A data analytics credential can help you qualify for reporting, business intelligence, and analyst roles—but the right choice depends on your starting point and the tools employers use. A beginner-friendly professional certificate is not the same as a proctored certification exam, and neither guarantees a job or salary increase.
For a career changer, the most practical route is usually to build core skills first, then add a credential tied to a hiring market such as Power BI, Tableau, Snowflake, or Databricks. The options below are ranked by use case rather than by prestige alone, with current 2026 details and important expiration or version warnings.

1. Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate: best for beginners
Google’s foundational program is a sensible starting point if you are changing careers and have no analytics background. Google says no prior experience or degree is required, and high-school-level mathematics is enough.
The curriculum covers spreadsheets, SQL, data cleaning, visualization, Tableau, R programming, and case-study work. Google estimates approximately 240 total hours, which works out to about three months at 20 hours per week or six months at 10 hours per week. In the United States and Canada, Google currently lists a price of $49 per month after a seven-day trial, although Coursera offers can vary.
#1 Best Overall
A key detail is easy to miss: the current foundational program teaches R, not Python. That makes it useful for learning an end-to-end workflow, but less suitable if your target job specifically asks for Python.
Personal-finance view: Its relatively low monthly cost can make sense if you can finish on schedule. At $49 per month, taking six months would cost about $294 before taxes or local pricing differences. The certificate is evidence of coursework, not a standardized proctored exam.
2. Google Advanced Data Analytics Professional Certificate: best for Python and statistics
This is a follow-on program for people who already understand basic cleaning, SQL, visualization, and analytical workflows. Google recommends its foundational certificate or equivalent experience before starting.
The advanced curriculum focuses on statistical analysis, Python, regression models, and machine learning. Google says it can be completed in less than six months.

It is not the best first purchase for someone who is still learning spreadsheets, SQL, or basic data visualization.
Personal-finance view: Treat this as a second-stage investment. Paying for an advanced program before establishing basic skills can increase your education costs without improving your job prospects proportionately.
3. IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate: best beginner alternative for Python
IBM’s program is another entry-level route, but its tool mix differs from Google’s foundational offering. The current program includes Microsoft Excel, SQL, databases, Python, JupyterLab, IBM Cognos, dashboards, data visualization, and a hands-on capstone.
IBM’s badge page says learners must complete all eight courses and the graded assessments for those courses. IBM describes the program as preparation for an entry-level data analyst role and says it has an ACE credit recommendation for up to 12 semester hours at participating institutions.
Recommended Free Tools
This is a strong alternative for a beginner who wants Python and notebook-based work from the outset. Like Google’s program, it is a course-based professional certificate rather than a vendor-neutral, proctored certification exam.
Rank #2
Personal-finance view: Compare the full subscription cost and expected completion time before enrolling. The potential college-credit recommendation is useful only if a participating institution accepts it, so confirm that directly before assigning it a monetary value.
4. Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate: best for Power BI jobs
Microsoft’s current credential name is Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate. The exam code remains PL-300. Older articles may still call it “Data Analyst Associate,” which is no longer the current credential name.
PL-300 is an intermediate, 100-minute proctored exam delivered through Pearson VUE. Its domains are:
- Prepare the data
- Model the data
- Visualize and analyze the data
- Manage and secure Power BI
Microsoft currently lists a 12-month renewal frequency. Role-based certifications can be renewed at no cost by passing an online assessment on Microsoft Learn. The exam is available in English and several other languages, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese variants.
Important account warning: Microsoft recommends registering with a personal Microsoft account. If you register through a work or school account, your exam records may be lost and unrecoverable when you leave that organization.
Best fit: Apply this credential to jobs that explicitly use Power BI. A certification tied to a tool appearing in local job listings is generally more useful than a credential selected only because it ranks highly online.
5. Tableau Certified Data Analyst: best for Tableau-heavy analytics teams
This is a formal Tableau product certification covering analysis, visualization, and visual best practices. Typical skills include connecting to relational data, using custom SQL and extracts, creating calculations and table calculations, applying filters and parameters, building maps and dashboards, and formatting or navigating visualizations.
Tableau describes its product certification exams as higher-stakes, invigilated exams. Online invigilation is available 24/7 when the candidate meets the required computer and network conditions. Tableau’s current certification destination redirects to Salesforce Trailhead Academy for the Tableau Data Analyst exam.
Do not confuse this credential with Tableau skill badges or skills assessments. Those are lower-stakes, self-invigilated assessments and are not equivalent to the Certified Data Analyst certification.
Rank #3
Best fit: Analysts working for employers where Tableau is a primary reporting and business-intelligence platform. If local job postings mostly request Power BI, the Microsoft credential is likely the more targeted option.
6. Databricks Certified Data Analyst Associate: best for lakehouse analytics
The Databricks Data Analyst Associate is a proctored certification focused on the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform. Its scope includes Databricks SQL, Unity Catalog, dashboards, and AI/BI Genie spaces.
The exam contains 45 scored multiple-choice questions and has a 90-minute limit. There is no required prerequisite, although Databricks recommends related training and approximately six months of hands-on data-analyst experience. Candidates can take it online with proctoring or at a test center.
The certification is valid for two years. Recertification requires taking the full exam version currently in production. Skills covered include discovering and managing data, querying, cleaning, joins, aggregations, views, query optimization, dashboards, data modeling, and security practices.
Best fit: Analysts already working with Databricks SQL or applying to organizations standardizing on the Databricks lakehouse. For a complete beginner, the platform-specific scope may be too narrow as a first credential.
7. SnowPro Core: best for Snowflake analytics environments
SnowPro Core validates knowledge of Snowflake’s platform rather than general analytics ability. The current exam is COF-C03, which launched on February 16, 2026, replacing COF-C02.
Snowflake lists the price at $175 per attempt and recommends at least six months of Snowflake experience. Subject areas include:
- Snowflake AI Data Cloud architecture
- Accounts and virtual warehouses
- Loading, unloading, and transforming data
- Structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data
- Performance monitoring and optimization
- Data collaboration and protection
- Connectivity
Version warning: Study materials written for COF-C02 may contain outdated objectives after the February 2026 transition. Confirm that your preparation materials refer to COF-C03 before paying for an exam attempt.
Best fit: Analysts, analytics engineers, and other data professionals who work directly in Snowflake. It is less useful as a standalone credential for someone seeking broad, tool-independent analytics training.
8. SAS Statistical Business Analyst: best for SAS-based statistical analysis
The current exam is SAS Statistical Business Analysis Using SAS 9: Regression and Modeling, exam ID A00-240. SAS lists 60 multiple-choice and short-answer questions, up to five additional unscored items, a one-hour-and-50-minute time limit, a 68% passing score, and a worldwide price of $180.

SAS says A00-240 will retire on November 30, 2026. Credentials earned before retirement will not expire. SAS points candidates toward A00-480 Applied Statistics for Machine Learning as an alternative to monitor.
Best fit: Analysts whose employers use SAS and whose work involves regression, model preparation, and model evaluation. It is not a sensible default for someone who has no reason to use SAS.
9. INFORMS Certified Analytics Professional: best for end-to-end analytics practice
The INFORMS Certified Analytics Professional, or CAP, is independent of a specific vendor, dashboard product, or programming language. Its framework covers the full analytics process: framing the business problem, framing the analytics problem, data, methodology, model development, deployment, and lifecycle management.
Current levels are CAP-Essentials, CAP-Pro, and CAP-Expert. CAP-Expert requires an approved application before the exam. INFORMS says certificants must earn 30 professional development units during each three-year certification period.

Google’s Business Intelligence Professional Certificate is aimed at people who already have foundational analytics knowledge or equivalent experience. Its focus is data modeling, data visualization, dashboarding, and reporting, and Google says it can be completed in less than two months.
This makes it relevant to analysts moving toward business intelligence, reporting, dashboard development, and stakeholder-facing work. It should not be described as an independent BI certification comparable to PL-300 or Tableau Certified Data Analyst: it is a course-based professional certificate, not a proctored certification exam.

How to choose without wasting money
- Read 20 to 30 relevant job listings first. Count requests for Power BI, Tableau, Snowflake, Databricks, SAS, Python, SQL, and R. Let the local hiring market influence the credential.
- Separate learning from signaling. Google and IBM can provide structured learning and portfolio material. Microsoft, Tableau, Databricks, Snowflake, SAS, and INFORMS provide exam-based or formal professional credentials.
- Calculate the complete cost. Include subscriptions, exam fees, retakes, practice tests, software, and time away from paid work. The cheapest listed price is not necessarily the cheapest completed pathway.
- Build evidence alongside the credential. A portfolio project should show the problem, data-cleaning decisions, analysis, visuals, and business conclusion. A certificate without demonstrable work may not distinguish you in an interview.
- Check currency before purchasing preparation materials. SnowPro changed from COF-C02 to COF-C03 in February 2026, and SAS A00-240 is scheduled to retire in November 2026.
Credentials that should not be treated as current 2026 options
AWS Certified Data Analytics – Specialty retired on April 8, 2024. It should not appear in a current list of available AWS data-analytics certifications.
SAS Certified Advanced Analytics Professional Using SAS 9 retired as a pathway on June 30, 2025. Existing credentials remain valid, but it is not a new-certification route in 2026.
Also be skeptical of articles that say Google’s foundational certificate teaches Python, call PL-300 “Data Analyst Associate” without mentioning the current Power BI name, or present every credential in this list as equivalent. Those descriptions leave out material differences in curriculum, assessment, and platform dependence.

FAQ
Which data analytics certification is best for a complete beginner?
The Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate is the most direct beginner option because Google requires no prior experience or degree and says high-school-level math is sufficient. IBM’s Data Analyst Professional Certificate is a strong alternative if you want Python, JupyterLab, and IBM Cognos from the beginning.
Is a professional certificate the same as a certification?
No. Google and IBM offer course-based professional certificates that require completing lessons and assessments. Microsoft, Tableau, Databricks, Snowflake, and SAS use formal certification exams, while INFORMS CAP is an independent professional certification with defined levels and eligibility requirements.
Should I choose Power BI or Tableau?
Choose the platform that appears most often in the jobs you want. Microsoft’s PL-300 is targeted to Power BI roles, while Tableau Certified Data Analyst is designed for Tableau-heavy teams. Neither is automatically better across all employers.
Are data analytics certifications worth the cost?
They can be worthwhile when the credential matches a target role and you also develop practical SQL, spreadsheet, visualization, modeling, and communication skills. Before enrolling, compare the full cost and time commitment with local job requirements; a certificate alone does not guarantee employment or a higher salary.

The Bottom Line
For most beginners, start with either the Google Data Analytics Professional Certificate or the IBM Data Analyst Professional Certificate, choosing R-centered learning with Google or Python-centered learning with IBM. Once you have practical experience, choose a platform credential that matches employer demand: PL-300 for Power BI, Tableau Certified Data Analyst for Tableau, SnowPro Core for Snowflake, or Databricks Certified Data Analyst Associate for Databricks. Experienced practitioners seeking a vendor-neutral credential can consider INFORMS CAP.
Before spending money, verify the current exam version, renewal rules, and official price. In 2026, that means paying particular attention to SnowPro COF-C03 and the scheduled retirement of SAS A00-240.
