No—not if you were playing through the Game Pass catalog. When your subscription expires, you lose subscription access to those games, even if they are still installed. A game you bought separately follows its own purchase license.
What happens to games you downloaded with Game Pass?
Downloading or installing a catalog game does not mean you own it. Xbox says subscribers can access games in the library until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the library. Xbox’s Game Pass page explains the access rule; a Microsoft Learn community Q&A likewise says downloaded Game Pass games become inaccessible when the subscription ends.
The installed files may remain on your console or PC, but installation alone will not restore the right to launch and play the game through Game Pass.
Does it matter whether the subscription expired or the game left the catalog?
Both can end subscription access. If your subscription expires, catalog games are no longer playable through that subscription. If a game leaves the Game Pass library while your subscription is active, access through the catalog ends for that title. Xbox identifies both events as endpoints for library access.

What if you bought the game separately?
A separately purchased copy has a different license from access through Game Pass. If you own the game on the account you use to play, its access does not depend on the Game Pass subscription. Check the game’s ownership or purchase status rather than assuming every installed title is subscription-only.
Will your saved progress still be there?
Access to launch a game and retention of its save data are separate questions. A response in the Microsoft Community reports that progress is saved in the cloud and can be resumed after renewing or buying the game. That is community guidance, not a universal guarantee for every title, platform, or account state. Check the save behavior for the specific game if the progress matters to you.

How to check your access
- Check your subscription status in your Microsoft account or on your Xbox console; Xbox lists both as routes for managing a subscription.
- For a title you cannot launch, check whether it is still in the Game Pass library and whether you own it separately.
- If it is still in the library, an active eligible subscription is needed to play it through Game Pass. If you want access without relying on the catalog, you need to own the game separately.
Catalog availability and subscription terms can change, so confirm the current status of the title and your subscription before deciding what to renew or buy.
