Use it to tell the people you want to reach what you do, who you help, or what professional direction you’re pursuing. It can differ from your current job title, and LinkedIn says it may appear in search results.
What should you put in your LinkedIn headline?
Choose a truthful professional focus and make it specific enough that a reader can understand your value quickly. A useful writing aid—not an official LinkedIn formula or a promise of better search performance—is:
Role or professional identity + specialty or audience + evidence or outcome
You do not need to force all three parts into every headline. A clear role alone can work; add a specialty, audience, or outcome when it helps explain what you offer. Keep every claim accurate and use the About or Experience sections for details that need more room.

Examples to adapt
- Product designer: Product designer | Turning complex workflows into clear, accessible experiences
- Early-career analyst: Early-career data analyst | SQL and dashboarding | Translating operational data into decisions
- Independent professional: Independent tax adviser | Helping small businesses plan and file with confidence
- Job seeker: Open to work: customer success roles | SaaS onboarding and account growth
- Retired professional: Retired educator | Literacy volunteer and mentor
These are illustrative patterns, not real-member endorsements or guaranteed search results. LinkedIn says a headline can highlight expertise or personality, and it permits members to identify statuses such as unemployed or retired. How do you write a good LinkedIn headline?
- Decide who you want to reach. Consider whether the reader is a recruiter, potential client, colleague, or professional community.
- Name your real focus. Use your role, field, target role, or current professional status—not a title or credential you do not have.
- Add a useful distinction. Include a relevant specialty, audience, skill, or outcome if it makes your focus clearer.
- Use relevant terms naturally. LinkedIn’s profile-search guidance recommends multiple relevant keywords rather than repeating the same words or phrases. Avoid keyword piles and unsupported superlatives.
- Check it in context. Make sure the wording reads clearly as a short line beneath your name and remains accurate alongside your Experience and Education details.
LinkedIn’s guidance supports using accurate, relevant wording, but the reviewed sources do not establish that a particular headline formula or keyword placement causes more views or improves search ranking. They also do not establish a current character limit for a personal profile headline.

How do you edit your LinkedIn headline?
LinkedIn documents editing the headline separately from the current-position title. The exact interface may change, but its help page gives these paths:
- Desktop: On the LinkedIn homepage, select Me, then View Profile. Select the edit icon in the introduction section, change the Headline field, and save.
- Mobile: Open your profile, tap the introduction edit control, change the headline, and save.
LinkedIn notes that when the headline and current position are the same, the current position is not displayed in the top section. Editing the headline does not change the Current, Previous, or Education lines displayed there. For accessibility instructions, see LinkedIn Help: Edit your profile intro with screen reader support.

Can LinkedIn help write your headline?
LinkedIn documents a headline writing assistant for a select group of Premium subscribers; availability is not stated as universal for all Premium members. If the feature appears for you, LinkedIn says you can review and edit a suggestion before saving, or skip it or request another.
