The court also barred Mediatonas and associated people from using Eastwood’s identity to promote CBD or falsely claiming he was in the CBD business. It was a default judgment—not a jury verdict after a contested trial.
What the lawsuit alleged
Eastwood and Garrapata filed the case on July 22, 2020, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, case No. 2:20-cv-06503. The complaint named several defendants, including Mediatonas UAB. It alleged that a fabricated online “news” article used Eastwood’s photographs and invented quotes and interview claims to promote CBD products. The complaint also said Eastwood had no connection to CBD products and had never given the purported interview. Those are allegations in the complaint, not findings established by a contested trial. What the court ordered and how much was awarded
On February 26, 2021, the court restrained Mediatonas and related persons from using Eastwood’s name, likeness, or persona to promote or sell CBD products, and from falsely stating that he manufactured, distributed, or sold them. On October 1, 2021, the court granted a renewed motion for default judgment. The docket records a judgment entered October 12 against Mediatonas UAB for $6,094,565.33, plus post-judgment interest. “$6.1 million” is the rounded headline version of that amount. Because the judgment was entered by default, it should not be described as a jury award or as damages assessed after a contested trial. Did Clint Eastwood endorse CBD?
The complaint said Eastwood had no connection to CBD products and did not give the interview used in the alleged promotional material. The court’s injunction addressed using his identity to market CBD and false claims that he was in the business of making, distributing, or selling it. A different proceeding, case No. 2:21-cv-00356, resulted in a May 2022 judgment discussing alleged hidden metatags that could direct searches for “Clint Eastwood CBD” to online-cbd-shop.com and a marketplace.
