A China Construction Bank (CCB) quote is only meaningful when you know which listing it represents, its currency, and when the price was recorded. CCB’s Hong Kong H-shares trade as 939 (also shown as 00939), while its Shanghai A-shares trade as 601939. Hong Kong’s closing auction runs after continuous trading ends, so a late-day price change may be an auction update—not evidence of a separate after-hours trade or company news.

First identify which CCB share you are viewing

China Construction Bank has two relevant ordinary-share listings: H-shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) under code 939, and A-shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) under code 601939. CCB’s 2025 half-year report labels the Hong Kong code 00939; market displays may omit the leading zero. CCB investor relations and its 2025 half-year report identify the listings.

These are distinct listings, not interchangeable displays of one quote. A Hong Kong price and a Shanghai price can differ in currency and timestamp as well as nominal value. Before comparing them, note the code and venue, quote currency, time and local session, whether the figure is a continuous-session trade or an auction indication/final close, and whether both quotes were recorded at comparable times.

What “after-hours” can mean for CCB shares

For Hong Kong H-shares, the official market schedule includes a closing auction after continuous trading. On a normal full trading day, afternoon continuous trading ends at 4:00 p.m. Hong Kong time; the closing auction then ends at a randomly determined time between 4:08 and 4:10 p.m. An update in that window may therefore be part of the exchange’s regular closing process rather than a later, separate trading session. HKEX’s schedule and auction explanation are available on its securities trading mechanism page and Closing Auction Session FAQ.

The auction has reference-price fixing, order-input, no-cancellation and random-closing stages. HKEX describes the mechanism as enabling execution at securities’ closing prices. A value shown during the auction should be identified as an auction indication if that is what the data source reports; it should not automatically be called the final matched closing price. A vendor may also post or label values according to its own conventions, which need to be checked separately.

Hong Kong H-shares (939/00939)

For a normal full day, HKEX lists pre-opening from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m., morning continuous trading from 9:30 a.m. to noon, an extended morning session from noon to 1:00 p.m., afternoon continuous trading from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and the closing auction from 4:00 p.m. to a random close between 4:08 and 4:10 p.m., all Hong Kong time. Half-days and holiday arrangements can differ, so use the schedule for the specific date.

Shanghai A-shares (601939)

The SSE timetable shown in HKEX’s Stock Connect material has an opening call auction from 9:15 to 9:25 a.m., continuous trading from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 to 2:57 p.m., then a closing call auction from 2:57 to 3:00 p.m., Shanghai time. The schedule is subject to exchange rules and date-specific changes; check the applicable exchange calendar. See HKEX’s Stock Connect trading-hours page and China Connect rules.

Because Shanghai’s close and Hong Kong’s closing auction occur at different local times, a screen showing both listings may display updates from different points in their respective sessions. That timing difference, a different listing, or a data provider’s timestamp convention can explain why two displayed values do not move together. It does not, by itself, establish that a particular CCB quote was an after-hours trade.

How to check a CCB price or apparent move

  1. Confirm the instrument. Determine whether the quote is for HKEX 939/00939 or SSE 601939.
  2. Capture the quote details. Record the data source, timestamp, currency and price basis: last trade, indicative auction price or closing price. Do not infer missing details from the number alone.
  3. Check the exchange session. Establish whether that venue was in continuous trading, a closing auction or closed at the timestamp, using the schedule for that date.
  4. Compare like with like. Compare the quote with the prior close for the same listing and on the same price basis. Do not treat the nominal prices of the Hong Kong and Shanghai lines as directly comparable.
  5. Look for a documented explanation. Check CCB announcements, results and presentations before attributing a move to company news or fundamentals. CCB’s investor-relations site provides access to results, announcements, presentations and investor services.
  6. Verify vendor-specific displays. If a quote service labels a value “after-hours,” check the provider’s definition and the corresponding exchange record. Coverage and quote conventions vary; a label alone does not establish that CCB shares traded after the exchange session.

What the available company figures can—and cannot—tell you

CCB describes its activities as including corporate finance, personal finance, treasury and asset management, alongside businesses such as fund management, financial leasing, trust, insurance, futures, pension and investment banking. The bank reported 785 million personal customers, 12.73 million corporate customers, 378,344 staff and 14,614 operating entities at the end of 2025. It also listed market capitalization of approximately US$265,545 million at that date. These are dated company figures, not a current share price or an explanation for a daily price change. Consult current results and relevant disclosures to assess business performance.

Is there a verified current after-hours move?

No timestamped quote, date-specific percentage change, current post-close trade or verified cause for a CCB move is established here. The exact meaning of an “after-hours” display depends on the data provider and the relevant exchange record. A current price should be reported only with its listing code, venue, currency, timestamp and session or price basis.
