A blog usually means a regularly updated website, publication, or publishing context. An article is one individual piece of content. They are not competing formats: a blog can publish articles, and a blog post can itself be an article.
What’s the difference between a blog and an article?
The distinction is mainly about what each word identifies. “Blog” often describes the place or ongoing publication where content appears. Cambridge defines a blog as “a regular record of your thoughts, opinions, or experiences that you put on the internet for other people to read” (Cambridge Dictionary); Oxford likewise defines it as a website where a person or organization writes regularly (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary).
“Article,” by contrast, refers to a discrete piece of content. In web publishing, the HTML <article> element represents a self-contained composition intended to be independently distributable or reusable; MDN lists a blog entry as one example (MDN Web Docs).
| Question | Blog | Article |
|---|---|---|
| What does the word usually identify? | A regularly updated website, publication, or publishing context | One discrete piece of content |
| Can the two overlap? | Yes. A blog can publish articles. | Yes. An article can appear on a blog. |
| Does length settle the distinction? | No universal cutoff is established. | No universal cutoff is established. |
| What should guide the label? | The publisher’s conventions and readers’ expectations | The piece’s purpose, structure, and the publication’s conventions |
Is a blog post an article?
It can be. “Blog post” tells readers where or how the item is published; “article” describes the item as a piece of content. A personal-finance blog, for example, might publish an article explaining how a budget works. Calling it a blog post or an article can both be accurate, depending on the context.

Are blogs shorter or less formal than articles?
Not as a general rule. The sources defining these terms distinguish a publishing context from an individual composition; they do not establish a universal word-count cutoff or say that every blog post must be brief, casual, or lightly researched. Nor does “article” guarantee a particular length, tone, or level of research. A specific publication may set its own style rules, but those are that publisher’s conventions rather than a universal definition.

- Follow the publication’s terminology. If its style guide consistently calls its entries “posts,” use that label; if it calls them “articles,” follow suit.
- Describe the content’s purpose clearly. A useful title and description tell readers what the piece helps them understand or do, regardless of whether the site calls it a post or an article.
- For web structure, represent the content’s role. Google says Article structured data can help it understand news, blog, and sports article pages. This is implementation guidance, not a definition of “blog” or “article,” and Article markup is not required for eligibility for features such as Top stories (Google Search Central).
Google’s guidance on helpful content also emphasizes whether the main content directly serves the page’s purpose; that supports focusing on reader value, but does not create a boundary between blogs and articles (Google Search Central).
