If you have the receipt, Walmart’s stated refund method is another Walmart Gift Card—not cash or a refund to a different payment method. The item’s return deadline and eligibility still depend on its category and, for Marketplace purchases, the seller.
How Walmart refunds a purchase paid for with a gift card
Walmart’s U.S. return policy lists a Walmart Gift Card as the refund method for a receipted purchase originally paid with a Walmart Gift Card. Walmart says gift-card refunds may take up to three hours to process. A Walmart Gift Card is store credit that can be used at a physical Walmart store or on Walmart.com, rather than cash. This is different from trying to return the gift card itself: Walmart’s Gift Card Terms and Conditions say gift cards are not returnable or refundable. That restriction concerns the card, not an eligible item bought with it. Walmart Gift Card Terms and Conditions.
Check the item’s deadline and eligibility first
Walmart’s U.S. policy says most items can be returned within 90 days, but that is not a universal window. Some categories have exceptions, and Marketplace items may follow different seller policies. Eligibility can also depend on the item and its condition. Check the listing, order details, or return flow for the specific item before traveling to a store. Walmart’s policy page was updated August 17, 2026, and applies to products purchased in Walmart U.S. stores, Walmart.com, and Walmart Business. Marketplace seller rules can differ. The exact result for an individual item depends on its category, seller, purchase date, and proof of purchase.
How to start the return
For a store purchase
- Bring the item and receipt to a Walmart return counter.
- Ask to return it under the policy for that item. If the eligible purchase was paid for with a Walmart Gift Card and you have the receipt, Walmart’s listed refund method is a Walmart Gift Card.
Walmart asks for a store receipt or, for an online purchase, the Walmart.com or Walmart Business order number as part of the standard return process. Walmart Return Policy.

For an online purchase
- Open Purchase History.
- Select the item and choose Start a return.
- Review the available return methods for that order. Depending on the item, options may include returning it in a store, mailing it, arranging pickup, or dropping it off at FedEx.

If you do not have the receipt
For an in-store return without a receipt, bring valid government-issued photo ID. Walmart uses a refund verification process, so acceptance is not guaranteed. If Walmart approves the return, the refund is issued as a Walmart Gift Card. Walmart Refunds; Walmart Return Policy.

What if you used a gift card and another payment method?
For a purchase split across multiple payment methods, Walmart reserves the right, where permitted by law, to send the refund to only one of those methods. Its general policy does not promise how every split payment will be allocated, so check the refund details Walmart provides for your return rather than assuming the money will be divided back in the same proportions. - Confirm the item is eligible and check the return deadline for its category.
- For a Marketplace order, check the seller and the order’s return details.
