Use exchange and regulator disclosures to check the issuer’s figures; a low non-performing-loan ratio, a high dividend yield or a sector average is not enough on its own to establish that a stock is attractive.
Identify the exact security first
“A Chinese bank stock” is not a single investment. Before comparing figures or prices, record the bank’s legal name, ticker, listing venue, share class, trading currency and the reporting period you plan to analyze. Also establish your own jurisdiction and whether your brokerage account can access that security.
A bank may have more than one listed share class. Do not assume that an A-share and an H-share have the same price, currency exposure, market access or valuation context. Comparisons between share classes or banks are meaningful only when you know which security each price and ratio describes.
Build a current, issuer-specific document set
Use the bank’s latest annual report, latest interim report and subsequent quarterly or material announcements. Check each document’s publication date and the period it covers; then compare like periods and consistent definitions. The relevant exchange and regulator disclosures can help you confirm that you are using the issuer’s filed information.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) sets out bank-specific disclosure items in its Compilation Rules No. 26 for commercial banks. These include multi-year data on assets, liabilities, deposits, loans, interbank borrowings, capital, risk-weighted assets and loan-loss reserves, as well as indicators such as capital adequacy, non-performing loans, provisioning coverage, liquidity, cost-income ratio and loan concentrations.
Bank of China’s investor-relations archive is one example of an issuer site that catalogs annual, interim and quarterly reports by date. It is a filing-location example, not a recommendation of that bank.
Test the loan book, not just the headline NPL ratio
Non-performing loans (NPLs) are loans classified as non-performing under the bank’s reporting definitions. Read both the NPL balance and the NPL ratio, and follow them over several quarters or years. A ratio alone can conceal changes in loan growth, classifications or the composition of the book.
Look for deterioration before a loan is classified as non-performing
Review loan migration, overdue and restructured loans, and the bank’s explanation of credit-risk exposure and asset classification. These disclosures can help show whether risk is changing before it appears in the reported NPL figure. Compare classification policies and definitions across banks before treating a difference as a performance gap.

Find where the credit risk is concentrated
Examine lending by industry, geography and major borrower, along with disclosed collateral, recoveries and other relevant credit-risk information. Concentration matters: a bank can report a modest NPL ratio while remaining exposed to a small number of sectors or borrowers.
Put provisions in context
Compare loan-loss reserves and provisioning coverage with NPLs and total loans. Interpret coverage alongside loan mix, write-offs, restructuring and classification practices; a coverage ratio is not a stand-alone forecast of future losses. CSRC disclosure rules call for information on NPL analysis, restructuring, credit exposure and the geographic and industrial distribution of loans.
Assess capital and liquidity as separate safeguards
Capital
Check capital adequacy and capital composition over time, together with risk-weighted assets, capital issuance and distributions. Consider the bank’s stated objectives and the applicable requirements rather than treating one capital ratio as a complete measure of loss-absorbing capacity.
Liquidity and funding structure
Review the reported liquidity indicators, the maturity structure of assets and liabilities, and management’s explanation of liquidity risks, asset-liability matching and funding strategy. Capital concerns a bank’s capacity to absorb losses; liquidity concerns its ability to meet obligations as they fall due. Neither measure substitutes for the other.

Understand how the bank earns—and spends—money
Trace the earnings engine through interest income and expense, net interest margin, loan yields, deposit costs, fee income, operating expenses and credit-loss charges. Check the trend across periods and whether earnings depend on a narrow set of businesses.
CSRC bank disclosures call for average balances and rates for loan and deposit categories, as well as cost-income ratios and information on businesses such as wealth management, agency and custody. Use those details to ask whether lending returns are keeping pace with funding costs and whether non-interest income is recurring.
Interest-rate changes can affect asset yields and funding costs differently. Read the bank’s rate-sensitivity and market-risk discussion, including disclosed sensitivity to interest rates, exchange rates, stock prices and other prices, rather than assuming that a rate change helps or hurts every bank in the same way.
Use valuation and dividends as checks, not verdicts
Price-to-earnings (P/E) relates a share price to earnings; price-to-book (P/B) relates it to book value; dividend yield relates dividends to the share price. The CSRC Investor Protection Bureau describes these as useful indicators for long-term and value investors, while also advising investors to consider fundamentals, market conditions and prospects.

Compare each measure with genuinely comparable banks and with the issuer’s own history. Check the earnings and book value behind the ratios: weak or changing profitability, credit losses or asset quality can make a seemingly low multiple misleading. Align the reporting periods and definitions before drawing a peer comparison.
A high dividend yield can result from a falling share price and does not establish that a payout is sustainable. Compare dividends with earnings, capital needs, regulatory constraints, payout history and the bank’s stated policy. Dividends are only one part of shareholder return.

Regulator-reported aggregates describe the banking sector, not an individual issuer. NFRA’s “Banking sector statistics as of the end of 2026 Q2” reports the following commercial-bank measures for that period:
| Sector measure | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Non-performing-loan ratio | 1.52% — commercial-bank sector aggregate reported by NFRA for 2026 Q2. |
| Capital adequacy ratio | 15.26% — commercial-bank sector aggregate reported by NFRA for 2026 Q2. |
| Liquidity coverage ratio | 148.53% — commercial-bank sector aggregate reported by NFRA for 2026 Q2. |
| Net stable funding ratio | 128.13% — commercial-bank sector aggregate reported by NFRA for 2026 Q2. |
These aggregates provide context for the period, not a benchmark that every bank meets or an investment conclusion about any one stock. For an issuer-level assessment, use that bank’s own filings and disclosures.

Compare candidate banks on consistent axes
If you are comparing two or more banks, use aligned reporting periods and definitions, then work through the same questions for each:
- Credit quality: NPL balances and ratios, loan migration, restructuring and concentrations.
- Loss absorption: provisions, coverage, write-offs and capital composition.
- Resilience: capital adequacy, liquidity measures and funding structure.
- Funding economics: deposit mix and cost, lending yields and interest-rate sensitivity.
- Business performance: earnings mix, profitability, credit costs and operating efficiency.
- Shareholder returns: valuation, dividend history and payout sustainability.
- Security fit: share class, currency, listing venue and access for your jurisdiction.
Write down what is comparable and what is not. If a ratio uses a different definition, period or share price, resolve that difference before ranking the banks.
Turn the findings into an investment decision
Keep the research process distinct from the decision to buy. A useful final check is whether you can explain, using issuer disclosures, what drives the bank’s earnings, where its main credit risks sit, how capital and liquidity would respond to stress, and why the current valuation might—or might not—compensate for those risks. If a key answer depends on a definition or disclosure you cannot verify, treat that uncertainty as part of the analysis rather than filling it with a sector average.
This is a general research method, not a recommendation to buy or sell a particular security. The right evidence and practical access also depend on the bank, share class and investor jurisdiction.
