On 11 June 2025, GOAL reported that Coventry had sold its clause back to Sporting the previous summer, attributing the claim to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook. On 12 June, the Coventry Observer reported, citing sources in Portugal, that a 10% clause remained active. Neither account, on its own, establishes the later contractual position.
What did the two June 2025 reports say?
| Report | What it said about Coventry’s right | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| GOAL, 11 June 2025 | Coventry would not benefit from a future Gyökeres transfer because it had sold its sell-on clause back to Sporting the previous summer. GOAL described the clause as reportedly 10%. | The sell-back claim was attributed to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook; the amount Coventry received was not disclosed. |
| Coventry Observer, 12 June 2025 | A 10% sell-on clause was still active if Gyökeres left Sporting that summer. | The paper attributed this account to sources in Portugal. It was not presented as official confirmation. |
The reports conflict over whether the right had been sold or remained in force. Neither report supplied public documentary proof of the later change, so the status should not be described as officially resolved.
What were the original Coventry-to-Sporting terms?
Coventry confirmed Gyökeres’s 2023 departure for a significant undisclosed fee, described at the time as the club’s highest ever, plus add-ons. BBC Sport reported the fee was close to £20 million. BBC Sport’s account of the transfer also records that he scored 43 goals in 116 appearances for Coventry.
A 2023 Sky Blues Blog summary of Sporting’s public filing gave the terms as €20 million fixed plus up to €4 million in conditional add-ons, with Coventry entitled to 15% of a future transfer, potentially reduced to 10% depending on partial achievement of objectives. Those detailed terms are reported here as the blog’s summary, not as independent verification of whether Coventry later changed or sold the right.

Would a sell-on clause mean 10% of the whole fee?
Not necessarily. The descriptions differ: the Sky Blues Blog’s account of the original terms calls the entitlement a percentage of a future transfer, while a BBC Sport report from 2025 described Coventry as due 10% of Sporting’s profit above its purchase price. A percentage of profit above the purchase price is not the same calculation as a percentage of the full resale fee. These descriptions should not be combined into a single definitive formula without the operative contract terms.
The distinction matters to the reported value, but it does not resolve the central question: whether Coventry still held any entitlement after the claimed summer 2024 sell-back. No reliable figure for a payment Coventry may have received in exchange was stated in GOAL’s account.

How does Gyökeres’s Arsenal move affect the story?
The June 2025 reports discussed a possible departure from Sporting, but that transfer speculation is now historical. BBC Sport reported in July 2025 that Arsenal confirmed Gyökeres’s signing from Sporting: BBC Sport’s report on the move. That subsequent transfer does not, by itself, prove whether Coventry retained a sell-on right or what amount—if any—it received.
The clause issue is separate from Sporting’s public negotiating position. During the 2025 speculation, Sporting president Frederico Varandas denied agreeing to a fixed €60 million plus €10 million exit and said no offer had arrived at that point. BBC Sport also reported Gyökeres had a €100 million release clause. Those figures concern Sporting’s position and the player’s release clause, not Coventry’s entitlement. Varandas was quoted by BBC Sport as saying: “I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60m euros plus 10m euros because I never promised that.”

What can be stated with confidence?
- Coventry sold Gyökeres to Sporting in 2023; the exact original terms are described in detail by a supporter blog summarizing Sporting’s filing, while BBC reported a fee close to £20 million.
- GOAL and the Coventry Observer published conflicting accounts in June 2025 about whether Coventry’s later sell-on right had been sold or was still active.
- The cited reports do not establish the later clause status through public documentation, and the subsequent Arsenal transfer does not settle that contractual question.
