Boeing announced the transfer of the Indian Air Force’s first C-17 Globemaster III on June 11, 2013, after the aircraft completed flight testing in the United States. It did not reach Indian soil that day: India’s Press Information Bureau reported its arrival on June 18.
Three dates mark the first aircraft’s journey

The dates describe separate steps, not conflicting accounts: delivery for testing, transfer after testing, and arrival in India.
How the C-17 fit into India’s acquisition
On June 15, 2011, Boeing announced that India’s Ministry of Defence had signed an agreement with the U.S. government to acquire 10 C-17 Globemaster III airlifters. Boeing’s 2011 announcement
The first aircraft’s 2013 testing and transfer were the beginning of deliveries, not the end of the fleet story. Boeing announced delivery of an eleventh C-17 in 2019. The U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center said that last available aircraft was delivered to India on August 22, 2019, bringing the fleet to 11. What the aircraft was intended to support
Boeing’s June 2013 announcement framed the C-17 as supporting strategic and military airlift as well as humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and peacekeeping. Those are the manufacturer’s stated mission roles, not an independent assessment of the aircraft’s performance.
In the same announcement, Air Vice Marshal SRK Nair, then Assistant Chief of Air Staff Operations (Transport and Helicopters), said: “The C-17 will equip the Indian Air Force with amongst the world’s most advanced humanitarian and strategic capabilities,”
