Corn and soybean prices faced different pressures as U.S. harvest movement encouraged grain sales: corn was weighed down by larger reported stocks and harvest progress, while soybeans surrendered most of an early, currency-driven gain. Argentina’s weather is a forward-looking factor, but current signals are mixed by region and do not guarantee rainfall or crop damage.
Why did the corn and soybean rallies stall?
U.S. harvest activity can bring more grain to market as producers move crops and sell some of their supply. That nearby pressure helped cap both markets, but corn and soybeans had distinct additional influences. The figures below are snapshots from October 2026 market reports, not live prices or a current trading signal.
Corn: stocks and harvest weighed on prices
An October 6 Grain Central/Lachstock Consulting market update said corn was consolidating just below $5 after falling 4.9% over the prior week. It pointed to harvest progress, yield questions and a larger-than-expected stocks figure as important pressures. The report put U.S. corn harvest progress at 23%, compared with 25% expected and four percentage points behind the average; those are figures reported by the market wire, not independently verified here against a USDA dashboard. Grain Central/Lachstock Consulting, October 6, 2026
Price Group’s October 5 commentary reported September 1 U.S. corn stocks of 2.095 billion bushels, which it said was 173 million bushels above the WASDE estimate for 2025/26 U.S. corn ending stocks. The stocks figure is attributed here to Price Group’s account of USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service data; it is not presented as an independently checked figure from the original NASS release. Soybeans: harvest selling offset an early boost
The October 6 market wire said soybeans initially gained 19 cents after a sharp move in the Brazilian real, but harvest-related selling erased most of the rise. Soybeans ended the session up 2.5 cents, according to that report. It also cited a 31% year-over-year increase in inspections pace and a sale of 104,000 tonnes to unknown destinations; both are dated figures from the same market update, not continuing trends. Grain Central/Lachstock Consulting, October 6, 2026
Products from the soybean crush did not move together: the report described meal as weaker and oil as stronger. That split is a reminder that soybean prices can respond to several forces at once, including currency movements, exports, processing demand and the supply entering the market at harvest.

What are Argentina’s spot prices—and how do they differ from futures?
On October 6, 2026, the Bolsa de Comercio de Rosario listed spot reference prices of ARS 560,000 per tonne for soybeans and ARS 294,000 per tonne for corn. The exchange says these reference prices are weighted averages of reported spot trades. They are local physical-market benchmarks in Argentine pesos, not Chicago futures quotes, and should not be compared as if they were prices for the same market or contract. Bolsa de Comercio de Rosario, October 6, 2026
A separate U.S. farm-market update published October 2 placed November 2026 soybean futures near $12.77 per bushel and December corn futures below $5 per bushel. Those were dated futures snapshots from that publication date—not current quotes or Argentine cash prices. The update also cited U.S. harvest activity and producer selling as nearby pressures, with South American planting weather and export demand among the factors to watch. What does the Argentina weather outlook say?
The October 5–12 weekly precipitation anomaly summary described a patchwork rather than a uniform wet or dry forecast. Revista Chacra’s account of ECMWF maps indicated below-reference precipitation in parts of Santiago del Estero, Córdoba and western Santa Fe, alongside above-reference signals across much of northern and northeastern Argentina and parts of the west. The maps show a weekly tendency relative to a reference, not day-by-day rainfall; a positive anomaly does not specify how intense any rainfall event will be. Revista Chacra, October 5–12, 2026 forecast summary
Observed rainfall also did not follow a single nationwide El Niño pattern. An October 7 Infocampo report, drawing on Argentina’s Oficina de Riesgo Agropecuario and the Rosario exchange’s agricultural guide, said rainfall in parts of the NEA and Litoral broadly matched the expected pattern in July–September, while central and southern Pampas rainfall was slightly below normal. The report pointed to local circulation as one reason regional outcomes can differ and said the strength of El Niño’s impact in Argentina remained uncertain. Infocampo, October 7, 2026

What the market and weather signals can—and cannot—tell you
- Near-term U.S. supply: Harvest progress and producer selling can add pressure as grain reaches the market; the corn stocks figure was an additional bearish factor cited in October 5–6 commentary.
- Soybean influences differ: The October 6 report described currency support, export activity, divergent meal and oil moves, and harvest selling. A rally can fade when those forces pull in different directions.
- Argentina is a regional risk, not a single forecast: Weekly anomaly maps and broad El Niño expectations do not establish rainfall at a particular farm or prove a crop impact.
- Market numbers age quickly: Futures, cash benchmarks, harvest progress, export figures and forecasts can change. The cited prices and market statistics refer to their stated October 2026 publication dates.
