Casino chips evolved from clay tokens into engineered gaming currency made through several manufacturing processes and designed to be identifiable, trackable and visible to casino surveillance. The exact date when clay gave way to plastic is not established by the available history; the clearest dated milestone is a manufacturer-reported introduction of injection-molded plastic chips in the late 1960s.
How have casino chips evolved?
The history is clearest for the United States. Gaming Partners International (GPI), a casino-chip manufacturer, said in a 2009 SEC filing that U.S. chips were originally made of clay and that clay had been replaced by plastic materials many years earlier. Its 2004 filing quotes the company’s account: “Originally, gaming chips in the United States were made of clay and called ‘clay chips.’” Neither filing gives a date for the broader transition, so there is no established single year when casino chips changed from clay to plastic.
GPI’s 2004 filing dates injection-molded plastic chips sold under its Bud Jones brand to the late 1960s. That is a company-reported product milestone, not proof that these were the first plastic chips in the industry. The filings describe a gradual shift in materials and production rather than a complete, independently documented chronology of casino tokens.
What are casino chips made of, and how are they manufactured?
Casino chips should not all be described as either pure clay or simple plastic discs. GPI’s 2009 filing identifies three production approaches used for American-style chips: injection molding, sublimation and thermo-compression molding. Its account associates Paulson chips commonly called “clay chips” with thermo-compression molding, not with chips made entirely of clay.

| Process | What the manufacturer filing describes | Associated product or detail |
|---|---|---|
| Injection molding | Plastic is formed in a mold. | GPI reported that injection-molded plastic chips were created under the Bud Jones brand in the late 1960s. |
| Sublimation | Plastic discs have designs transferred by pad printing. | The filing names the process but does not provide a product date. |
| Thermo-compression molding | A proprietary formulation is compressed, with inlays incorporated during compression. | Associated in the filing with Paulson chips often called “clay chips.” |
These descriptions come from GPI’s historical corporate disclosures, not from a current independent survey of manufacturers. They explain how the company characterized its products and methods; they do not establish how commonly each process is used today.
How do casinos make chips harder to counterfeit?
Chip security can be layered rather than relying on a single visible mark. GPI’s filings describe capabilities including ultraviolet pigments or inks, laser pigments, holograms, customized identifying features and embedded RFID. The company also described RFID as a way to support authentication and tracking. These are historically disclosed security options, not evidence that every casino uses them or that RFID is now standard across the industry.

- Newly Designed Poker Chip Case - We heard you and we designed a poker chip case that is tougher than standard aluminum poker chip cases. Using thermopolymer ABS that is injection molded into a single rigid piece that is extremely tough and durable. The poker chip case no longer has a cheap inner plastic chip tray but a custom designed injection molded solid core. No more cracked inner trays! We added 3 hinges instead of the standard 2 hinge design with keyless latches because we all know those key locking latches don't work.
- Versatile Poker Chips - Each chip has denominations in the center and around the chip. Wow all your friends with the best looking poker chips around. Show off your poker chip shuffling and flipping skills to intimidate the other players!
Visible designs also have an operational purpose: staff and surveillance systems need to distinguish chip values quickly. Ontario’s regulation requires chip design and manufacture to permit the value of each chip in a stack to be distinguished by CCTV. This makes readability in a surveillance image part of chip design, alongside authentication and tracking features.
How do American-style chips differ from European jetons and plaques?
GPI’s filing describes American-style chips as distinct from European-style gaming pieces called jetons and plaques. Jetons are circular; plaques may be rectangular, square, oval or custom-shaped. The filing associates both mainly with traditional European games. This is the manufacturer’s description of the categories, not a claim that every casino in either region uses only one form.

Are casino chips the same as home poker chips?
No. A consumer poker chip set may resemble casino chips in form and function during a game, but it is not equivalent to casino-issued gaming currency. The cited filings do not establish that home sets use casino-grade materials, manufacturing methods or anti-counterfeiting features. For personal use, a home set is a game accessory; casino chips are controlled instruments whose design can support value recognition, surveillance and security.
