There was no fixed cash prize for winning the 2026 Championship play-off final. The winner, Hull City, earned promotion to the Premier League; Deloitte estimated that promotion would bring at least £205 million in additional revenue across the next three seasons. That is a projection, not a match-day cheque, guaranteed payout or net profit.
What did the winner actually receive?
The formal reward was promotion. The English Football League’s regulations say the play-off winner “shall also be promoted to The Premier League upon the same terms” as the automatically promoted clubs. They do not set a separate play-off-final prize cheque. EFL Regulations, section 10.1.1.
For the 2026 final, Deloitte’s Sports Business Group estimated at least £205 million in additional revenue for the promoted club over the next three seasons. Deloitte described the fixture as having “additional revenues of at least £205 million over the next three seasons at stake.” The figure is the projected revenue uplift linked to promotion—not a guaranteed sum, profit after costs, or amount paid immediately. Deloitte’s 2026 estimate.
Why the estimate varies by club
The £205 million estimate was for the 2026 finalists’ circumstances: Deloitte said neither Hull City nor Middlesbrough was already receiving parachute payments. Its estimate can differ for a finalist with parachute payments, because the change in revenue associated with promotion may be smaller. In 2025, Deloitte noted that Sheffield United was already receiving parachute payments and that its expected uplift differed from Sunderland’s. Deloitte’s 2025 discussion.

Deloitte reported in 2024 that an earlier estimate could rise to about £305 million if the promoted club survived its first Premier League season. That is historical context, not the 2026 estimate: the figure relates to a different season and scenario, and should not be substituted for the current season-specific projection. Deloitte’s 2024 estimate.
The winner also has an EFL contribution to pay
Promotion does not mean the club simply receives money. Under the EFL’s 2025/26 regulations, each club promoted automatically and the play-off winner must contribute £165,334 toward parachute-payment costs by 31 May. This is a required club contribution, not prize money paid to the winner. EFL Regulations, section 10.1.1.

The 2025/26 Championship play-off final was played on 23 May 2026. Hull City beat Middlesbrough 1–0 to secure promotion; the EFL recorded an attendance of 84,506. EFL Championship Play-Off Finals record and EFL match report.
How the play-offs change from 2026/27
The EFL announced that the Championship play-offs will expand to six teams from 2026/27. Its announcement describes eliminator ties leading into two-legged semi-finals, followed by a final between the semi-final winners. The EFL said the exact final format would be agreed later in 2026, so the announcement does not settle that detail. EFL format announcement.

Why there is no reliable itemized prize breakdown
Deloitte’s 2026 figure is an aggregate estimate of additional revenue over three seasons. The cited material does not provide a current-season itemized breakdown of broadcast distributions, matchday or commercial income, or contingent payments if the club is relegated. It would therefore be misleading to present those components as a precise prize-money calculation.
