Citigroup’s reported 2012 consolidation reduced its data-center count from 70 to 20. The project was not simply 50 closures: Citi also built eight new data centers worldwide, including facilities in Austin and Frankfurt. The figures describe a completed historical project, not the bank’s present-day infrastructure.

How many data centers did Citigroup close?

Data Center Knowledge reported on December 19, 2012, that Citi had completed a major data-center consolidation. Its account gives a before-and-after count of 70 centers and 20 centers. The difference is 50, matching the headline’s reference to shuttered facilities. The report does not provide a facility-by-facility list of those closures or their individual dates. Data Center Knowledge’s December 2012 account is the basis for these figures.

Why did Citi consolidate its data centers?

Jagdish Rao, then Citigroup’s head of enterprise operations and technology, characterized the effort as a five-year strategy aligned with the bank’s global operating model. He said, “We are near to the end of a five year data center consolidation strategy,” and described it as “a massive consolidation that follows our global operational model.” The remarks were reported as the project neared completion in 2012. Data Center Knowledge.

Rao also said the bank reviewed older facilities, including some sites it had acquired through acquisitions, and determined that many could be closed. The report does not detail the bank’s site-by-site criteria or describe how workloads were moved.

Did Citigroup build new data centers during the consolidation?

Yes. Citi built eight new data centers around the world as part of the project, according to the 2012 report. Austin and Frankfurt were named as examples. That new construction is important context: the consolidation reduced the reported total, but it also involved building replacement or additional infrastructure. The source does not identify all eight locations or specify how each new center related to a particular closure. Data Center Knowledge.

The report notes that the Frankfurt facility had a green wall irrigated with recycled water. That is a description of a feature, not a quantified measure of energy savings, water savings, or environmental impact.

What the report does—and does not—establish

The published account supports a limited historical picture: a five-year consolidation strategy, a reported decrease from 70 data centers to 20, and eight new centers built worldwide. It does not quantify the project’s budget, savings, or emissions reduction. Nor does it establish customer disruption, employee effects, workload migrations, or Citi’s current data-center count. Those details should not be inferred from the 2012 figures.
