Coventry City’s reported transfer-fee sequence for Gustavo “Gus” Hamer looks favorable: a €4.5 million purchase from Dutch club PEC Zwolle in 2020, a €17.3 million sale to Sheffield United in 2023, and a reported €7 million return in 2026. But Coventry did not disclose the return fee, and the figures come from a secondary transfer database. They suggest astute business; they do not prove the club’s net profit.
What the reported transfer fees show
FootballTransfers’ history page, updated 1 October 2026, lists the fees below. They are database-reported amounts, not disclosed contract terms or audited accounts.
| Move | Reported fee | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| PEC Zwolle to Coventry City, 2020 | €4.5 million | FootballTransfers lists this amount; no primary transfer document confirming it is cited here. |
| Coventry City to Sheffield United, 2023 | €17.3 million | FootballTransfers lists this amount. The Premier League confirmed the signing and a four-year contract, but did not state a fee. |
| Sheffield United to Coventry City, 2026 | €7 million | FootballTransfers lists this amount. BBC reported the return on a long-term deal on 11 August 2026 and said Coventry had not disclosed the fee. |
The figures imply a €12.8 million difference between the reported 2020 purchase and 2023 sale, before considering any costs or contract terms. The reported 2026 return fee is below the reported 2023 sale price. Those comparisons indicate a potentially favorable sequence of gross fees, not money Coventry necessarily retained.
Why the fee sequence is not Coventry’s net profit
A transfer fee comparison leaves out the financial details needed to calculate a club’s actual return. The sources cited here do not establish add-ons, sell-on clauses, wages, amortisation, or other accounting costs. Nor does the reported €7 million return fee establish what Coventry ultimately paid under the deal.

- Made for Cityzens – Features the Manchester City club crest with signature PUMA branding.
- Stay Cool & Comfortable – dryCELL moisture-wicking technology with breathable mesh panels helps keep you dry on and off the pitch.
- Iconic 2026/27 Design – Full sky blue gradient with a metallic monochrome crest creates a bold, modern Manchester City look.

For that reason, “struck transfer gold” is a reasonable description of how the reported prices compare, but a specific profit figure would go beyond the available evidence. Coventry’s accounts and the full terms of the transfers would be needed for a net calculation.
What Hamer contributed on the pitch
His first Coventry spell
BBC Sport reported that Hamer made 132 appearances and scored 19 goals for Coventry before his 2023 move. The Premier League’s account of that transfer reported the same totals. Hamer had joined Coventry from PEC Zwolle in 2020 and became a regular contributor during his first spell.

His time at Sheffield United
BBC reported that Hamer recorded 22 goals and 29 assists in 123 matches for Sheffield United. The Premier League reported in August 2023 that he joined the club aged 26 on a four-year contract, after playing for Coventry across three seasons.
Hamer described the appeal of the 2023 move in the Premier League’s 12 August report: “I still can’t believe it, playing in the Premier League is every little boy’s dream and I’m going to be doing it with Sheffield United, a massive club.” That explains his stated ambition; it is not evidence about the clubs’ financial calculations.

What is known about his 2026 return and future value
BBC reported on 11 August 2026 that Hamer had rejoined Coventry on a long-term deal, with the fee undisclosed by the club. BBC quoted him saying: “To go to the Premier League with Coventry was something I always dreamt of so when the club came back in for me, it was very special so I’m very happy.” He also said: “The love I got from the fans was amazing so the only thing I can give back to them is goals, assists and a good performance so that’s what I will try to do.”
FootballTransfers estimated Hamer’s value at €11.5 million, with a stated range of €10.4 million to €12.7 million, on 1 October 2026. That is the site’s model estimate, not a confirmed market price, transfer fee, or guarantee of what Coventry could receive in a future sale. It cannot show whether the return will prove financially profitable.
