Yes, Bitcoin could lose much or nearly all of its market value if demand and confidence collapsed, or if serious failures undermined its usefulness. But the available evidence describes possible risks; it does not show that a collapse to zero is likely, imminent or inevitable.

“Value destroyed” can mean different things: Bitcoin’s market price falling toward zero, people losing confidence in it, or the network itself failing to preserve security and integrity. These outcomes are related, but not interchangeable. A steep price decline does not by itself mean the network has failed, and a technical risk disclosure is not a price forecast.

What could “Bitcoin’s value” mean?

Bitcoin has no guaranteed market price. Its price depends on buyers’ willingness to hold or use it, while its network operates according to software rules and the participation of miners and users. A breakdown in one area can affect the others, but the distinction matters when assessing claims that Bitcoin could become worthless.

  • Market value: the price people are willing to pay. It could fall sharply if demand or confidence weakened, even if the network continued to operate.
  • Network function: the ability to process and verify transactions under the protocol. A serious security or coordination failure could impair Bitcoin’s usefulness, but would not automatically establish a particular market price.
  • Access to Bitcoin: the ability to buy, sell, store or transfer it through exchanges, custodians and other services. A failure or restriction affecting an intermediary can harm customers without making the Bitcoin network itself worthless.

How plausible loss pathways differ

Pathway How it could affect value or use What the cited evidence establishes What it does not establish
Demand and confidence shock Fewer people may want to hold or use Bitcoin, reducing market demand and price. A 2025 SEC-filed annual report identifies competition from payment systems, including central-bank digital currencies, as a possible challenge to Bitcoin as a medium of exchange or store of value. It does not establish that this competition will cause demand to collapse or that Bitcoin will lose all market value.
Mining or protocol security problem Insufficient or concentrated mining capacity could make the network more vulnerable to disruption or manipulation. The European Central Bank’s May 2025 review discusses the role of miners and the risk that inadequate compensation could contribute to miner exits and concentration. A 2026 SEC-filed annual report describes a 51% attack scenario. These disclosures do not show that an attack is underway or that one is inevitable.
Regulation or restricted market access Rules or enforcement could make buying, selling, custody or use more difficult in a jurisdiction, potentially affecting confidence and demand. SEC-filed annual reports discuss regulatory scrutiny and related risks. The cited material does not establish a worldwide ban or a specific future regulatory outcome.
Exchange or custodian failure A service provider’s failure, breach or loss of customer assets could damage users and confidence in the market. A 2026 SEC-filed annual report identifies exchange and custodian risks. A loss at an intermediary is not the same as the Bitcoin network becoming worthless.
Future quantum capabilities Advanced quantum computing could create future challenges for cryptographic protections and transaction privacy. A September 2025 Federal Reserve discussion paper examines a future-state threat and notes possible post-quantum protections for distributed-ledger security and integrity. The paper does not predict an imminent attack or Bitcoin’s destruction.

Why a price collapse is possible—but not demonstrated by past declines

Bitcoin has undergone large price swings. A 2026 SEC-filed annual report recounts earlier steep rises and drawdowns and warns that further declines may occur. In that filing, Bitcoin’s market capitalization was reported at approximately $1.33 trillion on March 20, 2026, approximately 24% below its mid-December 2025 level. The filing based that figure on a Bitcoin price of approximately $70,400 and 20 million coins issued. These are dated figures from one registrant’s filing, not a current quote or a forecast.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

A fall in market capitalization shows that the market assigned Bitcoin a lower aggregate value over that period; it does not show that the network had failed or that a future value of zero follows. The reviewed sources do not calculate the probability of Bitcoin reaching zero.

Why a limited supply does not guarantee a price

Bitcoin’s issuance follows protocol rules, but scarcity alone cannot guarantee demand or a particular market price. The 2025 SEC-filed annual report notes that other payment systems, including central-bank digital currencies, could compete with Bitcoin as a medium of exchange or store of value. That is a disclosed risk, not a prediction that those systems will displace Bitcoin.

The same filing reported a block reward of 3.125 BTC following the April 2024 halving. That is the reward reported for that period, not a timeless figure. The supply schedule can limit issuance under the protocol, but it cannot compel people to buy, hold or accept Bitcoin.

What could threaten network security?

Mining concentration and incentives

Miners help verify transactions and maintain the blockchain. The European Central Bank’s May 2025 Financial Stability Review explains that network security depends in part on having enough miners and computational capacity to prevent control by a single mining entity. It also discusses a possible incentive problem: if miner income falls and neither Bitcoin’s price nor transaction fees compensate, some miners might leave, potentially increasing concentration.

A 2026 SEC-filed annual report describes a 51% attack as a scenario in which a group controlling more than half of the network’s mining power could control the network and manipulate the blockchain. These descriptions identify a risk mechanism; they do not establish that such control has been achieved or that an attack is expected.

Software and coordination

Bitcoin relies on participants using and coordinating around compatible software rules. A severe protocol or coordination failure could impair confidence or network function. The cited sources discuss security and integrity risks, but they do not establish that Bitcoin’s protocol is currently failing.

Could quantum computing destroy Bitcoin?

Not on the evidence cited here. A Federal Reserve discussion paper published in September 2025 analyzes a future-state quantum threat. Its authors say post-quantum measures could protect distributed-ledger security and integrity, while historical transaction privacy could remain vulnerable to “harvest now, decrypt later.” That describes a potential technology risk and a possible category of mitigation, not a prediction that quantum computers will soon break Bitcoin or erase its value.

How regulation and intermediaries can affect holders

Regulatory actions can affect the services available to users and investors, while exchange or custodian failures can expose customers to losses or make access difficult. SEC-filed annual reports discuss these kinds of risks; the European Central Bank’s May 2025 review also examines volatility, leverage, concentration and connections to the financial system.

The ECB’s May 2025 assessment said, “For now, these risks still appear to be limited – crypto-assets have not yet become an integral part of traditional finance.” This was a euro-area financial-stability assessment at that time. It is not a guarantee about Bitcoin’s price or its future, and it does not mean an individual exchange or custodian cannot fail.

Lost coins are not the same as destroyed value

A 2026 SEC-filed annual report cites estimates that 3.0–3.8 million Bitcoin may be unrecoverable because of forgotten passwords, misplaced wallets or dormant addresses. That is an estimate, not a definitive count. Coins that their owners cannot access may reduce the supply practically available to trade, but this does not mean all Bitcoin has lost its market value or that the network has failed.

What the historical figures can—and cannot—tell you

The European Central Bank’s May 2025 review reported that Bitcoin’s market capitalization increased by more than 120% during 2024, while also describing high volatility. For 2024, the ECB said Bitcoin was twice as volatile as gold and nearly three times as volatile as the S&P 500. Those are historical comparisons for that year, not universal relationships or forecasts.

The same ECB review reported that the total crypto-asset market capitalization—not Bitcoin alone—fell from USD 3.7 trillion in 2024 to USD 2.8 trillion by the end of March 2025. These figures describe past market movements; they do not demonstrate that Bitcoin is headed to zero.

How to read claims that Bitcoin will become worthless

  • Check whether the claim concerns market price, network security, or access through an intermediary; evidence about one does not automatically prove another.
  • Look for a dated source and its scope. A filing’s market figures are observations at a stated date, and an institution’s historical volatility comparison applies to its stated period.
  • Distinguish a disclosed risk from a forecast. The SEC-filed reports describe risks identified by their registrants; they are not SEC predictions that those outcomes will occur.
  • Treat statements about future technology, regulation or adoption as scenarios unless the source provides evidence that the event is already happening.
