The planned fleet combines four new A330s with five used A330-200s to be converted into CC-330 Husky aircraft. The broader project also includes equipment, training capability, integrated logistics and sustainment, so the contract figure is not a simple per-aircraft purchase price.
The Husky is intended to replace the Royal Canadian Air Force’s CC-150 Polaris and perform several roles: refuelling aircraft in flight, carrying passengers, aeromedical evacuation and strategic transport. Here is what the published costs, fleet plan, schedule and basing details actually say.
What does Canada’s $3.6 billion Husky deal cover?
The Strategic Tanker Transport Capability project is the procurement program; CC-330 Husky is the RCAF designation for its A330-based fleet. In July 2023, the Government of Canada announced an approximately $3.6 billion contract, excluding taxes, for the acquisition and conversion of nine aircraft. That figure should not be read as the price of nine completed tankers, nor as the total cost of every element of the wider project. The 2023 contract announcement and the current project page describe different pieces of the program scope.
The current project page says the larger project encompasses associated equipment, training capability, integrated logistics and sustainment. It also lists separate support contracts, with values stated including taxes:

The Defence Investment Agency’s March 2026 support announcement provides recent context for the long-term in-service awards. These tax-inclusive support-contract values have different scopes and contract structures from the $3.6 billion acquisition-and-conversion figure, which excludes taxes. Adding them together and calling the result the fleet’s purchase price would obscure those differences.
How many aircraft is Canada getting, and what is the fleet mix?
The planned fleet has nine aircraft, but it is not a uniform batch of new-build tankers:

- Five used A330-200s. These are to be converted for the Husky fleet.
The distinction matters: the program involves both aircraft acquisition and conversion work. The published plan describes a fleet being assembled and equipped over time, not nine identical finished aircraft already in RCAF service. The government’s 2023 award announcement gives the acquisition mix, while the project page describes the wider capability.
What can the CC-330 Husky do?
The aircraft are intended to replace the CC-150 Polaris with a multi-role capability. Canada identifies four mission areas:

- Passenger transport: moving more than 250 passengers, according to the project page.
- Aeromedical evacuation: transporting patients as part of an evacuation mission.
- Strategic transport: moving people or cargo over long distances.
The government lists a range of 13,900 km with a 10-tonne payload, a service ceiling of 13,000 metres and an estimated life expectancy of 30 years. These are published project specifications; the page does not say that every mission would use the full passenger capacity and stated range at the same time. The official mission description is also summarized in the 2026 support announcement.
When will the Husky fleet be operational?
The current STTC project page lists full multi-role tanker transport (MRTT) capability deliveries beginning in 2027. That is a published delivery milestone, not confirmation that all nine aircraft have been delivered or that the fleet has achieved full operational capability.

In March 2024, the government described Initial Operational Capability (IOC) as planned for 2028–2029 and Full Operational Capability (FOC) for 2032–2033. Those were plans announced at that time, not evidence that either milestone has since occurred. The March 2026 support-contract announcement does not independently update IOC or FOC dates. The available official material therefore establishes the currently listed delivery start and the earlier planned operational milestones, but not completion of those milestones or a revised current IOC/FOC date. Canadian Forces Base Trenton is designated as the East Main Operating Base. The project page described two other locations as still under negotiation: Edmonton International Airport for the West Main Operating Base, and Mike Zubko Airport in Inuvik as a forward operating location. Those proposed locations should not be presented as confirmed bases.

The project page also flags schedule risks: the volume of work could delay near-term milestones, and infrastructure work could lag equipment delivery. That distinction is important for a fleet whose aircraft deliveries and operating locations depend on both aircraft preparation and supporting facilities. What the published figures do—and do not—tell you
The $3.6 billion headline is a large contract figure, but its scope is specific: it is the approximate, tax-exclusive value announced in 2023 for acquiring and converting nine aircraft. It is distinct from the tax-inclusive support contracts listed on the current project page and from the broader project scope, which includes equipment, training, logistics and sustainment. The published numbers do not support treating the combined program as a single, directly comparable per-aircraft purchase price.
