Why Canada suspended imports from the Tar Heel plant
Smithfield Foods said the suspension followed “an issue with a limited number of certain offal shipments.” Reuters also reported an offal issue and said the suspension was unrelated to tariffs. The explanation is attributed to the company and Reuters: the sources available do not include a detailed, independent account from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) describing the underlying shipments.
When exports resumed
Reuters reported that the suspension lasted from March 6 to March 12, 2025, and that pork items produced at the plant after March 12 were eligible to be exported to Canada again. Smithfield’s March 14 announcement stated: “Canadian exports from Smithfield’s Tar Heel, NC facility have resumed.”
Eligibility after March 12 does not establish that any particular shipment crossed the border or was admitted. A facility’s approval and an individual shipment’s admissibility are separate checks.

How to check the plant or a shipment
Check establishment eligibility
CFIA maintains a searchable foreign meat-establishment listing for checking whether a foreign facility is eligible. The listing page was updated September 10, 2026, but the available information here does not establish Tar Heel’s specific current status. Consult the facility’s record directly rather than treating the March 2025 announcement as proof of its October 2026 listing.
Check a particular shipment
For a shipment, CFIA’s Shipment Tracker accepts a CBSA transaction number or an Official Meat Inspection Certificate number. It covers electronic import declarations and meat inspection status; it is not a lookup for a plant’s export eligibility.
