Re:

Can Americans Buy Nintendo Stock? U.S. Investor Guide

U.S. investors may access Nintendo through the NTDOY ADR or, with a broker that supports foreign-market orders, Tokyo-listed ordinary shares under code 7974.

Yes. Americans can generally buy Nintendo exposure through NTDOY, an over-the-counter American Depositary Receipt (ADR), if their broker supports it. Some brokers may also accept orders for Nintendo’s ordinary shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under stock code 7974. Access to either route depends on the broker and account.

Two ways U.S. investors may access Nintendo shares

Route Instrument and venue Key details
NTDOY Unsponsored ADR traded over the counter in the United States Citi’s program information lists four depositary receipts for one Nintendo ordinary share. Confirm that the ADR is currently available through your broker.
7974 Nintendo ordinary shares listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market A U.S. broker may be able to route an order to Tokyo, but foreign-market trading is not available at every broker.

Nintendo identifies its stock code as 7974 and its listing as the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. Its ordinary shares trade in Tokyo; NTDOY is a depositary receipt linked to deposited foreign shares, not the same instrument as holding ordinary shares directly. Nintendo investor information and Citi’s depositary receipt program information describe the respective listing and ADR program.

How the ADR differs from buying ordinary shares in Tokyo

Citi identifies NTDOY as an unsponsored ADR. The SEC explains that an unsponsored ADR is established without the cooperation of the non-U.S. company and may be initiated by a broker-dealer seeking to create a U.S. trading market. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: American Depositary Receipts also notes that depositary banks may charge fees associated with services such as dividends, currency exchange, or voting. Actual charges and services depend on the program and broker; do not assume that ADR ownership works exactly like direct ownership of Tokyo-listed shares.

For Tokyo orders, the trade is in Nintendo’s ordinary shares on a foreign market. Broker rules determine whether a U.S. customer can place such an order, which account types qualify, how currency conversion is handled, and what order sizes are accepted. The SEC says a U.S. broker may be able to process an order for a company that trades only on a foreign market, but availability is not universal. See the SEC’s guidance on trading foreign securities.

What Nintendo’s 100-share trading unit means

Nintendo reports a trading unit of 100 ordinary shares as of March 31, 2026. That is the standard unit for ordinary-share trading in Tokyo; it does not establish the minimum order size a U.S. broker will accept or the minimum for NTDOY. Ask the broker directly about order-size rules for the specific instrument and account.

What to check with your broker before placing an order

  1. Ask whether the broker currently accepts purchases of NTDOY, orders for Tokyo-listed 7974, or both.
  2. Confirm the eligible account types, trading permissions, accepted order sizes, execution venue, and applicable trading hours.
  3. Request a complete fee explanation, including commissions, currency conversion, custody charges, ADR pass-through fees, and any other applicable costs.
  4. Ask how the chosen route handles dividends, voting instructions, and corporate actions.

Availability, fees, ADR program details, and trading rules can change. Verify current terms with the broker before investing. This information explains access and mechanics; it does not assess whether Nintendo stock is suitable for you.
