coinbase only through the official app or by entering the address manually. Review account activity for unfamiliar sessions, devices, and authorized applications. Coinbase’s account activity tools show active sessions, authorized mobile apps, web sessions, and confirmed devices. Revoke anything you do not recognize.
As a precaution, change your Coinbase password and the password for the email account connected to Coinbase. Use different passwords and secure the email account with strong two-factor authentication.
Recommended Free Tools
If you entered your Coinbase password or 2FA code
Treat the account as potentially compromised. Complete these actions from a device you trust:
- Change your Coinbase password to a new, unique password.
- Change the password for the associated email account.
- Secure the email account with strong 2FA.
- Review and revoke unfamiliar sessions, devices, and applications.
- Replace SMS 2FA with a passkey, security key, or authenticator-based method where available.
- Lock the Coinbase account if unauthorized access may have occurred.
- Contact Coinbase through its official Help Center—not through the text.
To lock the account in the Coinbase app, use Menu → Account & settings → Security → Lock Account. In a browser, sign in through Coinbase and go to accounts.coinbase.com/security, then select Security → Lock Account.

Locking the account signs out all devices and pauses trading, sending, receiving, transfers, and account changes. It is a protective step, not proof that funds have been recovered.
If you sent cryptocurrency or money
Lock the Coinbase account immediately and contact Coinbase Support through the official Help Center. Save the details before deleting anything:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Asset and amount
- Destination wallet address
- Transaction hash
- Date and time
- Coinbase and bank statements
- Screenshots of the text and any related communications
Contact your bank or card issuer if a bank account or card funded the transaction. Report the fraud to local law enforcement and the FTC.
Cryptocurrency transfers are usually not reversible once completed. The FTC recommends contacting the company used to send the cryptocurrency immediately and asking whether the transaction can be reversed, but recovery is not guaranteed. Do not pay a supposed recovery agent, tax collector, or “Coinbase representative” who promises to retrieve the funds. A demand for cryptocurrency in advance to unlock or recover money is another scam.

Use a number only after confirming it on Coinbase’s official Help Center. Do not trust a number supplied by a text, search advertisement, social-media account, caller ID, or unsolicited caller. Coinbase says its staff will not call customers directly to troubleshoot or resolve an account problem.
What Coinbase One protection does—and does not—mean
Some Coinbase One members may have account protection for certain unauthorized outbound crypto transfers caused by account compromise or phishing. The benefit is not available to every member or in every region, and its eligibility conditions matter.
It generally does not cover a transaction that the account holder personally authorized after being deceived. Coinbase also states that stronger authentication, such as a passkey or security key, may be required; weaker SMS 2FA can deactivate the protection after the applicable period. Check the current Coinbase One benefit terms rather than assuming a membership guarantees reimbursement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common claims that need correcting
- “Coinbase never texts.” Not precise. Coinbase can send opt-in automated texts and supports SMS 2FA. The safer warning is that Coinbase says it does not send texts to verify transactions.
- “A familiar sender or short code is safe.” Sender information and message threads are not enough to authenticate a text.
- “Support will call me to fix this.” An unsolicited caller claiming to be Coinbase Support is not a safe support channel. Initiate contact yourself through the official Help Center.
- “I can recover the crypto if I pay a fee.” An advance crypto payment for protection, recovery, taxes, or an unlock is a scam signal, not a normal Coinbase process.

What number should I forward a Coinbase scam text to?
Forward it to 7726, which spells SPAM, through your mobile carrier’s reporting system. You can also send a screenshot to [email protected] and report the fraud at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
What if I clicked a Coinbase scam link?
Close the page, do not download or install anything, update your device and security software, and run a scan if appropriate. Then check Coinbase account activity through the official app or manually entered website. If you entered credentials, change your Coinbase and email passwords immediately and consider locking the account.
Can Coinbase reverse cryptocurrency sent to a scammer?
Crypto transfers are typically irreversible, so recovery is not guaranteed. Contact Coinbase immediately with the transaction hash, destination address, amount, and timing. Do not pay anyone who promises recovery in exchange for an advance fee or cryptocurrency.
The Bottom Line
Do not click, reply, call, or send crypto in response to an unexpected Coinbase text. Check the account independently through the official app or manually entered website, report the message to 7726 and [email protected], and lock the account immediately if you shared credentials or see unauthorized activity.
