Two separate cheese-recall clusters are at issue: select grated Pecorino Romano products recalled by The Ambriola Company, and cheeses made by Clover Hill Dairy, whose recall expanded to all of its cheeses on the market after a Listeria outbreak investigation. Neither notice means every product from the named brands is affected. Check the exact product, package, date and manufacturer against the live FDA notices before eating or discarding anything.

Is my cheese recalled?

Start with the product label, not just the brand name. Compare the product name, package size, UPC or lot/batch number, sell-by or expiration date, and manufacturer or plant number with the relevant FDA notice. Also consider where and when you bought it. Clover Hill cheese may have been repacked or sold under another label, so a brand name alone may not reveal its source.

FDA says the Clover Hill products should no longer be available in stores and most are past their expiration dates, but a product could still be in a freezer, stored at home or repacked. The FDA’s public recall list may not include every state or local recall, so the notices are not an exhaustive inventory of all recalled food.

Which cheese brands were recalled for Listeria?

Select grated Pecorino Romano: Ambriola Company

The Ambriola Company announced its recall on December 3, 2025; FDA posted the notice on January 15, 2026. Routine testing confirmed Listeria monocytogenes, and additional products processed at the same West Caldwell, New Jersey, facility were recalled out of caution. The affected items were select grated Pecorino Romano products sold under Ambriola, Locatelli, Member’s Mark, Pinna and Boar’s Head names—not all products from those brands.

Clover Hill Dairy: a broader, facility-wide cheese recall

FDA linked a Listeria outbreak to requeson, a soft cheese similar to ricotta, made by Clover Hill Dairy, LLC, in Mechanicsville, Maryland. Clover Hill initially recalled requeson/soft ricotta, then expanded the recall on June 18, 2026 to all of its cheese products on the market made at the facility. The list includes ricotta/requeson, jalapeño soft ricotta, cuajada, cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack, marble jack, cheese curds, snack packs, smoked cheeses and flavored varieties, in packages from small individual portions to bulk buckets and boxes.

Clamshell labels may show plant number 24-128. Check the FDA’s live outbreak notice for the full product list and identifiers.

What do the outbreak numbers mean?

In its August 26, 2026 update, FDA reported 15 people infected with the outbreak strain across four states, including 14 hospitalizations and one death. Illnesses began between March 6, 2023 and July 8, 2026; FDA said the investigation was complete. These are Clover Hill outbreak totals, not illnesses attributed to every recalled brand or notice. Separately, the Ambriola notice reported no illnesses at the time it was posted.

What should I do if I have a recalled cheese?

  1. Do not eat, serve or sell it. Follow the specific notice’s instructions to return or dispose of the product. Do not taste it to decide whether it is safe.
  2. Clean and sanitize what it touched. Follow FDA instructions for surfaces, containers and other items that contacted the cheese. Listeria can survive refrigerator temperatures and spread to other foods and surfaces; refrigeration does not make a potentially contaminated product safe.
  3. Watch for symptoms and contact a healthcare provider if they develop. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, tiredness, vomiting and diarrhea. Severe illness can involve headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions. FDA says symptoms usually begin within two weeks but can start the same day or as late as ten weeks after eating contaminated food. Read the FDA’s Listeria consumer guidance for more information.

Pregnant people, newborns, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill. During pregnancy, Listeria infection can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or life-threatening infection in a newborn. FDA advises higher-risk people not to eat queso fresco-type cheeses, including soft ricotta and requeson.

A separate 2026 notice: Made Fresh Salads

FDA also lists a February 20, 2026 recall of assorted five-pound Made Fresh Salads cream cheeses and tofu spread distributed in parts of New York, with expiration dates through February 27, 2026. The notice cited contaminated equipment, reported no illnesses and currently marks the recall terminated. This was separate from the Clover Hill outbreak. See the FDA Made Fresh Salads notice.
