But there is no universal price or reliable one-size-fits-all break-even point: the decision depends on a written local quote, your likely ongoing eyewear costs, the vision you can realistically expect, and the procedure’s risks.
How much does laser eye surgery cost?
There is no single authoritative price for laser eye surgery in the sources cited here. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says it does not regulate LASIK marketing or fees, so its patient materials do not establish a current market price or compare clinics. Ask providers in your area for written, itemized quotes rather than treating an advertised price as a typical total.
“Laser eye surgery” can refer to different refractive procedures. The FDA information discussed here is specifically about LASIK; it should not be assumed to describe every form of laser vision correction or lens surgery.
What should an all-in quote include?
The UK Royal College of Ophthalmologists advises clinics to make the total cost clear from the outset. Its patient guidance says the total normally includes follow-up visits and treatment for surgery-related problems, and that additional laser treatment to fine-tune vision is normally included for up to two years. Later natural prescription changes and treatment for unrelated eye-health problems may cost extra. Those are the College’s UK guidance statements, not a guarantee of what any particular clinic includes; check the written terms for your provider.

Will insurance cover it?
Coverage depends on where you live and on your plan. FDA patient guidance says most U.S. medical insurance does not pay for refractive surgery, but that is not a determination of an individual policy’s benefits. In the UK, the Royal College says elective surgery to correct the need for glasses or contact lenses is not an NHS procedure and is not covered by private health insurance schemes. Do not apply either statement to another country; check with your insurer or relevant health service.

How to decide whether the expense is worth it
Compare the cost with the value you place on less dependence on corrective lenses—not with a promised financial return. The official sources reviewed do not provide a representative price series or an evidence-based break-even calculation against glasses and contact lenses. A useful personal estimate requires your written quote, current eyewear and lens spending, replacement frequency, expected future prescription needs, the clinic’s follow-up terms, and a time horizon you choose.
Even if surgery reduces your eyewear spending, it may not eliminate it. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) says some patients may still need glasses for activities such as reading or night driving. Age-related changes to near vision can mean reading glasses remain necessary or become necessary later. The FDA also notes that results for some farsighted patients may diminish with age.

LASIK reshapes the cornea to change its focusing power. Its aim is to reduce dependence on glasses or contacts, not to guarantee perfect unaided vision for every activity or for life. Consider whether the expected result would meaningfully improve your work, driving, hobbies, or daily routine, while accounting for the possibility that you will still use corrective lenses.
First determine whether you are a suitable candidate
Only a clinical examination can assess whether the procedure is appropriate for your eyes. AAO guidance identifies considerations including adult age, a stable prescription, adequate corneal thickness and health, generally good eye health, and realistic expectations. Factors that may make someone unsuitable include an unstable prescription, extreme refractive error, severe dry eye, thin or diseased corneas, keratoconus, some cases of glaucoma or cataract, and poorly controlled diabetes. FDA guidance also flags factors that can affect healing or prescription stability.

The FDA lists possible undercorrection or overcorrection, continued need for glasses or contacts, dry eye that can be severe or permanent, glare, halos or double vision that may affect night vision, and loss of vision that cannot be corrected. The AAO also describes temporary or persistent dry-eye and visual symptoms, along with rare serious complications. The FDA cautions against claims such as “20/20 or your money back”; medicine cannot guarantee a particular result.
Compare clinics on more than the headline price
The FDA advises patients not to choose by cost alone, to compare doctors, procedures, and devices, and to read the manufacturer’s patient handbook. It also recommends caution around package deals and guarantees. Use a consultation to get clear answers to these questions:
- Clinical findings: What did the exam show about prescription stability, corneal health and thickness, dry eye, and other conditions?
- Procedure and device: Why is the recommended procedure appropriate for your eyes, and is the laser approved for the intended indication? The FDA does not identify one laser as universally best.
- Surgeon and care: How experienced is the surgeon with this procedure and laser? Who handles postoperative care, and how are complications managed?
- Total price and terms: What is the written total for both eyes? Which tests, medication, visits, complication care, and enhancement treatment are included, and for how long?
- Expected everyday vision: Might you still need glasses for reading, night driving, or other activities? How does the expected result fit your work, driving, hobbies, and contact sports?
- Risks and recovery: Which risks are most relevant to you, what symptoms should you expect, how much recovery time should you plan for, and when should you seek care?
Plan for aftercare
Follow your surgical team’s instructions and attend the recommended follow-up visits. The NHS advises patients to use lubricating eye drops when directed to help keep the eye healthy and ease discomfort. Ask your care team what to use and how; drops are not a substitute for follow-up or medical advice.
