Charlton Athletic received money when Ademola Lookman joined Everton in January 2017, and contemporary reporting said the club had negotiated a sell-on clause. But the available evidence does not establish Charlton’s total return or a later sell-on payment. The clearest documented use of the initial proceeds is the club’s statement that Lookman-sale money would help fund a £1.5 million training-ground phase.
What did Everton pay for Lookman?
Everton signed Lookman from Charlton in January 2017, when he was 19. The Premier League described the fee as undisclosed in its January 2017 report. The Guardian reported an initial fee of £7.5 million, potentially rising to £11 million with add-ons (The Guardian).
Those are media-reported deal figures, not an official disclosure of what Charlton received. The reported headline maximum also should not be treated as a confirmed sum paid: add-ons may be conditional, and the sources do not give a breakdown of payments to Charlton.
Did Charlton have a sell-on clause?
Yes, according to the Evening Standard’s contemporary report: Charlton negotiated a sell-on clause as part of Lookman’s move to Everton (Evening Standard). The report does not state the clause’s percentage or explain whether it applied to a later fee’s gross amount or profit.

That distinction matters when estimating a club’s return. A sell-on clause can generate a later payment if a player is transferred again, but without its wording and accounting basis, a subsequent transfer fee alone cannot show how much the original club earned.
What is documented about the money Charlton received?
Charlton’s February 2017 fans’ forum minutes connect Lookman’s sale to a specific investment. The club said some costs for a planned £1.5 million phase of training-ground work would be funded by money raised from the sale, and that the cash was then available (Charlton Athletic, fans’ forum minutes).

This is evidence that the club linked proceeds from Lookman’s sale to its training-ground plans. It is not a full accounting of the transfer, the amount allocated to the project, or Charlton’s net profit. The £1.5 million figure describes the phase of work, not the sum Charlton received for Lookman.
Could the 2019 Leipzig transfer have paid Charlton again?
Everton sold Lookman to RB Leipzig in July 2019 in a deal the BBC reported at £22.5 million (BBC Sport). Given the reported sell-on clause in his Everton move, that transfer is a plausible trigger for a payment to Charlton. The sources available here do not confirm whether Charlton received money from it or how much.

So the £22.5 million fee should not be presented as Charlton’s earnings. It was the reported value of a later transfer between other clubs, and the terms of any payment back to Charlton are not established.
Does Lookman’s 2026 move to Atlético mean another payment?
Atlético Madrid announced in February 2026 that it had reached an agreement with Atalanta for Lookman and that he signed a contract through 30 June 2030 (Atlético Madrid). BBC Sport reported the proposed deal at €35 million (£30.3 million) (BBC Sport).

Neither figure establishes a payment to Charlton. The available reporting does not show that any sell-on entitlement from the Everton deal remained applicable to this later transfer.
