China imported 10.62 million metric tons of soybeans from Brazil in June 2025, up 9.2% from 9.72 million metric tons in June 2024. The increase was reported by Reuters from Chinese customs data; the headline rounded the change to 9%.

How much soy did China import from Brazil in June 2025?

Brazil shipped 10.62 million metric tons of soybeans to China in June 2025, according to customs figures reported by Reuters, republished by Successful Farming. The comparable figure for June 2024 was 9.72 million metric tons, making the year-over-year increase 9.2%.

Brazil accounted for 86.6% of China’s total soybean imports in June 2025. That share puts the bilateral increase in context: Brazil-origin cargoes represented most of China’s soybean arrivals that month.

What was behind the increase?

The Reuters report cited a strong Brazilian harvest and the ongoing trade dispute between China and the United States as context for the higher Brazilian shipments. It also reported that China’s imports of U.S.-origin soybeans rose 21% in June 2025. These are reported factors, not a quantified breakdown of why volumes changed; the figures do not establish how much each factor contributed.

How to interpret the 9% figure

The 9% headline is a rounded description of a 9.2% rise in one month’s imports compared with the same month a year earlier. It does not, by itself, show a lasting change in China’s sourcing, measure the effect of any particular trade policy, or predict later monthly shipments. The relevant comparison is June 2025 against June 2024, with the same origin and month held constant.

Why later June figures are a separate comparison

A separate Reuters report covered June 2026, not June 2025. It said China imported 12.08 million metric tons from Brazil that June, up 13.7% year over year, while total soybean arrivals reached 13.55 million metric tons. For January through June 2026, Brazil supplied 34.75 million metric tons, up 9.1% year over year; U.S.-origin shipments over that six-month period were 9.31 million metric tons, down 42.4%.

Those 2026 figures describe a later period and should not be substituted for the 2025 result. The later report also discussed delayed cargo clearances in explaining the 2026 record total, a factor that does not establish the cause of the June 2025 increase. See Reuters’ June 2026 report.
