Aura leads our 2026 comparison, with LifeLock, IDShield, Identity Guard, Experian IdentityWorks and IdentityForce offering different balances of price, monitoring and recovery support.

Aura is the best overall identity theft protection service for most people in 2026, combining three-bureau credit monitoring, identity monitoring, data removal, antivirus, a VPN and recovery support. LifeLock is the strongest alternative for buyers who prioritize a long-established recovery service and broad plan choices, while IDShield is a good lower-cost option if you mainly want monitoring and restoration assistance.

These services do not prevent every form of identity theft. They watch selected credit files, records and illicit websites, then alert you when they find something. A free credit freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion remains the most important no-cost step.

Best identity theft protection services at a glance

Service Best for Starting price Credit monitoring Main drawback
Aura Best overall $15/month or $144/year Three bureaus Its credit lock applies to Experian, not all three bureaus; Aura also disclosed a 2026 incident
LifeLock Recovery support and plan choice $12.49/month or $124.99/year for Core Two bureaus on Core; three on Advanced and Total Higher tiers become expensive, and advertised limits are divided by benefit category
IDShield Budget-conscious households $14.95/month for one bureau; $19.95 for three One or three bureaus One-bureau coverage is a meaningful limitation
Identity Guard Low introductory pricing $7.50/month promotional price for Value Depends on tier Renewal prices can be substantially higher
Experian IdentityWorks Experian-focused credit monitoring $24.99/month after seven-day trial Experian-centered Requires a card for the trial and has no dedicated mobile apps
IdentityForce Financial and investment monitoring About $19.90/month for UltraSecure+Credit Three bureaus on the higher-priced plan Reported mobile-app performance issues

Prices and plan terms can change. Annual-equivalent prices, first-year promotions and renewal prices are not interchangeable, so check the checkout screen before subscribing.

1. Aura — best overall

Aura is the most complete package in this comparison. Its feature set includes three-bureau credit monitoring, dark-web monitoring, data removal, antivirus, a VPN, parental controls and 24/7 support. That makes it better suited to households that want privacy and device-security tools alongside identity alerts.

Veltec ID Protector Ink Roller - Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp Set (Blue, Stamp+3 Refills)
  • SHIELD YOUR PRIVACY WITH THE ID DEFENDER ROLLER STAMP: Tired of worrying about your personal information falling into the wrong hands? The ID Defender Roller Stamp offers a simple yet effective solution. With a unique wide camouflage pattern, it quickly and easily conceals sensitive data on a variety of surfaces.
  • PRIVACY PROTECTION: useful not only as an ADDRESS BLOCKER or ID POLICE, but also keeps away preying eyes from invoices, authority documents, checks, bank statements and many more.
  • SIMPLE TO USE: Just remove the cover and swipe. The wide swipe makes it easy to cover sensitive information.
  • VERSATILE APPLICATION: Ideal for a variety of documents, including contracts, court documents, shipping labels, tax returns and more.
  • LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.

Individual pricing is $15 per month or $144 per year. Couple plans cost $29 per month or $264 per year, and family plans cost $50 per month or $384 per year. Aura advertises up to $1 million in identity-theft insurance per adult.

Do not confuse Aura’s credit-lock feature with a complete credit freeze. The lock is for Experian, whereas a full freeze requires separate action with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

Aura’s 2026 security incident

Aura disclosed that an attacker obtained access to an employee account in March 2026 through a targeted phone-phishing attack. Aura said about 900,000 records were accessed, mostly names and email addresses in a marketing tool connected to a company it acquired in 2021. It said fewer than 20,000 active customers and fewer than 15,000 former customers appeared in the accessed contact information.

Aura also said its identity-protection application database was not accessed and that Social Security numbers, financial information, credit records, passwords, payment details and credentials were not compromised. Those are Aura’s stated findings, not an independently verified conclusion. This incident is worth considering if the provider’s own security history is important to your choice.

2. LifeLock — best for recovery support

LifeLock remains a strong choice for buyers who want a recognizable identity-monitoring brand with several coverage levels. Tom’s Guide named it its overall Editor’s Choice after testing interfaces, alerts, features and customer support with reviewers’ personal data.

Nezyo 2 Pack Identity Protection Roller Stamp 4 Pack Refill Ink,Yellow
  • Protect Your Privacy Effectively: you can use this identity protection roller stamp to flip personal information in under 2 seconds and save time and effort, effectively hiding and protecting your personal information, such as phone numbers, social security numbers, bank statements, shipping addresses, tax documents, data, billing addresses and many more
  • Ideal Replacement for Shredder: if you are still using a shredder to shred cards or papers that are printed with your personal information, this security stamper roller will be an alternative tool to block out your privacy effectively and easily
  • Refillable and Long Term Use: this confidential stamp can cover a total length of up to 100 meter/ 109 yards, approximately 3,200 prints are covered, pattern width is about 0.78 inches; When ink runs out, you can refill the security stamp with ink
  • Easy to Use: just continuous roll the address blocker roller stamp to conceal information, and roll on a second layer for maximum protection, works on paper, envelopes, folders, address labels, etc., please note that may not work on smooth surfaces
  • How to Refill the Ink: there are 4 pieces of ID stamp refills, each is about 1.5 ml, you just need to unscrew the cap of the ink bottle (not disposable, you can close the cap for next time of use), then insert it into the hole on the side of the stamp, then turn it upside down, about 5 minutes later, the most of the ink will be replenished to the security roller stamp
Plan Listed price Key coverage
Core $12.49/month or $124.99/year Two-bureau monitoring; up to $25,000 for stolen funds and personal expenses, plus up to $1 million for legal expenses
Advanced $19.99/month or $199.99/year Three-bureau monitoring, higher reimbursement limits and scam reimbursement
Total $34.99/month or $349.99/year Broader financial and investment monitoring; up to $1 million each for stolen funds, personal expenses and legal expenses; up to $10,000 in scam reimbursement

The Core plan is relatively affordable, but two-bureau monitoring may not be enough if you want the broadest credit coverage. LifeLock’s “up to $3 million” figure on Total is not one unrestricted payment: stolen funds, personal expenses and legal expenses have separate limits, and claims remain subject to policy terms, exclusions and definitions.

3. IDShield — best budget-friendly option

IDShield keeps the choice relatively simple. Individual and family plans have the same general feature set; the major decision is whether to monitor one credit bureau or all three.

  • Individual: from $14.95 per month for one bureau or $19.95 for three.
  • Family: from $29.95 per month for one bureau or $34.95 for three.

Family coverage includes the member, a spouse or domestic partner, and dependents under 18 living in the household. IDShield is appealing when you want identity monitoring and restoration help without paying for a large bundle of security software. If you choose it, the three-bureau version is usually the more sensible comparison: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion can each receive different information.

4. Identity Guard — cheapest introductory price, with a renewal warning

Identity Guard is worth considering when the first-year price is your main concern. Security.org places it among its top three services, behind Aura and LifeLock, but its displayed promotional prices require careful reading.

Plan Promotional price Renewal price
Value individual $7.50/month $8.99/month
Total individual $16.67/month $19.99/month
Ultra individual $19.99/month annual-equivalent $39.99/month
Value family $4.49/month annual-equivalent $8.99/month per month-equivalent
Total family $9.99/month annual-equivalent $19.99/month per month-equivalent

The Ultra plan’s promotional-to-renewal jump is particularly large. Set a calendar reminder before the first term ends, or compare the renewal cost with Aura, LifeLock and IDShield before allowing the subscription to continue.

5. Experian IdentityWorks — best if Experian is your priority

Experian IdentityWorks makes the most sense for someone who specifically wants Experian-based credit monitoring and fraud-resolution support. It is less compelling as a complete, multi-bureau identity-protection package.

IdentityWorks Premium costs $24.99 per month after a free seven-day trial. A credit card is required for the trial, and the subscription continues billing unless you cancel within seven days. Independent testing also notes that IdentityWorks does not have dedicated mobile apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before signing up, decide whether Experian-only monitoring meets your needs. It does not provide the same view as monitoring Equifax, Experian and TransUnion together.

6. IdentityForce — best for higher-end financial monitoring

IdentityForce’s UltraSecure+Credit plan is the one to examine if you want three-bureau credit monitoring, credit-freeze support and investment-account alerts. TechRadar lists it at about $19.90 per month and rates its higher-priced plan particularly well for financial monitoring.

The tradeoff is usability: testing reported that the iOS and Android apps could load slowly or display pages incorrectly. That may matter if you expect to review alerts primarily from a phone.

What identity theft protection actually monitors

Credit monitoring can alert you to new accounts, hard inquiries, late payments, credit-limit changes, public-record changes or address changes. It generally will not tell you that someone has withdrawn money from an existing bank account or filed a tax return using your Social Security number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identity monitoring can add address-change requests, court records, utility accounts, payday-loan applications, social-media information and selected illicit-marketplace data. Coverage varies by provider, and monitoring does not necessarily detect tax, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, Social Security or unemployment-benefit fraud.

“Dark-web monitoring” is also narrower than it sounds. A service checks particular databases, illicit websites and other sources. It cannot search every private site or guarantee that every stolen credential will be found.

Credit monitoring, a lock and a freeze are different

Tool What it does Cost and scope
Credit monitoring Alerts you to selected changes or inquiries on a credit file Often included with a paid service; coverage may be one, two or three bureaus
Credit lock Lets you restrict access under a credit bureau’s product terms Terms vary; it may apply to one bureau and is not the same as a statutory freeze
Credit freeze Restricts access to your credit file until you lift it Free, does not affect your score, and must be placed with all three bureaus for complete coverage

A paid service can make alerts and recovery easier, but it does not replace freezing your files. You can freeze credit for free with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

How we evaluated the services

The strongest available hands-on testing used reviewers’ own personal data, then examined setup, interfaces, alert delivery, customer support, account linking and individual features. Security.org’s Aura testing included scanning for personal information, testing credit locks, linking financial accounts and attempting a loan application while a lock was active.

Those observations are different from provider claims about the number of records scanned, “real-time” alerts or insurance limits. No responsible test should publish a real Social Security number, attempt criminal identity fraud or create fraudulent credit applications. The services should therefore be judged mainly as detection and recovery tools—not guaranteed prevention systems.

Free alternatives and steps to take first

  1. Freeze all three credit files. A freeze is free and remains until you lift it.
  2. Check your reports. Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the authorized free-report site. Weekly access is currently available.
  3. Place a fraud alert if appropriate. An initial alert lasts one year and can be placed with any one bureau, which must notify the other two. An extended alert lasts seven years for eligible identity-theft victims with an FTC Identity Theft Report.
  4. Use IdentityTheft.gov if theft has occurred. Its current options include “Report Identity Theft,” “Deal With a Data Breach” and “Browse Recovery Steps.” Creating an account helps track the recovery plan and pre-fill forms; without an account, print or save the report and plan immediately.
  5. Buy a paid service for convenience. Choose one if you value centralized alerts, restoration assistance, data-removal tools, device security or insurance enough to justify the recurring fee.

How to choose the right plan

  • Choose Aura for the broadest bundle and three-bureau monitoring.
  • Choose LifeLock if recovery support, scam reimbursement and tiered insurance are your priorities.
  • Choose IDShield if you want a simpler budget option, preferably with three-bureau monitoring.
  • Choose Identity Guard only after comparing the renewal price, not just the promotion.
  • Choose Experian IdentityWorks when Experian-specific monitoring is the main requirement.
  • Choose IdentityForce for investment alerts and financial monitoring, provided its mobile-app limitations do not bother you.

FAQ

What is the best identity theft protection service in 2026?

Aura is the best overall pick in the current editorial testing because it combines three-bureau credit monitoring with identity monitoring, data removal, device-security tools and support. LifeLock is a strong alternative for recovery support and broader plan choices.

Is paid identity theft protection worth it?

It can be worthwhile for centralized alerts, restoration assistance, data-removal features and bundled security tools. It is not essential for everyone: a free three-bureau credit freeze, fraud alerts when appropriate and regular checks at AnnualCreditReport.com provide important protection.

Does identity theft protection prevent identity theft?

Usually not. These services mainly monitor selected sources, alert you to possible misuse and help with recovery. They cannot guarantee detection of every type of fraud, including unauthorized bank withdrawals or some tax and government-benefit fraud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a credit lock the same as a credit freeze?

No. A credit freeze is free, legally defined and placed with each of the three nationwide bureaus. A credit lock is a bureau-specific product governed by service terms and may not restrict all three credit files.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Aura is the strongest all-around paid service, but its 2026 security incident and Experian-only credit lock deserve consideration. LifeLock is better for shoppers focused on recovery and reimbursement tiers; IDShield offers a cleaner budget comparison. Whichever service you choose, freeze Equifax, Experian and TransUnion first when you do not need new credit, and compare the full renewal price before starting a subscription.
