What did PolitiFact verify about the Cosmo Heater?
In a fact check published January 3, 2024, PolitiFact examined social posts claiming Elon Musk developed a Cosmo Heater using NASA technology and that it could reduce heating costs to “basically $0.” It found no reports or statements supporting Musk’s involvement, no link between Musk and the product, and no substantiation for the NASA-engineer story. PolitiFact also reported that an image of Musk holding the heater had been altered from a Reuters photo. That finding addresses the endorsement and origin claims reviewed in that article. It is not a product test of every heater currently advertised as a Cosmo Heater, nor does it establish what a particular unit can heat or how much electricity it uses. The “basically $0” savings claim is an advertising claim, not a verified measurement in the available reporting.
Is Cosmo Heater a scam?
The available records do not support a blanket conclusion that every product marketed as a Cosmo Heater is fraudulent, defective, or unsafe. They do support treating celebrity and NASA-origin claims as unsubstantiated and verifying the exact seller and model before paying. What the BBB profile does—and does not—show
The Better Business Bureau profile for Cosmo Heaters lists an appliance sales business at a San Leandro, California address, gives it a C rating, and says it is not BBB Accredited. BBB gives the rating reasons as failure to respond to one complaint and length of time in business. It also says it does not guarantee profile information’s accuracy and does not endorse businesses. The profile is limited directory and complaint-handling context; the available information does not verify that this business sells or makes the heater promoted in the Cosmo Heater ads. How to interpret a separate Cyber heater complaint
A BBB Scam Tracker entry dated January 31, 2025, records one consumer’s report that a “Cyber heater” barely warmed a room and that the consumer was dissatisfied with a partial refund. BBB says Scam Tracker content is based on victim and potential-victim accounts. The report is an individual account, not an independently established product-performance finding, and it does not establish that the Cyber heater and Cosmo Heater are the same product. Can the heater really cut your heating bill to zero?
No verified product-specific energy-savings or performance data for a Cosmo Heater is established here. PolitiFact reported the “basically $0” savings claim as part of the social posts it reviewed; it did not validate it as a measured result. Do not treat that claim—or a related advertised percentage reduction—as a guarantee of what you will pay.
Before relying on a heater’s savings pitch, look for a clearly identified manufacturer and model, stated heating capacity and intended room use, and enough information to estimate electricity use. Compare the seller’s terms and the unit’s stated specifications with your actual heating needs. Without an identifiable model and substantiated performance information, a precise savings estimate is not possible.

What should you check before buying a portable electric heater?
The CPSC staff’s February 2024 assessment of portable electric heater listings and products described inadequate hazard disclosures, unsafe marketing depictions, and possible counterfeit certification markings among the material it reviewed. Staff reviewed 10 heater manuals or instructions for the assessment; that is a sample size, not a failure rate and not a finding about a specific Cosmo Heater. The assessment is not a Cosmo Heater recall notice or a ranking of brands. It explains why buyers should check the exact unit’s safety information rather than rely on an advertisement. - Confirm the product’s identity. Find the manufacturer, exact model number, and seller. If those details are missing or inconsistent across the listing, packaging, and instructions, you cannot reliably verify that the advertised claims or safety information apply to the unit.
- Look for safety instructions before purchase. Check that warnings are visible on the product page and that the product comes with complete instructions. CPSC staff wrote in February 2024: “Currently, there is no standard related to online safety information for portable electric heaters.” Do not assume an online listing will show every warning supplied with a product.
- Verify any certification claim. A certification logo in an advertisement is not, by itself, proof that the exact model is certified. Check the claimed certification against the certifier’s records where possible. Certification alone does not prove every product claim or guarantee every safety outcome.
- Read the return, warranty, and seller terms. Confirm who handles returns and warranty service, the applicable deadline, and whether any conditions or costs apply. Save the listing and terms as they appeared when you ordered.
- Ignore celebrity endorsements as a substitute for product evidence. A famous person’s image or a NASA reference does not establish who made a heater, whether it is certified, or how it performs.
How should you use a portable heater safely?
For the covered movable or wall-hung heaters, the CPSC assessment reproduces UL 1278 warning language directing users to keep cords, drapery, and furnishings at least 3 feet (0.9 m) from the front of the heater and away from its sides and rear. Follow the warnings and instructions for the exact unit you own; do not assume that an unidentified product has the same design or instructions as another heater.

What is the practical buying decision?
If you are considering a listing promoted as the Cosmo Heater, do not buy on the strength of the Musk endorsement, NASA origin story, or dramatic bill-savings claim: the endorsement and origin claims were not substantiated in PolitiFact’s January 2024 review. Proceed only if you can identify the manufacturer, exact model, seller, applicable safety information, verifiable certification claim, and clear purchase terms. If those basics cannot be confirmed, choose a traceable portable electric space heater with accessible safety instructions instead. No particular alternative model has been verified here.
