Micron makes semiconductor memory and storage products. DRAM is temporary working memory for active computing; NAND is rewritable, persistent storage used in products such as SSDs. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is a specialized, vertically stacked form of DRAM built to move data quickly alongside processors in AI and high-performance computing systems.
What does Micron make?
Micron Technology sells more than individual memory chips. Its portfolio includes DRAM components and modules, HBM, NAND products, SSDs, managed NAND, multichip packages, and wafers. The company also describes system-level products that can combine NAND with a controller and firmware, and sometimes DRAM. Its product portfolio spans data center, client-computing, mobile, automotive, consumer, and embedded applications.
In practical terms, Micron makes both memory and storage. Those terms describe different jobs: memory holds information a computer is actively using, while storage keeps data for later.
How are DRAM, NAND, and HBM different?
| Technology | What it does | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| DRAM | Working memory for active programs and computing tasks | Volatile: it loses its contents when power is off. |
| NAND | Persistent storage, commonly used in SSDs and managed flash products | Nonvolatile and rewritable. |
| HBM | High-bandwidth memory placed close to processors for data-intensive workloads | A specialized stacked form of DRAM, not NAND storage. |
What does Micron DRAM do?
DRAM provides fast, temporary space for information a processor needs to access while tasks are running. A computer’s main memory is a familiar example. When power is cut, DRAM does not retain its contents, so it is not a substitute for an SSD or other persistent storage.

Micron lists DRAM products for data center, client PC, graphics, industrial, mobile, and automotive markets. Its offerings include chips as well as modules designed for systems such as servers, workstations, and data centers. Standard DDR5 RAM is an example of DRAM; it is not HBM, and a module must match the system’s supported memory type and specifications.
What does Micron NAND do?
NAND flash stores data without continuous power and can be rewritten. It is used in SSDs and managed NAND products, where flash is packaged with supporting components and software to function as storage in a device or system.

Micron identifies data center, client PC, consumer, automotive, mobile, and embedded uses for NAND. Its SSD portfolio includes data center and client products. Unlike DRAM, NAND is intended to keep files and other information when a device is turned off.
What is HBM, and why is it used for AI?
HBM stands for “High Bandwidth Memory,” according to Micron’s HBM4 FAQ and product information. It is still DRAM, but the memory dies are stacked vertically and linked using through-silicon vias (TSVs). This architecture is designed to provide high data bandwidth in a compact package close to a processor.

That makes HBM useful in AI and high-performance computing systems, where processors may need to move large amounts of data rapidly. Micron explains that traditional DRAM such as DDR memory handles general computing tasks, while HBM supports AI and HPC workloads that need continuous streams of data. The two can serve different roles in the same system: HBM supplies high-bandwidth data close to a processor, while DDR5 or LPDDR5 can provide other system memory.
HBM therefore is not a universal replacement for conventional system memory, nor is it a consumer RAM module that can simply be swapped into a PC. It is a package-level component designed for compatible compute platforms.

What are Micron’s current HBM4 specifications?
Micron’s HBM4 product pages report that its HBM4 36GB 12-high stack is in high-volume production and designed for next-generation AI platforms. Micron lists a 2048-pin interface, pin speeds greater than 11.0 Gbps, and bandwidth greater than 2.8 TB/s per stack. These are vendor-reported product specifications, not independent measurements of the HBM market as a whole.
Micron’s stated efficiency comparison is specifically between 12-high HBM4 and 12-high HBM3E at similar speeds. Stack height and comparison conditions matter when interpreting performance claims; the numbers should not be treated as a generic comparison across all HBM products.
How does HBM fit into Micron’s wider portfolio?
HBM is one part of a broader mix that serves different points in computing systems: DRAM modules support general working-memory needs, HBM targets tightly coupled high-bandwidth workloads, and NAND products provide persistent storage. Micron’s fiscal 2026 results page also cites SSDs shipping for KV-cache applications and LPDDR5X shipping for flagship mobile devices, illustrating other uses for the company’s storage and memory products.
