The order was against that acquisition vehicle, not Sheffield United Football Club. The case follows former owner United World’s claim that £35 million remains unpaid; the amount is disputed in the sense that the sources cited here do not establish it as an adjudicated debt.
What happened in the Sheffield United takeover dispute?
In August 2026, the High Court made a winding-up order against COH Sports Bidco after former owner United World pursued a petition over what it says is an unpaid balance from the sale. Reuters, reporting via KELO-AM on 19 August, said Sheffield United responded that the decision was not an issue for the football club and did not affect its normal day-to-day operations. The distinction between the company and the club matters: the order named COH Sports Bidco, not Sheffield United Football Club. The available reports do not say that the club itself was wound up.
Is Sheffield United’s former owner owed £35 million?
United World says £35 million remains unpaid from the sale. Sky Sports reported the claim ahead of the winding-up hearing on 17 August 2026. That figure should be treated as the former owner’s allegation, not as a court-confirmed balance: the cited reporting does not establish a judgment finding that the sum is owed. Sky Sports report

What did Sheffield United say about the court order?
As reported on 19 August 2026, the club said the court decision did not affect its normal daily operations. This is the club’s response to the order; it does not resolve the underlying payment claim or determine whether the EFL will take further action.
What is the EFL doing?
The EFL said it had requested observations from relevant parties under its regulations and could not comment further while its process was ongoing. The Guardian reported that position on 8 July 2026. The sources cited here do not establish a final EFL finding, points deduction or other sporting sanction. The Guardian’s report on the EFL process

United World warned of possible consequences if the matter was not resolved, but possible consequences are not the same as a decision. The Independent reported on 19 August 2026 on the court outcome and potential regulatory implications; any deduction or disqualification should not be presented as imposed unless the EFL announces one. A club board update in June 2026 identified Delaware-based 1919 Partners LLC as the club’s parent company. The current owners described restructuring as intended to support investment and long-term sustainability; that is their stated rationale, not an independently established outcome. The Guardian also quoted a 1919 Partners spokesperson saying: “We are focused on winning football matches, not playing politics.”

What supporters and creditors should watch next
- Any court or company update: further filings or announcements may clarify the consequences of the order for COH Sports Bidco.
- The payment claim: United World’s stated £35 million claim remains distinct from a court finding that the sum is due.
- The EFL process: the league’s request for observations is not itself a sanction; a formal decision would need to be announced separately.
- Club operations: the club’s reported statement concerns day-to-day operations, not the eventual legal or regulatory outcome.
