If you are trying to find out whether your Social Security number was exposed in the National Public Data breach, start with the limitation: there is no official government database that will confirm it. The currently available NPD-specific checker is a private Pentester tool, and its result is only an indication—not proof.
Regardless of the result, an exposed SSN should prompt practical protection steps: freeze your credit reports, review for unfamiliar activity, secure your Social Security account and request an IRS Identity Protection PIN.
What happened in the National Public Data breach?
National Public Data, a data-broker operation associated with Jerico Pictures, Inc., acknowledged attempted unauthorized access beginning in late December 2023. Reports described possible data leaks in April 2024 and summer 2024.
The information reportedly included Social Security numbers, names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and dates of birth. News coverage and other reports referred to nearly 3 billion records—or, inconsistently, nearly 3 billion people. The House Oversight Committee cautioned that those figures should not be treated as a confirmed count of affected individuals.
#1 Best Overall
The current nationalpublicdata.com website says it is operated by a different party. It states that it is not affiliated with the former Jerico Pictures operation, has no connection to the 2024 breach and cannot access the old breach database. Its people-search or opt-out pages therefore cannot prove whether your SSN was exposed.
How to check for a possible match
As of August 9, 2026, the available public NPD-specific checker is Pentester’s NPD Breach Check:
The page asks for:
- Email address
- First name
- Last name
- Birth year
After you select Search, the tool says it checks whether information such as an SSN and date of birth may appear in the NPD breach data. It does not ask you to enter your complete Social Security number.
Before submitting your information
Pentester is a private company. You must provide an email address, first name, last name and birth year to use the checker. Its terms say the site is provided “as is” and do not guarantee that its information is accurate or complete.
If you do not want to send those details to a third-party service, you can skip the search. The protective measures below are worthwhile even without a match.

- WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 1-inch masking pattern hides up to 6 lines in one pass.
- HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Wide Advanced Roller delivers up to 1,600 impressions. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life, so it is ready whenever the mail arrives.
- DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
- IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
- SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Green roller.
How to understand the result
| Result or warning | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Match | Information associated with you appears in the checker’s dataset. | Assume your personal information may be at risk and put protections in place. A match does not prove every field is accurate or that anyone has used your data. |
| No match | The checker did not find a matching record in the data it uses. | Do not treat this as proof that your SSN was absent. The dataset may be incomplete, or your records may differ because of an old email address, misspelling or incorrect birth year. |
| Incorrect address, phone number or date of birth | Data-broker records can be stale, duplicated or incorrectly linked. | Review the result carefully. An incorrect field does not automatically make the entire result genuine or fraudulent. |
| “Dark web” or “National Public Data” monitoring alert | The alert may have been generated by a private monitoring company, not by NPD or a government agency. | Sign in through the provider’s official website or app. Do not use links in an unexpected email or text. |
What will not confirm whether your SSN was exposed
The Social Security Administration
The SSA does not offer a lookup tool that tells consumers whether their SSN appeared in the NPD breach. You can still use a personal my Social Security account to check your earnings record and look for suspicious activity.
The current National Public Data website
The current site’s opt-out process applies to publicly available profile information on that site. It does not remove information from the 2024 breach and cannot confirm whether your data was included in it.
Your credit report
A credit report cannot establish that your SSN was in the NPD dataset. It can, however, reveal possible misuse, including an account you did not open, an unfamiliar hard inquiry or a collection account you do not recognize.

What to do whether or not you get a match
1. Freeze all three credit reports
Request a security freeze separately from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A freeze is free, does not affect your credit score and remains in place until you lift or remove it.

A freeze blocks potential creditors from accessing the credit report generally used to open new accounts. You must place it with all three bureaus individually. Contacting one bureau does not freeze all three; that shared-notification rule applies to an initial fraud alert, not a credit freeze.
2. Consider a fraud alert
An initial fraud alert is free and lasts one year. You can place it with any one of the three credit bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two. It tells businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit, but it does not block access to your credit report.
If you have experienced identity theft and have an FTC identity-theft report or police report, you may qualify for an extended fraud alert lasting seven years.
3. Review your credit reports
Get your reports at the official site, AnnualCreditReport.com. Check for:
- Credit accounts you did not open
- Hard inquiries you do not recognize
- Unfamiliar collection accounts
- Names, addresses or employers that are incorrect
- New personal information attached to your file
Continue checking periodically. A clean report today does not rule out misuse later.

5. Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN
Anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity can request a free six-digit IRS Identity Protection PIN, even if they are not required to file a tax return.

- Sign in to your IRS Online Account.
- Open the Profile tab.
- Select the IP PIN option.
- Choose Continuous enrollment or One-time enrollment.
The PIN is generated annually. After online enrollment, you generally retrieve each new PIN through your IRS Online Account instead of receiving a CP01A notice by mail. The IRS will never call, email or text you to request an IP PIN.
6. Report actual identity theft
If you find an unfamiliar account, tax return, employment record or other misuse, report it at IdentityTheft.gov. The FTC recovery process can create a personalized recovery plan and help document what happened.

Frequently asked questions
FAQ
Is there an official way to check whether my SSN was in the National Public Data breach?
No. The SSA does not provide an NPD-breach lookup tool. Pentester’s NPD Breach Check is a private checker and can provide only an indication, not official confirmation.
Should I enter my full Social Security number into a breach checker?
The Pentester checker described here does not ask for your full SSN; it asks for an email address, name and birth year. Do not enter your full SSN into an unverified website.
What if the NPD checker says there is no match?
A no-match is not proof that your SSN was not exposed. The checker may use an incomplete copy or subset of the data, and records may fail to match because of outdated or inconsistent personal information.
Can I replace my Social Security number after a breach?
An exposed SSN generally cannot simply be replaced. Focus on prevention and detection: freeze all three credit reports, review your reports, secure your my Social Security account, request an IRS IP PIN and report confirmed identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Bottom Line
Pentester’s NPD Breach Check is the currently available public NPD-specific option, but it is a private and limited indicator—not an official confirmation. Whether it reports a match or not, freeze Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, review your credit reports, check your SSA earnings record, enroll for an IRS IP PIN and report any actual misuse through IdentityTheft.gov.
