A casino bonus is a promotion, not automatically withdrawable cash. Before accepting one, check how much you must wager, which play counts, what restrictions apply, and what happens if you leave. The rules cited here are specific to Great Britain; gambling laws and offer terms differ by jurisdiction.
What a casino bonus is—and what it is not
Online betting sites and apps may offer incentives such as bonus money or free spins. These promotions can come with restrictions, so the headline amount alone does not tell you what you can withdraw or when. The UK Gambling Commission explains the types of offers and their restrictions in its guide to free offers and bonuses.
Check whether the promotion gives you bonus funds, free spins, or another benefit, and how its terms treat any resulting winnings. You should be able to tell when you are using your own money and when you are using restricted bonus funds. The Commission says restrictions, including bet-size limits, should be made clear to customers; see its online gambling guidance.
What a wagering requirement means
A wagering requirement is the total value of wagers a customer must make before funds become withdrawable. A multiplier gives a rough calculation: multiply the amount the requirement applies to by the stated multiplier. The offer’s terms determine which wagers count and whether the multiplier applies to the bonus, deposit, or another amount, so do not assume the calculation base.
#1 Best Overall
The UK Gambling Commission’s example is a £10 bonus with a 50-times requirement: the customer must play through £500 before winnings can be withdrawn. That is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a recommendation or a live offer. The Commission explains the example in Gambling promotions to be safer and simpler.
How to compare two offers
Put the current official terms side by side rather than comparing only headline values. Fill in each item from the operator’s terms; if a detail is not stated clearly, treat that as a reason to seek clarification rather than guess.
| Term to check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Incentive | Is it bonus money, free spins, or another promotion, and what exactly is awarded? |
| Wagering requirement | What is the multiplier, and what amount does it apply to—the bonus, deposit, or another defined sum? |
| Eligible play | Which games or product categories count, and are any excluded or counted differently? |
| Bet restrictions | Is there a maximum bet or another play restriction while bonus funds are active? |
| Time limit | Does the offer have an expiry or deadline, and when does it start? |
| Withdrawal terms | Are winnings capped or otherwise restricted, and when can funds be withdrawn? |
| Declining or leaving | Can you refuse or exit the promotion, and what happens to your remaining deposit and deposit-funded winnings? |
| Fund clarity | Can you readily distinguish your own deposit from restricted bonus funds? |
Do not infer missing details from the headline or from another promotion by the same operator. UK rules require incentive terms to be clear, transparent, fair, and readily accessible. The relevant Gambling Commission provisions are in its marketing code and LCCP Condition 5.1.1.
What UK rules say about bonus restrictions and leaving
Under the cited UK Gambling Commission marketing code, wagering requirements on bonus funds are capped at 10 times. The code also prohibits incentives that combine different gambling product types under the cited provision. These are UK-specific requirements; do not assume they apply in another jurisdiction, and check the current rules and the operator’s terms before relying on them.

UK consumer guidance says customers should be able to exit a promotion and keep their remaining deposit funds, along with eligible winnings earned through play with that deposit. It also says customers should be able to distinguish their own funds from bonus funds. The UK Government’s guidance for online gambling firms sets out these expectations.

The Gambling Commission has said evidence shows high wagering requirements can lead to higher-intensity gambling and add complexity, increasing the risk of excessive gambling and harm. That is the regulator’s summary of evidence; it does not predict what will happen to any particular player. Its discussion appears in We Asked, You Said, We Did.
Rank #4
A larger multiplier means more wagering is required when the same amount is used as the calculation base. Consider whether the restrictions and amount of play required are acceptable to you before opting in; do not treat a bonus as a way to make gambling profitable or as cash you can freely withdraw.
