The $5.5 billion figure was publicized by ESAC in March 2024, but it refers to an earlier estimate. The figures have different reporting bases and should not be treated as measurements of the same period.
How much does Canada’s video game industry contribute to GDP?
ESAC’s 2025 economic-impact report, prepared with Nordicity, estimates the industry’s total contribution to Canada’s economy at $5.1 billion for 2023–24. Of that amount, $3.9 billion is direct contribution and $1.2 billion is indirect and induced contribution. The latter reflects economic activity supported through the industry’s effects beyond its direct activity.
That total is an economic-impact estimate, not a measure of video game sales or total industry revenue. Those measures answer different questions and should not be compared as if they were the same statistic.
Is the $5.5 billion figure still current?
It is an earlier ESAC estimate, publicized in March 2024. ESAC’s later report, released January 28, 2025, gives a $5.1 billion total for 2023–24. The two published figures have distinct dates and study bases; the available information does not establish an exact methodological reconciliation or a precise reason for the difference.

ESAC’s March 2024 announcement described the $5.5 billion contribution and employment of more than 32,000 Canadians: ESAC’s March 2024 announcement. The subsequent ESAC/Nordicity estimate is in its 2024 Economic Impact Report.
What the 2023–24 estimate says about jobs
The ESAC/Nordicity report counts 34,010 direct full-time-equivalent (FTE) jobs in 2023–24. FTE is a way of expressing work in full-time-equivalent units; it is not necessarily the same as a count of individual people. The 25 largest companies supported 58% of industry FTEs, indicating that employment was concentrated among the largest firms.

Why Statistics Canada’s numbers look different
Statistics Canada’s August 2025 profile uses administrative data for 2013–2022. It reports that the number of video game firms more than doubled over that decade and revenue rose from $2 billion to $7 billion. These are business-count and revenue figures, not an update to ESAC’s 2023–24 GDP-impact estimate.

How to read the headline numbers
- GDP contribution or revenue: GDP contribution estimates the industry’s contribution to economic output; revenue measures sales. Statistics Canada’s $7 billion figure is revenue, not GDP.
- Direct or total impact: ESAC’s 2023–24 total includes both direct activity and indirect and induced effects. Its direct portion is $3.9 billion.
- Employment or people: ESAC’s 34,010 figure is direct FTE jobs, not a stated headcount of individual workers.
- Period and method: Check the study period and source before comparing figures. The Statistics Canada profile ends in 2022; the ESAC estimate covers 2023–24.
ESAC President and CEO Paul Fogolin characterized the sector as “a cornerstone of Canada’s digital economy, creating high quality jobs, driving innovation, and showcasing our creativity on the global stage.” That is the association’s description of the industry, alongside the economic estimates above.
