What does Tan’s Cardiff City connection add to the comparison?
BBC Sport reported that Cardiff City owed Tan £68 million in loans at the end of the club’s last published accounting period referenced in its report, which ended in May 2024. That is a liability owed by the club to its owner; it is not Tan’s net worth or an estimate of Cardiff City’s value.

A club’s enterprise value measures the business, including its equity and net debt. An owner’s net worth is a different calculation: it concerns that person’s assets and liabilities, which may include only a share of a club and other business interests. Shared ownership further complicates comparisons, as with Manchester United’s Glazer family and Jim Ratcliffe. A controlling shareholder’s wealth should not be confused with the full resources of an ownership vehicle or fund.
