Clear Street says its UK business has moved from an FCA-authorized launch to providing execution, clearing and financing in UK and European equities. The September 17, 2026 announcement marks a key infrastructure step: the firm says it now clears its own UK and European equity business directly and holds UK, European and US positions on one ledger. This is an institutional-services expansion, not the launch of a retail investing app.

What changed in Clear Street’s UK business?

Clear Street announced on September 17, 2026, that its UK business was providing execution, clearing and financing in UK and European equities after admission as a General Clearing Member of the London Stock Exchange. The announcement describes a build-out over time rather than a single new product launch. Clear Street’s announcement dates its FCA-authorized UK launch to December 2024.

Key milestones

  • December 2024: Clear Street says its UK business launched with FCA authorization and joined the London Metal Exchange as a Category 1 ring-dealing member.
  • July 2026: Clear Street says it became a General Clearing Member of LCH EquityClear.
  • September 3, 2026: The firm’s admission as a London Stock Exchange Member Firm and General Clearing Member took effect.
  • September 17, 2026: Clear Street announced that it was providing execution, clearing and financing in UK and European equities.

The company also says it added high-touch, low-touch and algorithmic equities execution, synthetic and cash prime brokerage, and securities financing. In April 2026, it received authorization from the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets to operate as an investment firm, establishing a licensed presence across the European Economic Area. That is part of the broader European build-out, but the September announcement centers on UK and European equity services.

What services does Clear Street say it offers?

Clear Street’s announcement describes services for institutional clients, including execution, clearing, financing, prime brokerage and securities financing. It does not announce a consumer brokerage app or establish that these services are available to individual investors.

For institutional firms assessing a provider, the relevant questions are the markets and asset classes covered, available execution methods, whether clearing is direct or intermediated, access to prime brokerage and securities financing, and how positions and risk information are consolidated. Clear Street’s announcement outlines its own offering; it does not provide a like-for-like comparison with other providers or independent evidence that its model is superior.

Why does direct clearing matter?

Clear Street says it now clears its own UK and European equity business directly rather than relying on a third-party clearer. It also says UK, European and US positions are held on one ledger. The company’s stated rationale is that this arrangement can give institutional clients a more unified view of positions and risk across regions and reduce the need to reconcile against another clearer’s records at the close.

That is Clear Street’s description of its operating model and intended client benefit, not an independently verified performance finding. The announcement does not quantify any effect on cost, settlement speed, risk reduction or execution quality.

Uri Cohen, Clear Street’s CEO and co-founder, said the company believes firms will benefit from holding the trade lifecycle themselves and giving clients a single view of global business as markets move towards round-the-clock trading. Alex Lawton, CEO of Clear Street UK and Europe, said clients want London execution aligned with their US book and risk view, and that in-house clearing helps provide that alignment. Both statements are company-issued views.

What does FCA approval establish?

Clear Street’s legal page says Clear Street UK Limited is authorized and regulated in the UK by the FCA and is a Category 1 member of the London Metals Exchange. The company’s legal page does not, by itself, establish the precise scope of permissions for every service a client may be considering.

The FCA describes its Financial Services Register as the public record for firms and individuals authorized by the FCA or the Prudential Regulation Authority. Its guidance explains that authorization covers specified products or services, so a firm’s permission should be checked against the particular activity being offered. Consult the FCA’s register guidance and verify the relevant entry and permissions rather than treating authorization as blanket approval.

FCA authorization should not be read as a guarantee of investment safety, performance or eligibility for Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection. The available company announcement and legal page do not set out Clear Street UK Limited’s detailed register entry or exact activity limitations.

How large does Clear Street say its business is?

In its September 17, 2026 announcement, Clear Street reported more than 900 institutional clients, average daily US equities trading of $33.6 billion, around 3.4% of US equity market volume, and 57 exchange and clearing memberships. These are company-published figures, not independently verified in the cited material; they describe the firm’s reported scale, not a measure of its UK operation alone.
