What changed with Carnival Vacation Protection?
The precise recent rule change has not been established by Carnival’s official material available for this article. Carnival’s passenger-rights page recommends trip cancellation insurance and points readers to Vacation Protection, but does not explain a change to the plan. Carnival’s Cruise Passenger Bill of Rights therefore cannot confirm what rule changed or when.
Carnival’s Vacation Protection product page describes a cancellation fee waiver and a separate insurance component underwritten by Nationwide. The cancellation fee waiver and insurance are distinct parts of the product. A cash waiver or future cruise credit is not the same thing as an insurance benefit, so check the plan wording for covered reasons, exclusions, deadlines, and the process for making a claim.

The welcome feature is that eligible spending can earn both redeemable Points and status-tracking Stars at the same rate. Carnival says members earn 3 Carnival Rewards Points and 3 Status Qualifying Stars for each eligible US dollar spent. Points can be redeemed for eligible Carnival purchases; Stars determine a member’s status. The rate is subject to Carnival’s category rules and exclusions.
Eligible spending and exclusions
Carnival lists cruise fare, gratuities, transfers, Carnival Vacation Protection, and eligible pre-cruise and onboard purchases among the categories that can earn Points and Stars. Its exclusions include Required Cruise Fees and Expenses, Government Taxes and Fees, Carnival Fly2Fun air travel, certain fare types, and purchases paid using Rewards Points, onboard credits, or certain Future Cruise Credits. Carnival says eligible Points and Stars from cruise fare, onboard spending, pre-cruise purchases, and casino play generally post about 14 days after sailing completion. Some eligible pre-cruise purchases made during the 2026 transition may post later. Carnival also describes additional earning mechanics for casino play and its co-branded Mastercard; consult its current terms for those details.
Enrollment and status transition
Carnival moved the planned Rewards launch from June 1, 2026, to September 1, 2026. Its current help page says the transition took effect on September 1, 2026: the VIFP number became the Carnival Guest Number, and eligible guests must enroll and accept the terms to participate. Carnival’s earlier December 2025 announcement described a different transition offer for former Platinum members; the current help-page terms below are the ones to use for present guidance.
